Mini Chapter 2
Heatherleap let out an earsplitting screech. Her paws flailed as she tried to grab onto stopping to stop herself from falling.
"Help!" she yowled, her head filling with panic. After what seemed like ages, she finally landed with a thump on soft reeds. She frantically blinked her eyes as the world spun around her. She is in a reedbed near a small, trickling river, where she could see the shiny scales of fish glimmering in the sunlight.
"Is this another dream?" demanded Heatherleap, drawing her teeth back in a snarl. She suddenly felt a chill along her spine, and an eerie feeling made her fur bristle. "Show yourself!"
A mist in the form of a cat rose from the river, and suddenly it filled with sticky blood that let off a tang. The sky became dark, and clouds covered it. The chirping of the birds nearby immediately disappeared, and Heatherleap thought she could hear yowling and the smell of heated battle nearby.
"You will fall many times before you get to the top." The mist's voice was even and cold - it made Heatherleap's paws tingle with fear. "And blood will be spilled more times than you can count. Beware, for the cat you are looking for will have another identity."
"Who are you?" screeched Heatherleap, swiping defiantly at the mist's form. The mist only let out an emotionless chuckle, and suddenly everything was back to normal.
Heatherleap's legs buckled, and she lay there, panting. She felt like something was pulling at her from the side, and her eyes opened when she felt a sharp prod to her flank.
"Wake up, Heatherleap!" Gorsepaw's voice shook her from her dream, and his hazy snout slowly took form. "I think Snowytail's sick. She's in the warrior's den," breathed Gorsepaw urgently. "She has a bellyache, and she's vomiting." Worry clouded his gaze for his mentor, and
Heatherleap scrabbled to her paws. "Okay. Get some wet moss, as quickly as you can." Worry wormed under her fur as she watched the apprentice dash away.
Early dawn light warmed her pelt as she carefully picked out a dock leaf, and yarrow from her stores in the ground. She wrapped up the leaf bundle, and bounded to the warriors' den. Blackspring and Sunclaw were sharing tongues underneath the vines of her den, but their ears pricked when they saw Heatherleap rushing across the clearing.
A sour smell rose from the den as feeble retching came from inside. "Snowytail?" Heatherleap pushed through the vines to see the once-healthy warrior looking as though something was eating her from the inside. Her eyes were empty and glazed, and her pelt was matted and tangled. "Snowytail! Why didn't you call any of the apprentices for help? Or call for me?" mewed Heatherleap tenderly as she put her forepaw on the she-cat's trembling flank. "No, it's not a fever," she rasped. "There was something in my pile of traveling herbs that wasn't in any other cat's." Horror struck Heatherleap. Had she put something wrong in Snowytail's pile?
