4| No Two Blondes
"You're blocking my sun."
I looked over my shoulder. "I didn't see your name on it."
"Funny," Harper drawled. "Seriously, Nate, get out of the way or I will move you."
I snickered and, ignoring Harper, turned back to face the ocean. I was so ready for this. Sun, fun, and ladies. That was the whole point of me tagging along on these trips. Treasure Island was where tourists came for summer vacation. And that meant that there was a different buffet of girls each time.
And I loved buffets.
When I glanced to the left, a pair of blondes caught my eye. They were walking in the surf, wearing barely-there bikinis as they laughed and talked back and forth. I rubbed my hands together and wet my lips with my tongue. Every pickup line I've ever used raced through my mind as I stared at them.
Which one should I use this time?
Just as I went to take a step towards them, I was hit on the back head with a football.
"What the hell!" I turned around with a frown. "What's your problem, Harper?"
"I warned you to move, Jenkins. It wasn't my fault you didn't listen."
"So you hit me?"
Harper shrugged. "I didn't hit you. The football did."
"Whatever," I mumbled and walked over to the blanket the girls had spread out when we first came down to the beach. "How's this?" I asked, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "Better?"
She turned her head and smiled. "Much better."
I've known Harper Lewis pretty much my whole life-and one thing everybody knew about her was the fact that she didn't take any crap. She had no filter and wasn't afraid to tell you like it was. And clearly she would even hit guys with footballs if they blocked her sun.
I sat down in one of the beach chairs we had set up and opened the large blue cooler. Reaching inside, I pulled out a Coke. I opened it and sighed when I took a few gulps. Damn this was good. Cold soda on a hot day.
"Pass me one."
I kept my eyes straight ahead. "Nope. You want one? Come and get it yourself."
"Come on," Harper begged. "Please? It's the least you can do."
This girl was out of her mind. Completely certifiable.
"The least I can do? Really? You hit me!"
"Because you were blocking my sun!"
I shook my head. "I will never understand you women."
I looked back at the two blondes. They stopped walking and were now in the water. This was my chance. I just needed to go in there, put on the charm, and then I would be in there. Totally in there. And there were two of them.
Hell yeah.
I guzzled the rest of my soda before discarding the can in an empty grocery bag. Just as I went to stand up, something hit me again. This time in the back.
I turned and looked down at the frisbee laying on the sand behind me before I arched a brow at Harper. "A frisbee? Really?"
"What did you expect? You're being an ass."
"Like I said, I'll never understand you women."
"From your lips to God's ears," she muttered.
"What was that?" I heard what she said. I just wanted her to repeat it while I thought of something to say back to her. Something that would piss her off the same way she was pissing me off.
Harper feigned innocence. "Oh, nothing. Nothing at all, Nate. Why don't you go do," she waved in the direction of the two blondes, "whoever-I mean whatever you do."
"Funny," I hissed. "Real funny. Don't think I don't know what you girls say and think about me, Harper. And you should also know that I know one of your secrets."
Leaning her head forward, she lowered her sunglasses a little and glared at me over the frame. "No you don't."
"Yes, I do."
She pushed her sunglasses back in place and leaned back against the beach chair. "You aren't a very good liar, Nate."
Even through her dark sunglasses I knew she was staring at me, wondering if I was actually bluffing or not.
"Two words: Bryant. Myers."
Harper's face turned fifty shades of red with embarrassment. She jumped up from the chair and stormed over to me. "How do you know about-"
"I saw you guys in the library," I teased, cutting her off. "Really, Harper? In the Religion section?"
"I can't believe-how did you...Uh! I can't believe you." She pointed her index finger in my face. "You better not tell anyone. I'm serious, Nate."
I pushed her hand away. "If you want me to keep your secret, then you better be nice to me." A corner of my mouth lifted. "What do you say, Harper? Truce?"
She stomped her foot in the sand. "Fine! Truce." She crossed her arms over her chest and continued to glower at me. "How did you even know where the library was? You're not the reading type."
She meant it as an insult, but it was anything but.
"You're right, Harp. I don't go there to read."
When I drew the last word out and shot her a wink, Harper shivered with blatant disgust. "Ugh! Gross. I'm rewinding this whole day. None of this ever happened."
I chuckled as she returned to lay out on her beach chair. Turning around, I cursed under my breath when I realized that the two girls were gone. No two blondes for me. Damn. Oh well. Chances were I was going to see them again. Or two redheads. Maybe two brunettes. Hell, maybe it would be a mix'n'match.
"Nate! Take this!"
I groaned when I heard my sister's voice. Maybe if I didn't turn around, she would think I didn't hear her.
"Hey, asshole! Take this before I beat you with it!"
Even though I knew she wasn't capable of hitting me with it, I turned around to help her with the canopy we used for shade.
"How can you hit me with it if you can barely hold it by yourself?" I shot back.
Wrapping my arms around the large canopy, I laid it on the blanket until my dad came down. It took at least two people to put up, so it wouldn't be possible to do by myself.
Lanie rolled her eyes and pushed past me. "I would've done it with my sheer irritation at you."
"Or I would have helped her," Karma added.
"Yeah, Nate. Karma would have helped me. That's the thing about women...we get it done."
I ran my hand over my face. I really needed to get outta here and start getting down to business. I didn't come here to shoot the shit with my little sister and her friends. No fucking thank you. I had better things to do.
"Lanie? Can you please put some of this sunscreen on my back."
For a reason I didn't know, I looked at Karma and Lanie again. My eyes widened a little when Karma pulled her white cover-up over her head and tossed it on the blanket. I've known Karma just as long as I've known Harper. Even though I had no interest in dating any of my sister's friends, I couldn't help but think...dayum. Karma was looking hot. She had filled out in all the right places after her awkward braces and pig-tails stage.
When Lanie reached for the sunscreen, I couldn't stop the words from passing my lips. "You sure you don't want me to do that, Karma? I'm pretty good with my hands."
Lanie scoffed and Harper shook her head. Karma didn't even acknowledge me. Not that she ever did. Not that I ever wanted her to. Lanie's friends were just that: Lanie's friends. Not my type of women. At all.
"Back off, Nate," Lanie warned. "No one here wants your hands on them."
I grabbed at my chest and took a step back. "Ouch, little sis. That one hurt."
When I glanced down at the blanket, I grinned. If I was stuck here with my lame sister and her friends, I might as well enjoy myself. Reaching down, I picked up Harper's sunscreen that she threw over here earlier.
"I need some of this stuff, too," I said casually. "Which one of you lovely ladies would like the pleasure of helping me out?" My eyes went to Karma first. "How about you, gorgeous?"
Karma's eyes met mine, and for a second, I thought she was actually checking me out. But then she scrunched up her nose and said, "Ew. I'd rather stick my hands in a sewer, Nathan."
"And the hits just keep on comin'."
"I'll do it."
All eyes went to Harper. She got up from her beach chair and walked over to me. She pulled her sunglasses off and tossed them into her beach bag that was sitting on the edge of the blanket before looking back up at me with a flirty smile.
"I need the lotion to put it on you, Nate."
I placed the bottle in her waiting palm.
"Close your eyes," she instructed me. "I'll put it on your face first."
It didn't take a genius to know that she was up to something. That little voice inside my head was warning me that I should abort this ruse and forget the sunscreen. But my more arrogant side wouldn't let me.
So I closed my eyes and waited to see what she had planned.
What a mistake that was.
"Ready, Nate?" Harper asked loudly.
Next thing I knew, cold sunscreen shot across my chest and face. I wiped my eyes carefully before opening them. It wasn't just Harper who did it. Lanie helped her, too. And Karma was standing off to the side, giggling with a hand covering her mouth.
I exhaled a defeated sigh. "I can't say I'm surprised by this heinous act. But that just means I get to seek out my revenge."
"Yeah, right," Lanie laughed. "What the hell can you do?"
"There's only one thing to do..." I pointed to the three of them one at a time. "I'm going to hug each and every one of you." I opened my eyes wide. "Who wants some extra sunscreen?"
Lanie was my first target, and when I lunged at her all three of the girls scattered, running straight for the water. Chasing after them, I got to Karma first. When I wrapped my arms around her waist, she squealed and struggled against me.
"Nathan! Don't get my hair wet!"
"Oh you mean like this?" Chuckling darkly, I dunked her under the water. Then Harper followed by Lanie.
Yeah, there were no two blondes for me today, but I had to admit...I actually had some fun.
