1| Happy Meals
I pushed the blinds down and peered out of Lanie's bedroom window.
"Which Happy Meal is it this time?" Lanie asked. "Wait! Lemme guess. It's Slutty Suzie."
Harper snickered from the other side of the room. "My money's on Trampy Trish."
"Neither," I said as I watched Nathan make out with the blonde in his jeep. "It's Deep Throat Debbie."
My two best friends let out a disgusted groan as I turned and sat back on the bed.
Lanie held up her hand. "Okay, can we please come up with a new name for her?"
"You're the one who thought of it," I quipped.
"Yeah, but that was before she became my brother's newest Happy Meal. It's too gross now. We need a new one."
I laughed as I listened to Harper and Lanie go back and forth with new ideas for a name for Debbie. I've known my two best friends since elementary school. We did absolutely everything together. Even teased Nathan about his unlimited women-or Happy Meals, as we called them.
No matter who he was 'dating', Nathan always took his women to get some kind of fast food, then ended up hooking up with them. So, the nickname Happy Meals was born.
Aside from him being a womanizer, he was a great brother to Lanie and a good guy at heart. He was just...young. We all were. I would be turning eighteen in one week, Nathan was already eighteen, and Lanie and Harper were sixteen.
We were currently on summer break, but starting in the fall, Nathan and I will be seniors and Harper and Lanie will be juniors. Even though it would suck to start college without my two best friends, I was happy that high school was almost over.
Harper clapped her hands together. "Forget about Deep Throat Debbie. Is everyone packed for this beach trip?"
Every summer Lanie's family always went to Florida to spend a couple weeks at the beach. Harper and I usually tagged along with them.
"I am," I replied. "I went a few days ago and got some new bathing suits. And a few cute new outfits."
"I'm going to finish packing tonight," Lanie answered before walking to her closet and pulling out a very short red dress. "Look what I got!"
Harper and I got up to get a closer look. As I eyed the dress, I was super jealous and super surprised by what she was showing us. Lanie wasn't the short dress type. Harper was.
"Where did you get it?" I asked curiously.
"The mall."
Harper raised a brow and felt the material. "Feels expensive. When are you planning on wearing this? And where?"
Lanie had a huge smile and hung the dress back up. "I want to wear it when the three of us go to Florida."
I crossed my arms and raised a brow. "That's not really beach attire, Lanie."
Lanie rolled her eyes. "No kidding. I want to wear it to a club."
"A club?" Harper and I spoke at the same time.
Harper sounded as skeptical as I was. "Lanie, there is no way your parents are going to let us go to a nightclub."
"Besides," I added, "how would we get in? And we can't even drink. None of us are twenty-one."
Lanie had her 'I'm up to something' look on her face as she quickly shut her bedroom door and walked over to her bed.
Harper and I exchanged questioning glances while Laney pulled an envelope out from under her bed. She held it out for one of us to take, and Harper beat me to it.
I waited impatiently as Harper opened the small envelope and looked inside.
"Oh, my..." she looked up at Lanie. "Seriously?"
"What is it?" Unable to stand the mystery any longer, I took the envelope from Harper and looked for myself. Inside was three fake IDs. One for each of us.
"Where did you get these?" Harper asked.
Lanie lowered her voice. We never knew if one of her parents, or her brother, were lurking outside. It wouldn't be the first time.
"I used the same guy Nate used for his."
I handed Harper hers and I looked at mine more closely. I've heard the rumors about there being a student at our school who was genius about making these.
"You got Sean Sweeny to make these? How much?" I asked incredulously. Sean wasn't cheap.
"Three hundred total."
Harper's mouth dropped. "Wow. He makes a killing. No wonder he dresses how he does and drives a nice car."
I slipped my new fake ID back in the envelope and handed it to Harper. "Lanie, this is cool and everything, but how are we going to dodge your parents?"
Lanie readjusted her ponytail and went to open her door. "Don't worry about that. I'm going to take care of all of it. You guys just need to make sure that you get something cute to wear. And make sure to pack makeup and hair stuff. We need to look good."
Lanie opened her door...and there was Nathan.
"Ladies," he drawled as he came in and stood in the middle of the room. "How is everyone?"
Lanie sucked her teeth. "What do you want, Nate? We're getting ready for Florida."
He flashed a cocky smile. "Really? Makeup and cute outfits? For the beach?"
I tucked my hair behind my ear nervously. I hoped Lanie could handle him. He was always up to something, too. Must be a Jenkins family trait.
"You're such an ease dropper," she sneered. "Why don't you mind your own business?"
Nathan's grin was as shit-eating as ever. "Because, little sis, it's so much more fun to blackmail you."
Lanie huffed at her brother. "What's her name?"
Nathan always liked to take times like this and use them to his advantage. Classic brother/sister drama. I was just thankful I was an only child.
"Eliza," Nathan answered. "I want to take her to dinner tonight and I need you to cover for me."
I fake sneezed the words Happy Meal into my hand. "Sorry. Allergies."
Nathan shot me a look before he nudged his sister's shoulder. "Well, L. What's it going to be? Are you going to cover for me, or am I going to have to tell Mom and Dad that the three of you are planning something for when we go to the beach."
"Fine," Lanie sighed, "whatever."
Nathan claps his hands together, clearly satisfied with his victory. He glanced to Harper and me as he started to back out of the room.
"Harper, Karma, lovely to see you. As always."
Once he disappeared into the hallway, Lanie looked at Harper and I and tapped her chin. "Easy Eliza?"
"That works for me," I said and Harper chuckled.
"I heard that!" came Nathan's voice from his bedroom.
Lanie went over to her desk and grabbed her purse. "Ignore him. We have more important things to worry about right now." She looked from Harper to me. "We need to go get dresses for you guys!"
Lanie pointed to me. "You drove here right?"
"Yes..."
"Perfect! Let's go to the mall and then we can get some food. It's better than sitting around here all day watching my brother try to style his hair."
She wasn't wrong. That boy was obsessed with his hair.
Harper and Lanie looked at me expectantly. I could tell that they both were excited about this. I didn't mind going to the mall, it was their restaurant choices that had me considering not going.
"If we go," I started, "I get to pick the restaurant."
"Deal," they said at the same time.
The three of us spent a couple hours at the mall until Harper and I found a dress and shoes that was Lanie approved for the beach trip. After that, we went to get mani-pedis which was actually nice. I don't remember the last time I had gotten a pedicure.
When we were done at the mall, we went to Anthony's Pizza to have a late lunch. That's when Nathan started texting and calling Lanie like their house was on fire. We quickly finished eating and headed to Harper's house to drop her off. When we pulled up to Lanie's, she reached for the handle and looked over at me.
"Karma, I know you're worried about this whole sneaking to the club thing when we go to the beach. Trust me on this, okay? I'm telling you, this summer is going to be one we will never forget."
"Promise?" The word slipped out before I could stop it.
Lanie smiled and reached over to give me a hug. "I promise."
I watch Lanie hurry into the house. Two seconds later, I saw Nathan climbing out of his window. I shook my head as I watched him get into his Jeep and drive off. He was going to be so much worse when we go to Florida.
I shook my head and started driving to my house. Lanie's words about this being an unforgettable summer kept going through my mind. Excitement shot through me. She was right. I was going into my senior year. My last year in high school.
It was definitely going to be one I would never forget.
