Chapter 24: Someone.
Saturday night, we're all sitting on the beach, circled around the burning wood, the full moon makes the sky look clear. I'm all caught up in my own thoughts right now, I can't relate or understand any of their stories but I keep on listening and turning my head from the person who's talking to the one who's responding and to the rest of them when they laugh at what seems to be funny. They are having such a good time but I'm not. I just want to go home already.
"Let's play truth be told." Says Miles.
"What the hell is that game?" Jason asks his friend as he opens a can of soda.
Lilian convinced them not to drink alcohol earlier, we had to vote because Miles and Jason were against the idea but all the girls voted alcohol out plus Nick, so now they're drinking sodas.
"It's when I ask a question that has to be answered by either one or all of you." He explains, nodding like it's a thing.
That makes no proper sense.
"How do we know-"
"You'll see." He cuts Sofia off, "Starting with Jason, truth be told, who are you really in love with, Sofia or Amanda?" He asks the ultimate question, nobody was expecting him to ask that.
Thank you Miles, I think I'm finally fitting into the conversation.
"Dude, since the very first day that I had to hear you speak, this is the only time that you've said something impressive." Nick says to Miles, Miles raises his middle finger at Nick.
Everyone's eyes are now on Jason who's busy looking back at us cluelessly. He looks at Amanda and Sofia with a nervous stare.
Its now or never lover boy.
"I-uhm, I don't... know." He says.
We all groan and roll eyes at the same time.
He doesn't know who he's in love with. I turn to look at Amanda, she's already doing the silent tears.
"Don't be such a dick, bro, save these two ladies from this messed up triangle and just don't lead them on anymore." Says Miles in a pleading tone.
That was the wisest thing I've ever heard Miles say, I had no idea that Miles Turner could be wise.
"What he said." Nick points at Miles approvingly, I shake my head at him and he sends me a smile.
"Okay fine, I'll tell you." He heaves a sigh as he looks at the two girls that he claims to be in love with, "I love Sofia because she makes me feel alive, wild and crazy, I've known her all my life, we literally started dated in seventh grade and we were each other's firsts during freshman year." He says, looking at Sofia. She smiles?
"I love Amanda because she makes me feel like a better person, she brings out the very best in me and I'm always my true self around her, she knows exactly what to say in order to cheer me up and she's a good listener. That's what I really feel for both of them." He tells us then looks down at the fire in shame.
Yeah, shame on you, Jason.
But it really sounded like he was telling the truth but how can he be in love with both of them? that's insane.
"My mom said one heart is not capable of loving two hearts." I say to Jason, he looks at me and just shrugs.
He shrugs!
"Such an asshole, Jason, you know that?" Amanda angrily gets up and walks back to the house.
"I'm not sad or mad at you Jase, I always knew he was into both of us but I just couldn't find the guts to let go of him, he was there for me lots of times and I see him everyday, and not only is he my boyfriend, he is also my friend and my best friend's brother so put yourselves in my shoes, people." Sofia's voice cracks, Lilian gives her a side hug.
Oh my goodness is she going to cry too? what is there to cry about? Why is it that girls cry all the time over stupid boy problems, I don't see Jason crying or showing any remorse so why are they getting all emotional.
"I'm sorry I asked, geez." Miles surrenders, "Truth be told, everyone's most fucked up family moment." He changes the subject.
"Pass." I stand, dusting my butt and starting to walk on the beach.
In other words, running away.
"Where are you going?" Miles shouts after me.
"Going for a stroll." I respond, I didn't get the chance to have a moment to myself today.
Those are really important to me.
"I'll come with you." Nick announces and I hear him following behind me.
I guess I won't be having it after all.
The sand still feels warm underneath my bare feet.
The warm color of the moon makes the water glow as swirling waves crash against the shore, I would love to sleep and wake up to a sight like this every day.
"Let's do it, just you and me, tell me your most fucked up family moment and I'll tell you mine." He taps his finger on the straw holder of the canned drink.
I don't know if telling Nick about my issue is a good idea but him telling me about his family stuff is a game changer.
"Why do I have to go first?" I ask.
"Because I asked first." He exclaims dramatically.
"Okay okay." I start fumbling with the hem of my sweatshirt, "You've probably noticed how my dad is not around, long story short, he left us for his other family that we had no idea he had. That's it." I keep it short and simple while I avoid looking at him, I don't want him to feel bad for me.
It's not a sad story, people go through more sad things than being abandoned by someone.
"Well, if it makes you feel any better, I also have a fucked up daddy story." this makes me look at him with a smile.
Daddy sounded so funny coming from him.
"Oh yeah?" I laugh the words.
"Yeah." He sips on his soda, "My dad used to physically assault my mom when I was fifteen, I didn't do shit about it because I was young, a fucking coward and I feared him more than anything in the world." He explains.
He pauses for a second like he's searching for the right words to use.
"Everything changed when I met the Collin boys." He adds.
"The Collin boys?" I squint my eyes at him.
"The Collin boys, they were delinquents with bad reputations but they still taught me how to fight and how to do other things, and one day those lessons came in handy, my dad came home all drunk and wasted, my brother and I were in the living room watching TV while mom cooked dinner in the kitchen, I heard her scream so I got up and decided I wasn't gonna sit around and watch anymore, I got to the kitchen, found him chocking her on the floor and during that moment I could feel my own blood boiling with anger, I kicked him off of her and she gasped for air, I was like, this son of a bitch was about to kill my mother in our home with her kids sitting in the next room and that was enough reason for me to climb on top of him and I started punching him, I released all my anger on him that night and I didn't stop until I heard my mom screaming my name, begging me to stop, I didn't want her to think I was a monster like my dad so that was the only reason why I stopped." He Chucks on his drink then looks at me with a grin stretched thin.
I don't know what to respond to that, I had no idea that Nick and his family went through something as horrible as that and something tells me there's more to that story than he led on.
"I'm so sorry that's so-"
"Shhh, Don't give me that pity bullshit." He cuts me off by pressing his index finger on my lips, I bite it playfully and he quickly retrieves it.
"Damn, Parker, that was kinda hot." He checks his finger, I roll my eyes at him.
Only he would find biting a finger 'hot.'
He sips on his drink again, his tongue darts out to lick his lower lip, damn his lips are rosy, tempting and probably a little cold from drinking his soda. I stare at them. He catches me staring at them.
His hooded blue eyes are intense as they drink me in.
There's that stare again, that stare that makes me feel like he's undressing me with his eyes.
We're both staring at each other but we're not saying anything, although I believe that we're thinking about the same thing.
Without really thinking it through, I stand on my tipy toes, placing my hand on the back of his neck and crashing my lips on his, I feel his sharp intake of breath before his lips close around mine, his hand snakes around my waist and pulls me closer to his body, I feel his hard chest against mine. He drops the soda on the sand and uses his now free-cold-somehow-shaking hand to steady my neck, his tongue darts out to lick my lower lip, I do the same thing since I don't know a thing about kissing, he groans and slips his tongue in my mouth, I feel a deep burn in the pit of my stomach as Nick pulls on my bottom lip and caresses my cheek with his thumb.
Kissing is weirdly good.
Shoot, I'm kissing Nick.
I pull away from our kiss and look at him with wide eyes.
"Allison, don't-"
Too late, I'm already running back to the house and thankfully I don't hear him running after me.
Why why why, oh why would I kiss him!
I don't talk to anyone when I find them settled in the living room, they don't acknowledge me anyways so I rush upstairs into the girls' bedroom. I walk inside, closing the door behind me, leaning against it and sliding down to the floor.
I hug my legs and rest my chin on one knee. I can still feel his hands on my body, his lips on mine and I'm shaking from the adrenaline.
"What's wrong with you?"
I look up at the familiar startling voice, it's Amanda, she's coming from the bathroom with puffy eyes and her nose is red, crying over a guy who's not having such a hard time downstairs.
"I kissed someone." I answer honestly.
"Are you trying to say someone kissed you or.." She trails with her hands and waits for me to finish her sentence.
"I mean I kissed him." I specify.
"Did he kiss you back?" She asks.
"Yes." I nod yes.
"Did you like it?"
"More than I expected."
"Then what's the problem? you kissed someone and you liked it." She walks to stand in front of me with her hands on her hips.
Wait a second, why am I talking to this person that I'm not supposed to be talking to.
"Why do you even care, it's not like you give 'a shit' about me or my life anymore." I quote the words she used, getting up from the floor and moving to sit on one of the beds.
"Look, Allie, I know you hate me and I totally understand because the things I said to you that night were out of line, I'm so sorry, Allison, you're my best friend and I miss you so much baby girl." She finally apologizes and sits with me.
I can't hate her forever and I do miss her too, playing a little hard to get could have been fun but I need her help right now.
"I forgive you but do not call me baby girl." I giggle as I lay down on the comfy bed, she smiles.
"I missed the irritating sound of that giggle." She looks down at me over her shoulder.
"And I didn't miss anything about you." I lie.
"We both know you can't sleep at night without texting me. Okay now enough pep talk, who did you kiss?" She just had to remind me.
I almost forgot about it for a second there.
I lift my hands to my face and I shake my head frequently.
"Was it Miles?" I hear her ask.
"I wish." I mumble underneath my tone before sitting up, "It was Nick, I kissed Nick."
"Finally." She's not shocked at all.
"What do you mean finally?"
"I mean it's quite obvious that you two like each other and two people who like each other are bound to kiss." she gives me the insight. Like I wanted to hear it.
Is it too early to say I wanna go home? Cause I would rather put up with my mom's cliché novellas than live through stuff like this.
The door bursts open, revealing Sofia and Lilian, they both give us suspicious looks which makes me feel so guilty.
"You two are so weird." Says Lilian.
She wouldn't say that if she knew I kissed Nick would she? Crap, I'm going crazy.
"Get out we need space." Sofia opens the door wider for us, I don't think I've seen her this mean and rude.
"Okay we're leaving, don't be such a bitch about it." Amanda holds my hand, and we start walking towards the door.
"What the hell did she just call me?" Sofia asks Lilian with her finger pointed at Amanda, we both stop in our tracks.
I have a feeling this is about Jason again.
They are going to argue, fight each other and all that unnecessary stuff but he's still not gonna pick one of them. How sad.
"I was just..I didn't mean it like that.. I-"
"Did I stutter?" She now stands close to Amanda's face.
Gosh, she's scaring me too.
"She didn't mean it like that Sofia, please just let us go and we'll get out of your way." I interject.
She's still giving Amanda the death glare.
If this is what love does to people then I don't want it.
"Okay, go ahead." She stands aside and we walk out the door, "Oh and don't forget to tell Jason about how I kicked you out of the room and about how you're gonna be spending the night on the sofa." She bangs the door in front of our faces.
This is so not how I wanted to spend my weekend.
