Ch. 46
Heartstorm was frozen on the spot. His mind raced. He should run back to camp right now. He should have warned Reedstar. He couldn't believe what was happening. ThunderClan whispered and muttered, not really knowing what was happening. Reedstar looked towards RiverClan, his brow furrowed. Heartstorm heard a collective gasp and he looked up. He bit his tongue and he stopped breathing for a second. He hadn't even realised it. The sky suddenly was mingling with grey clouds. One large thunderous grey cloud was slowly floating towards the light of the bright round moon. Darkness crept into the clearing. Heartstorm felt his heart racing. He had to do something. But his mind and body didn't seem to work. Suddenly, there was a ear shattering screech. An angry yowl. A war cry. Heartstorm spun around and saw Clawstar. Clawstar stood at the end of the large rock. He had his chest puffed out and his claws unsheathed. Suddenly, in a swift motion, ShadowClan moved. Heartstorm couldn't even process what was happening. Suddenly, he was shoved to the ground. The wind was knocked out of him. He blindly trashed out and rolled away from his attacker's grasp. Firfrost stood in front of him, lashing his tail angrily. All around him, cries and growls were echoing. Chaos had erupted. Every cat was fighting.
"Oh Heartstorm," Firfrost growled. "You should never have done what you did." Heartstorm growled, not taking in Firfrost's words. A new problem flashed in his mind. Bumblepaw. He tried to dodge Firfrost but Firfrost was concentrated on him.
"You're not going anywhere," hissed Firfrost. Heartstorm growled back and lashed out. He felt his claws sink into Firfrost's soft cheek. Blood splattered. Firfrost gave out a cry of pain then quickly leapt at Heartstorm. Heartstorm felt hot pain sear through his sides and pushed Firfrost off with great strength. He stumbled back. He winced but dodged another of Firfrost's attacks and bit into Firfrost's neck. Firfrost writhed and trashed. One of his claws caught Heartstorm on the side. Heartstorm growled and felt blood trickle down his stomach. He didn't care. He needed to get back to camp. He needed to make sure his mate and daughter were ok. He needed to find Bumblepaw. Bumblepaw needed to get out of there. Heartstorm tasted sweet and warm blood on his mouth. He dug his teeth deeper into Firfrost's neck. He felt Firfrost weaken. Firfrost slumped to the ground, breathing hard. Heartstorm hissed and slapped him hard on the head. Then he slipped away. Cats were fighting. ShadowClan against ThunderClan and RiverClan. Heartstorm weaved through the hissing cats. He couldn't feel any pain. Suddenly, he spotted Eelfrost. Eelfrost battled against two ShadowClan warriors. Honeylight and Nightcloud. Heartstorm growled. Eelfrost was looking panicky. With a snarl, Heartstorm launched himself on Nightcloud. He pulled her away from Eelfrost. Honeylight looked surprised and for a moment, she was distracted. Eelfrost barged into her, knocking her to the ground. Meanwhile, Heartstorm dug his claws into Nightcloud's side. She whirled around and shot out her right front paw. She caught Heartstorm near the eye. He felt her cold claws dig into his skin right under his eye. His world went blurry. He stumbled back. Nightcloud leapt at him and they rolled to the ground. Heartstorm felt a burst of anger and pushed her off with a grunt. She rolled away and he bit into her tail hard. Nightcloud turned around, her eyes flashing with anger.
"Traitor!" she hissed. Heartstorm ignored her. He dodged another of her blows then shoved her to the ground. Then he grabbed her tail in his mouth and dug his teeth into it. He tasted more blood and a hard tendon. Nightcloud wailed in pain. Heartstorm didn't stop. He tugged at her tail and bit harder. His jaw tightened. Nightcloud lashed out her front paw and caught Heartstorm on the ear. She wriggled and tried to break free but Heartstorm didn't let go. He kept her tail clamped in his mouth. Suddenly, he felt the strong muscle break. Nightcloud's tail went limp. Nightcloud's eyes widened. A horrible cry echoed from her mouth. She took a step back then fled through the crowd. Heartstorm breathed heavily then turned around. He couldn't dwell on Nightcloud. Eelfrost was still battling Honeylight. She was stronger and leaner than Heartstorm remembered. Honeylight had almost pinned Eelfrost to the ground. He was bleeding from cuts on his side and Eelfrost's left ear looked messed up. Without thinking, Heartstorm leapt off the ground. He landed with a loud thud onto Honeylight's back. She collpased onto Eelfrost. Eelfrost slipped out from under her and sunk his teeth into Honeylight's ear. Meanwhile, Heartstorm held her down and clawed at her sides. He felt the skin break and blood seep through. Honeylight wailed and sprang free.
"Heartstorm!" she spat and lashed out at him. Heartstorm was taken aback by her voice and didn't dodge. Her unsheathed paw hit Heartstorm hard. His world swirled. Heartstorm waited for Honeylight to pounce on him and bite into his neck but it didn't come. He shook himself and took a ragged breath. He slowly got up. Eelfrost was panting, looking around the Clearing fearfully. The fight was still raging but now some cats had ventured out of the Clearing. Only a few more cats remained. Heartstorm spotted Embergaze laying on the floor in the shadows. Eelfrost glanced at Heartstorm, nodded at him in thanks and then rushed towards Embergaze. Heartstorm spotted Coldpelt battling with Darkspeck. Darkspeck's eyes blazed with anger and rage. He was battling as if he didn't care for his life. Or Coldpelt's. Heartstorm charged at them and into Darkspeck. Darkspeck hit the ground with a loud thud. In a flash, Coldpelt had him pinned down. Heartstorm lashed at Darkspeck's face. Darkspeck reared up and hissed. Coldpelt bit into his stomach and Darkspeck knew it was time to go. Heartstorm hissed as Darkspeck sped off. Coldpelt took a deep breath. He suddenly looked frail.
"You ok?" asked Heartstorm. "Where's Frogleap? Bumblepaw... Go see one of them." Coldpelt gave a small nod.
"Thanks," he breathed then limped off. Heartstorm looked around. There was no sign of Blacktail. No sign of Reedstar. No sign of Bumblepaw. No more cats remained in the Clearing except Embergaze and Eelfrost. Heartstorm hoped Embergaze was alright. Eelfrost turned to Heartstorm, his eyes wet with sadness. Heartstorm stood on the spot. He had to find Bumblepaw. His kits. His mate. Eelfrost knew understood. He gave a slight nod. Heartstorm bit back a sob and whirled around. He raced into the long grasses and out of the Clearing where the battle still raged on.
