Ch. 40

Heartstorm stood with a group of cats at the camp entrance. Finally Reedstar emerged followed by Blacktail. He flicked his tail.

"Sorry for the delay," he said. "Let's go." Together, the group of cats made their way towards the ThunderClan border. Silverdrop pressed close to Heartstorm.

"Do you think they'll give us a warm greeting?" she whispered.

"About as warm as we did," Heartstorm muttered. Finally, they reached the ThunderClan border. Waiting for them was Waspnose and Palebird. They greeted the RiverClan cats solemnly.

"This way," Waspnose said. Heartstorm almost couldn't believe it as they slipped into the tunnel and emerged into ThunderClan. They padded towards the forest without a word. Heartstorm felt chills run through his back. He was in unfamiliar territory. They walked into the forest. Shadows flickered everywhere. The sunlight was blocked by the large trees. Heartstorm didn't like it. Suddenly, Heartstorm heard voices and the strong smell of ThunderClan. They reached large brambles and Waspnose slipped under. Reedstar followed him then the rest of RiverClan. Heartstorm noted that Palebird stayed last. Heartstorm went after Silverdrop, he bent down and crawled underneath. He found himself in  a large clearing. There were many dens. They all looked as if they were covered in brambles. ThunderClan was surrounded by large trees protecting them from light and wind. Cats around the Clan stopped and turned to us. Of course, they knew RiverClan was coming but they still muttered amongst themselves. Falconstar appeared, he looked more confident and at home than ever. Heartstorm had never seen him like that.

"Greetings, RiverClan," he announced. "Today will be the first time we will be training to fight together. We will go the clearing and train for battle against ShadowClan."

"We will start immediately," finished Reedstar. Falconstar nodded and walked towards the camp entrance. RiverClan followed Falconstar out and a lot of ThunderClan warriors followed behind. Nobody talked. Only Reedstar and Falconstar politely chattered together. They reached a large clearing. RiverClan stood to one side and ThunderClan stood to another. Falconstar tutted.

"We are allies. We cannot be like this in battle," he told everybody. "I'd like everyone to tell their names so we can get to know each other better. As we are in ThunderClan, my Clan will start first." Reedstar sat down slightly in front of the group of RiverClan cats. Heartstorm watched as Palebird stepped forward.

"I'm Palebird," he said in a strong voice. Heartstorm smirked. Bumbleheart, a large tabby warrior pushed his chest out.

"I am Bumbleheart," he declared. Heartstorm felt Silverdrop flinch at the name.

             "I'm Mistpool," said a silver she-cat.

"Darkstorm," a dark cat said, eyeing RiverClan accusingly. Heartstorm knew him and didn't back down when their eyes locked. A light orange she-cat came forward and mumbled her name.

"Speak up," Darkstorm spat. A cat Heartstorm knew as Bumblepaw went next.

"I'm Bramblescar," he said. He had become a warrior now. Another cat Heartstorm knew as Webpaw introduced himself as Webclaw. Then there was Blackfang and Blizzradcall followed by Duckpelt and finally Applenose.

"Thank you," Reedstar said, not looking very thankful. Now it was RiverClan's turn. Sparkbelly went first, being right next to Reedstar.

            "I'm Sparkbelly," he said.

             "Moorpelt," said Moorpelt.

              "Beestripe."

              "Embergaze."

               "Softcry."

                "Smoketail."

"Rainfeather." Silverdrop flicked her tail and her eyes scanned every ThunderClan cat. Heartstorm saw a few toms look at her in awe and he felt pride blaze in his chest. ThunderClan only wished they had cats like RiverClan in their Clan.

               "I'm Silverdrop," Silverdrop said finally.

"And Heartstorm," finished Heartstorm, without glancing at the cats facing him.

"Right now that we all know each others names lets pair up," decided Falconstar. "Every cat goes with another cat from a different Clan. And we will have duels. No unsheathed claws. No hurting or harming ok? We're allies not enemies." There were a few mumbled yes and cats warily walked towards each other. Heartstorm waited to watch who had Silverdrop. She paired up with Applenose. He was glad for it as Applenose had kits and seemed ok. Heartstorm saw all his Clanmates join with another cat grumpily. Palebird approached Heartstorm, his eyes glimmering with mischief.

"Well big guy, guess it's you and me," he grinned. Heartstorm didn't reply.

"You may star whenever," Reedstar said. "We will come around and check on you." In a flash, Palebird leapt forward. He lashed out his claw. Heartstorm ducked quickly and twisted around, throwing out his right foot. He was suddenly wide awake and his body was buzzing. Palebird stumbled but didn't trip over. He lashed out once again and jumped. Heartstorm pushed Palebird off him and bit into his tail. Then he twisted around and tugged. Palebird grimaced in pain and angrily started to claw at him. Heartstorm dodged a few blows then went for a strong back kick. Palebird was knocked off balance. Heartstorm was on him in a second. He rolled Palebird onto his back and bit into the back of his head. He didn't feel any pain. He didn't feel anything. Just the adrenaline pumping through him and the anger. Palebird rolled out of Heartstorm's grasp and toppled into him. Heartstorm felt himself hit the ground and quickly pushed off before Palebird could pin him down. He then hit Palebird hard on the head. Palebird growled and brought out his front paw hard into Heartstorm's cheek. Heartstorm stumbled back but didn't stop for a moment. He quickly lashed out once again and Palebird staggered back blinded for a moment. Heartstorm took his chance and leapt onto him, snarling angrily. He pinned Palebird down and clawed at his exposed stomach. Palebird tried to twist around to bite him.

"Good Heartstorm," commented Reedstar from nowhere. Heartstorm wasn't listening. As Palebird flipped over, Heartstorm barged into him. Palebird was knocked to the ground but now he was burning with anger. Without a thought, Palebird shoved Heartstorm off himself and landed on top of Heartstorm. He dug his claws into Heartstorm's side. Heartstorm felt hot pain in his sides and he groaned. He was more angry than ever. He unsheathed his claws in a swift motion and swiped Palebird's face. Palebird dropped off him, his cheek bleeding. Heartstorm rolled to his feet and shook himself. He crouched and leapt. He dug his claws into Palebird's shoulder and Palebird bit him hard into his ear. Heartstorm felt Palebird tugging hard. Heartstorm cringed in pain. He finally tore himself free and slashed Palebird's other cheek. Blood splurted out. Palebird looked furious. He jumped onto Heartstorm, slashing at anything he could. Heartstorm did the same, feeling happy whenever he felt his claws dig into something soft.

           "Heartstorm!" yelled a voice.

"Palebird!" came another. "Palebird stop!" Palebird leapt off Heartstorm and glared at him, breathing hard. Heartstorm growled and shook himself. He turned to face Reedstar and Falconstar.

"What is the meaning of this?" spat Falconstar. "You are the only two pair who started to fight without control." Heartstorm was defiant but now felt slightly bad. Palebird spat at the ground.

"How am I supposed to?" he growled. "This is what I've been training for. To rip RiverClan's pelts off." Reedstar let out a small growl and his tail moved in irritation. Falconstar flicked his tail to silence Palebird.

"You're not training with us anymore," he said gravely. "Get back to camp." Palebird hung his head but stood where he was. "I said get back to camp. Now." Palebird sighed and turned around. Silverdrop had stopped fighting as well and was staring. Heartstorm couldn't find the confidence to meet her eyes. He just looked at Reedstar.

             "Heartstorm, why?" Reedstar asked calmly.

"I'm sorry Reedstar. I didn't mean to... We got carried away," Heartstorm apologised honestly. He felt bad. "I won't do it again."

"Do you need medical attention?" asked Reedstar. Heartstorm shook his head. He would deal with it. Reedstar nodded.

"Don't do it again," he warned. Falconstar stared at them, his eyes dark.

"So, aren't you going to punish him," he asked, raising his eyebrow.

"Heartstorm will not do it again," assured Reedstar.

"It doesn't matter. He did do it. And he must be punished. I punished my own. Now you must," Falconstar retorted.

"I will deal with my Clan however I like," replied Reedstar. Falconstar looked angry and upset. He opened his mouth to say more but finally just glared at Heartstorm.

"Applenose, go get Coldpelt," ordered Falconstar then he marched off. Reedstar walked after him. Applenose shot off and Silverdrop trotted to Heartstorm. She licked one of his bleeding wounds.

"Why did you do it?" Silverdrop asked.

"I just- we got carried away," Heartstorm shrugged. He didn't like the sad look Silverdrop was giving him.

"Heartstorm don't get yourself hurt where you don't need to," she said.

"I'm sorry. Don't worry about me," Heartstorm told her.

"How am I not to worry when you get yourself into a fight for no reason?" retorted Silverdrop coldly. "Heartstorm, you're not the only cat in the world who cares about things. You don't need to be the only one who worries about things. I worry too." Heartstorm frowned, confused by Silverdrop being suddenly mad.

"I don't want you to worry," Heartstorm told her.

"Yeah well I do," Silverdrop said firmly. "And if you want to help me not to worry, then stop doing stupid things. Like having a stupid fight with our allies." Heartstorm watched slightly heartbroken as Silverdrop stormed off. He had never had a fight with her like this. He felt cold, alone. He wanted to run after her and apologise but he knew she wanted space. So he stayed rooted on the spot.
