A hero, by definition, is someone who is admired for great and brave acts. Somebody who is noble and just. With great powers, or superhuman abilities, or divine origins, they save people and expect nothing in return. They put their lives on the line for others, they sacrifice everything for the world.

Lenna is no hero.

She doesn't want the grandeur, the inevitable fame, or the starry-eyed look in everybody's eyes when they look at the heroes they hold up on their high pedestals. What Lenna wants, what she has always wanted, is a home. Love. Safety. The foundational pillars of a life worth living.

The heroic fame is better left to her best friend. Her partner in metaphorical crime. Wally West has the speed to chase what he wants, and he has always wanted more.

It started with the recreation of his uncle's experiment, the attempt to be just like his idol. Wally always wanted, yearned, for the chance to be a hero— to carry on his uncle's mantle was a lifelong dream. Even if the world doesn't recognise him as anything more than a mere sidekick, a dream is a dream. And Wally is living his.

But the mantle Lenna wears like second-skin is more a dangerous, double-edged sword than a hopeful light. She's a Star Sapphire, a wielder of the powerful violet light of love. But that power comes with a dark history. The Star Sapphires of the past have been corrupted by the very thing that gives them their strength—love twisted into obsession, their hearts consumed by rage and vengeance.

Lenna knows this, feels the pull of that darkness every time she taps into her powers. Love is powerful, yes—but so too is hate, jealousy, and grief. She knows her fair share of the latter. The very idea of being a hero, of fighting for justice and peace, feels hollow to her when she knows how easy it is to be swayed by the possibility of more.

And yet, there is always Wally—his infectious optimism, his belief in the good in people, his conviction that they can be the heroes that the world needs. He believes in Lenna, even when she doesn't believe in herself. In his dreams of being a hero, she knows he pictures her at his side. The one thing she can never promise.

She knows Wally won't understand. Not now, at least. He's always chasing after more; more recognition, more love, more speed, more excitement. He's running, always running, chasing a future that he believes is just beyond his grasp, never slowing down to truly see what's in front of him.

In the end, Lenna knows what will happen. She knows that Wally will chase his dreams of heroism, of being everything he believes he can be—and in doing so, he will keep running, he'll never tire or stop. She will fall into the darkness, and no amount of love, no matter how strong, will be enough to pull her back.

✶ Me after literally One message convinces me to bring back my oldest, and first ever, Young Justice oc despite giving most of her plot lines to Yue. However, we ball. Lenna has always been one of my favourites, my special little Star Sapphire who then got taken down and turned into a Green Lantern just to come back now as a Star Sapphire again cause why not!

✶ Lenna hails from an original world and, while it's not really explored too heavily in this fic due to Lenna's story being centred on Earth, I hope to one day explore the planet further considering I've been working on it since about 2020 and have various ocs originating from there. Some people might recognise some themes from Elden Ring, aka the Golden Order's name, and that's because I was going through an Elden Ring phase while revamping Lenna's storyline late last year. It is what it is.

✶ Lenna and Wally are slightly inspired by timebomb (jinx and ekko) in arcane, though I will be leaving everyone to guess exactly how they relate. Ma Meilleure Ennemie was on repeat as I planned this fic, hence the catchline being the line "the worst of all blessings, the best of all curses".

✶ This book is very specially dedicated to bayports who not only made the beautiful cover currently being used as of january, 2024, but a series of other heartsick covers as well as most of my covers over the years. i'd truly be lost in the graphic department otherwise. this is also specially dedicated to the chapel of solitude (goldenveils & gryzons) & timerbombs who listen to me yap and have helped me figure things out for this fic and many others, also a big thank you to doha for creating my moodboards when i got trapped in a creative block <3
