Dong-Wook gets a message from Runa saying that they need to talk. Figuring that maybe she found something about Taehyung's whereabouts since he hasn't been so lucky on that front, he doesn't think too much of it and invites her over to his place.
Not even a few minutes later as he sits down on his couch, kicking his feet up on the ottoman with a glass of bourbon in his hand, his phone buzzes in his pocket. He assumes it's her and doesn't look at the caller ID before answering it.
"Hello?"
"It's Jimin."
The underboss hums, slightly surprised because he didn't expect to get a call from the man, "What's up, boss?"
"She knows. I gave her the hard drive earlier today."
Dong-Wook stays silent for a few moments, processing what that meant and then he realizes that's probably why she's coming over to talk with him. In his mind, he hopes she can be empathetic and understand why he kept this secret all these years.
Let's just say he wasn't looking forward to this day for the simple reason of facing her wrath. Much like him, it was never a good idea to piss her off and on the other side of the phone, the mafia boss already knows what's going through the man's mind about this.
"Wow, she trusted you? That's a bit surprising", the underboss finally responds, gulping down his drink before grabbing the liquor bottle and pouring more into it.
And the man on the other side chuckles, his tone lighter and at ease as opposed to how it usually is, "She doesn't trust me, not yet at least. It took some convincing and that meant giving her specifics about shipments she asked about just to prove who I was. The girl is smart."
"Just like her mom and brother", the underboss says and he hears a pleased hum.
"Indeed, I guess we all share that same trait. Speaking of, is she coming over to your place? I assume she wants to talk to you and ask questions she needs you to answer. It couldn't have been easy watching our mother say those things even if it is the truth."
The older man sighs, distress clear on his face as he leans his head back and closes his eyes, "I just hope she isn't angry with me."
"For keeping this secret?"
"Exactly. Especially with what's happened with Taehyung and Dori lately. Both of them have been keeping secrets and adding this to her already long list won't make her feel any better. I just hope she doesn't question my loyalty."
Jimin hums in understanding, "Remember who you are to her. I'm sure she knows she'll always be able to rely on you. You shouldn't doubt that."
"But-"
Jimin cuts him off before he goes on ranting, "Dong-Wook, you've known her all her life. She might be upset but once she processes this, she'll understand. Just give her some time if that's what she needs."
The underboss nods to himself and decides to hope for the best and pray to God that the worst doesn't come, "I will. What about you? Are you liking New York so far?"
The tone shifts between them and Jimin chuckles at that, "It's got its good parts, but I'm here for my sister. When this is over, when Min-Su is done with, I plan on staying here by her side."
The underboss hums approvingly, "If all goes well, I doubt Runa would ever allow you to leave her. Because you two never saw each other she'll want to get to know her secret sibling."
"That's true. Just make sure you tell her everything and hold nothing back. No matter what it is, now that she knows, we won't be hiding anything else from her anymore. Got it?"
"Yes, boss."
"Alright, I'll talk to you later. Let me know how everything goes...if you're still alive of course."
Dong-Wook gapes at the tease, "How dare you say that to me?! I'm worried enough as it is and I don't need you adding to it..."
The man laughs mischievously and Dong-Wook can imagine the playful look on the younger man's face, "Good luck, old man."
"Hey!"
Abruptly, Jimin hangs up the phone and Dong-Wook grumbles under his breath at how annoying the mafia boss is, and how much he's like his sister with that attitude.
"I swear this kid...", the man groans and rubs his aching temples, and of course in that short moment of peace, he panics all over again when he hears the doorbell ring and he jumps to his feet to get it.
"Deep breaths. She might hate you...and that's not ok but we got this", he mumbles to himself, hoping to feel some source of encouragement but he wasn't too happy at confronting her even when that's what had to happen.
Luckily, when he peeks through the peephole in the door and sees Runa and Jungkook standing there with Cookie by her side, she doesn't look too upset and as he exhales deeply, he opens the door and presses his lips into a thin line.
"Hey, come on in. Have you found out anything about Taehyung and Dori? Because I-"
"I know, Dong-Wook", she steps inside the place and takes out the hard drive from her pocket, showing it to him and he gulps with a nod, sitting down at the table.
As they all sat down in silence, she'd never seen him this worried. He looked stressed, running his hands through his hair and biting his lip. Often times he was the most calm and composed until someone pissed him off, but other than his short temper and low tolerance for bullshit, he was always chill.
Right now he was anything but that. The energy in the room was uncomfortably tense as they each waited for the other to speak up first, all their eyes staring at the digital chip resting on the dining table. Jungkook didn't ask questions about what happened because he didn't have to. He knew as soon as she calmed down and texted Dong-Wook that he would see things for himself.
"Get your laptop please", she directs toward the underboss who immediately gets up to do so, knowing this meant business.
She had an unreadable expression on her face, but he could see how puffy her eyes were and how her voice was strained, indicating that she must've cried. Just the thought made him sick, he hated this because it would hurt her, but the truth always hurts. That's just a fact of life and she's strong enough to handle it.
So as he signs into his laptop, sliding it over in her direction, she plugs in the hard drive and turns up the volume, both men watching with her as the video plays. To say it was appalling to find out what her father had done, and how the mafia boss of Russia was her secret brother was putting it lightly.
Jungkook had seen some twisted shit in his life, but he didn't realize how deep this web of lies was until he saw a woman that almost looked identical to Runa trying to explain her life through gut-wrenching sobs. And after it was finished, he glanced over at Dong-Wook who had his head down.
As she shut off the laptop and put the digital chip back in her pocket, she looked over at Jungkook who kept his firm gaze on the underboss sitting not too far from him. And after the heavy silence, he finally lifts his gaze and looks at Runa who patiently waits for his explanation.
"What do you want me to say?"
"The truth."
The man folds his hands together, regret clear in his eyes and Runa can't be mad at him. She never could and there was no reason to be. He did what he had to do to protect her and her brother and she could see things from his perspective. She knew he could be trusted and in the end, this was all for her. So she wasn't too salty at the fact that all her life, he had withheld this information.
"Your mother made that for you because she knew she didn't have much time left. She gave it to me and told me that if you survived, I needed to look after you and give you this at the right time."
"So all these years, after all this time of working for my father, it was to take him down? Figuring that once I found out the big family secret I'd want him dead?"
"Yes, the plan was to get rid of him. We might be killers but we don't betray our own and that's exactly what he did. I know I'm a traitor, but the only people I'm loyal to are you and Jimin. Along with his father and your mother when they were alive. They were my true family, and now that they're gone, I've looked after you and your brother all these years."
That makes her eyebrows furrow with confusion, "What happened to Jimin when my dad left with my mother?"
"He showed little mercy by allowing him to live, although he just left a toddler alone with his dead father lying on the floor to keep him company and no extended family to care for him. When I was at the Organization and met Min-Su, I had to pretend like I didn't care because of Jimin. I had to play along so he'd put me in control and I reassured Rae-Jin that I was still on her side."
"As soon as Min-Su left, I went to their home as soon as I could and found Jimin clinging to his father. He didn't even care that he was lying in his blood...he just sobbed for him to wake up. He was only three and he should've never seen that. So I took it upon myself to take care of him and keep him a secret from Min-Su. Because if he ever found out I helped their child he'd know I wasn't on his side."
"It was hard, losing both of my best friends but I stayed strong for their son. I cleaned the boy up, packed his things, and sent him to live with the Russian mafia leader at the time. We were well acquainted and he and his wife raised Jimin. I never told Rae-Jin about her son because if she knew he was alive, she'd try and find him and I couldn't let her do that. She had to keep you safe."
Runa nods understandably, listening to him and taking it all in. At this point, she wasn't surprised anymore. Min-Su raping her mother in front of her toddler brother was enough to ensure that any feelings were dead, and nothing would stand in the way of getting revenge. She understands perfectly and earlier's breakdown made her feel so numb that she knew she could take whatever else that was coming her way.
Taking her silence as a sign to continue, he does so and relaxes in his seat, "I didn't stay with Jimin throughout his childhood but I always talked with his adoptive parents to make sure he was doing good. He got therapy and from what I know, he doesn't remember much. After he turned 18 and was finishing his training to become the next heir to the Russian crime family, I came back and told him who I was."
"He and I had a conversation with his mother and father and I told him everything. That's when he was determined to find you, to gain his power and influence so he'd be able to take down Min-Su and get his sister back. It wasn't easy, but he was born for this just as you were. So when his adoptive father, the Russian mafia leader passed away, he took his place and kept his identity secret from everyone else to ensure his safety and your own."
Runa then asks, "So all this time you've been working for Jimin? Is that right?"
"Yes, I'm his consigliere."
She hums in thought, folding her arms across her chest, "And now that I'm older, he wants us to join together as siblings and take down my father. And what...I rule the Kang Empire in partnership with the Russian mafia?"
Dong-Wook nods, "That was the plan."
Taking a deep breath and clearing her dry throat, she turns to Jungkook to see his reaction towards all of this. As usual, he has that nonchalant expression and glances her way, already knowing what she is going to ask.
"What do you think about this?"
And to that, Dong-Wook also awaits his answer and the bodyguard turns to him with some skepticism in his eyes.
"Is Taehyung somehow involved in this too? I'm wondering why if her brother is so protective that he allowed a psycho like him to remain alive and close with his sister."
Runa returns her gaze to the underboss, raising a brow at the way his mouth is slightly agape in surprise at Jungkook's quick observation. Which he of course was getting to that part.
"Taehyung was working with us, that's why we gave him the benefit of the doubt because Jimin knew him and didn't expect to be betrayed. Taehyung was two-timing us, and that's why we had to find him and kill him. Who knows what he's told Dori and this drug lord that he's working with. It can't be anything good."
Jungkook scratches his cheek and taps his fingers against the table, "So what I'm getting from this is no one knows who this guy is, and if Runa and Jimin band together as the sibling duo and take down Min-Su, she will rise to power and get her hands on this drug lord?"
"That's what we're hoping."
Jungkook hums in thought, "I'm assuming Jimin knows about me too."
"He trusts you."
The bodyguard raises a brow, "Why is that?"
"Because he knows who you are and I tell him everything that happens. I trust you and he trusts me. He knows you have good intentions and we all have a similar goal here. Protecting Runa", Dong-Wook retorts.
Jungkook stops questioning since he's satisfied with the answers. Although he doesn't know who this Jimin guy is, watching their mother talk on screen makes him believe that this is real and he can tell by the sincerity of Dong-Wook's voice that he can be trusted.
"I'm assuming Jimin's here in New York. Are we going to meet with him soon? Because we need to figure out what's going on with the Yakuza", Jungkook says and Runa nods in agreement.
"Well not just yet. I have to call him and-"
Runa's phone rings abruptly, cutting Dong-Wook off and when she sees the caller ID, she signals for them both to keep quiet and answers it while putting it on speaker.
"Dori?"
The man on the other end chuckles and she rolls her eyes, "Hey princess. I have a gift for you. As an apology for what Taehyung did, my boys and I taught him a lesson and left him at the cabin, tied up and all for you to play with."
Runa hums, seemingly uninterested, "Is that so? How can I trust what you say? It could be a trap, you know."
The man gasps playfully, "I'd never! It's the truth. He betrayed us, and I like you Runa. You're a sweet little thing, even if you are a tease. You're the mafia princess after all and I should show my respect."
"Yeah? Then why did you take Taehyung from us in the first place? It makes you seem suspicious", she retorts, playing along with his game and Dong-Wook just grimaces at the man's obnoxious voice buzzing through the open space of the dining area.
"Like I said, we needed to teach him a lesson."
"What did you do?", she curiously asks, making him giggle.
"Let's see...I cut off his balls and forced them down his throat. Right about now he should be puking them up all over his fancy wood floors", he laughs crazily and she wonders if he was being serious or laughing at her.
"Could you show me some evidence?"
The Yakuza leader whines in offense at her skepticism, "Come on, princess. I'm not lying but fine. I'll send you a picture that I took just before we left."
A few seconds later, her phone pings with a notification and she taps on the photo he sent, seeing Taehyung lying on the floor with his wrists and ankles bound by rope and a pool of blood near his lower half. She grimaced and shifted uncomfortably with a sigh.
"Alright, I'll take your gift of gratitude. But why exactly did you hurt your friend because of me?"
The man giggles again, "Because I'm crazy about you, princess. Even if you reject and tease me, I wouldn't mind trying to be a little closer to you. Best friends perhaps?"
That earns a hum of uninterest, "One wrong move and you'll cut something off though. Just like you did with your other best friend. Isn't that right?"
Again, he gasps dramatically like the drama queen he was, "Princess! How could you say such a thing?! I might be an unpredictable man but I'd never lay a finger on you. Not even if you dragged my pretty face through the mud and degraded me in front of my men. I serve as a loyal soldier to the Kang family and that means you, Runa."
"Wow. Shock. Gasp. What a surprise", she mumbled sarcastically and he clicked his tongue at her lack of seriousness towards him.
"Princess, Taehyung is all yours now. I'm sure you're pissed about that little bruise you got. Fuck him for daring to lay a hand on you!", he shouts and a gun goes off, meaning he probably just shot one of his men out of anger, something he did too often.
Clearly Taehyung had rubbed off on the male, because he was starting to sound awfully similar. With the pet names and crazy talk of course. Both of them were delusional and she mentally sighs at the man's annoying voice.
"Look at you getting all possessive. Well, I have a toy to play with so I better get going. I'll consider him as your apology. Again."
The man laughs in amusement and delight, "Good girl! I'm excited to hear what you do to him. Don't spare me any details because I want to know everything. I'll talk to you later, princess, and make sure to have fun! Toodles!"
As soon as the call ends, she groans and stretches her arms up, glancing at both men who just look at her with a certain emotion in their eyes.
"What?"
They share a look and Dong-Wook sighs in exasperation while running a hand through his fluffy black hair, "He's worse than Taehyung."
"Uh huh, can we go kill him now?", she asks with a gleam of excitement finally peaking through.
He looks over at the bodyguard who shrugs, down for anything and he figures since she seems to be in better spirits now that she got Taehyung delivered right to her practically gift-wrapped, it wasn't a bad idea and it'd be good for her to let out some pent up anger.
Today was a rough day for all of them and the best solution to that was beating the man who tried to kill her until he couldn't breathe anymore and was a pile of blood, guts, and mush stained into the ground.
So with a tight-lipped smile and a nod, he gets up and claps his hands together, "Let's not waste any more time then."
Currently, Dong-Wook waits outside smoking a cigarette on Taehyung's wrap-around porch while Jungkook watches from the corner of the living room as she beats him to death with one of his golf clubs. Taehyung screams in pain and still finds enough energy to occasionally laugh as blood platters all over the walls and onto her face and clothes, making her like a psychopath.
It only added to the bloodbath Dong-Wook had left behind, the bodies still scattered about and it only made her feel better to hear him scream as she beat him. She imagined it was her father, and she smiled sinisterly as she flipped the man on his back and sat on his broken ribs, making him cough up blood and groan from pain. His usual golden skin was ghostly, and the loss of blood starting to finally wear on him because fuck he just wouldn't die.
Even with that smile on his face, they both know how this will end and the golf club clatters to the floor as she takes out the dagger he tried to use on her the other night. He watches the light in her eyes sparkle with amazement at the weapon, the blade so sharp that one small press of the tip could break skin.
And of course, it was a deep shade of purple, something specially made for her unique tastes. The silver gleamed in the light coming from the fireplace which Jungkook had started as soon as they got inside, keeping the lighting low since it was late.
She presses the blade against his throat and he stiffens when she leans down close to his face, her eyes as black and merciless as the night sky, "I'm going to slit your throat and watch you choke on your blood like the traitorous pig you are. And guess what?"
Pressing the blade into the side of his neck just enough to nick him, he gasps and is unable to speak from the lack of oxygen flowing to his brain, "I'm going to enjoy every second while you bleed out and the life drains from your eyes. Scary isn't it?"
He shakes his head, opening his mouth to speak but he choked when she slices his throat and blood gushes out and hits her face that was stained with blood.
And just as she said, she laughs at the horrified look on his face and watches in awe as his soul leaves his body and his head falls to the side, his eyes open but dead. He was gone and it sent a chill of pleasure rushing down her spine. It had been some time since her last kill, and God did it feel liberating.
Runa stood up with a satisfied look on her face, yawning and stretching her arms up with a casual demeanor as if she hadn't brutally tortured and killed the man lying cold on the floor. She turns to Jungkook to see he isn't fazed by the violence and right on time, Dong-Wook throws his cigarette out and walks in to see Taehyung is dead and Runa looks like a maniac, her cherry red pumps covered in crimson just as the rest of her outfit was.
"Looks like you had fun", he says with a hint of a pride on his face when she wipes the dagger on one of the blankets lying on the couch and puts it back in the holster.
She turns to him and nods with a pleased look on her face, breathing a bit heavily since she had been beating the man for half an hour and she was now drained, "I did. It's a good thing Cookie stayed in the car. I wouldn't want her to see me looking like...this."
The two share a small laugh and Jungkook steps forward, "We should get you cleaned up. Wouldn't want to ruin your nice leather seats now would we?"
She hums at that, "Good idea. Mind assisting me?"
"No problem."
"I'll wait in the car", Dong-Wook announces and she tosses him her car keys while he swiftly catches them and walks out of the cabin as the two head upstairs to the bathroom.
"Do you feel better?", Jungkook asks as he watches her wash her hands, bloody water filling the sink and she sighs, glancing at his figure that was leaned up against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Somewhat. It puts my mind at ease to know I have one less obsessed man to worry about", she responds while ducking down to splash her face with water.
Her hair wasn't pulled back and she mumbled curses to herself because it kept falling into her face until he came up behind her and pulled back her hair, holding it while she got cleaned up.
Jungkook knew how difficult today must've been for her, due to her mental breakdown earlier and her half-hour session of torture to release whatever emotions trapped inside. She'd get through it as she did everything else, and he'd be there by her side as support when she needed someone to lean on.
He couldn't even imagine how she must feel, learning of her mother's past, even seeing the woman and hearing her voice at all must've been painful. And to learn what her hateful, disgusting excuse of a father did to Rae-Jin, her husband, and their son.
It was monstrous and he could tell by the emptiness that now created a void in her eyes, she was anything but fine and was putting on a strong front. Her strength and resilience were admirable, and holding her shaking body in his arms earlier made him realize just how much she was going to go through and how hard this was going to be. Because this was not the end.
Runa had never dealt with anything like this before, but to know that when she fell, she'd be caught, was reassuring. Jeon Jungkook, the man that despised physical contact held her in his arms and made her feel protected even when her heart was slowly shattering and she couldn't hide her despair any longer.
He made her feel safe and when she turned off the sink and looked up at him, water dripping down her now clean face, she knew in her soul that this was her ride or die, along with Dong-Wook. Just the sweet gesture of him holding back her hair made her feel something swirling in her stomach and she cleared her throat, grabbing a clean hand towel to pat dry her face. He released her hair from his grip, watching as it fell down her back.
"Thank you, Jungkook", she mumbled, drying her neck and avoiding his intense gaze as he looked at her through the mirror with furrowed brows.
"For what?"
"You know what...", she says, indicating her meltdown earlier.
It was embarrassing and made her face get warm, not just because of how he looked at her or how he towered over her body, but because she'd never cried like that before in front of anybody. Hell, she wasn't sure she'd ever cried in her entire life, and yet in that moment he knew not to ask questions and held her in his tight embrace even when physical affection wasn't in his skill set.
"You don't need to thank me for that. You needed me and I was there for you. As more than just a bodyguard. But as your friend."
Hearing him say that, even in his monotone voice made her cheekily smile while putting down the damp towel, "Are you admitting we're friends? Do you consider me to be your friend? You truly mean it?"
Upon hearing the teasing underlying her tone, he gives her a certain look while raising a brow, "Don't get cheeky about it, yeah? It's late and we should go. I'm sure Cookie's hungry and wants dinner."
She huffs at his dismissiveness but trails behind him with a small smile on her face as they descend the stairs and he calls the company for a clean-up job. Due to the display of rage created by yours truly, the cabin looked like a massacre, but that was their life. And every single one of them slept like a baby, not losing a wink of sleep even after the nauseating stench and sight of blood that they had all grown accustomed to.
