YUYAN looked through the nameplates at the front door of the men's dormitory until her eyes fell on the familiar Chinese letters. „There he is!" She grinned and pressed the doorbell once. She pursed her lips until she heard a click and Renjun's voice echoes through the speaker.
„Hello?" He asked, his voice sounding groggy and sleepy. „Oh, good morning, Renjun!" Yuyan greeted. „D-Did I wake you up?" She asked through the speaker and heard Renjun cuss in Chinese. She pressed her lips together. „Snapdragons, I didn't think you'd be this early!" He exclaimed and Yuyan chuckled. „Silly you. I told you I want to be early." - „But the game starts in two and a half hours... anyways. Do you want to come upstairs and wait for me or do you want to stay downstairs?" Renjun asked and Yuyan looked around. It was pretty chill for a spring morning. „I'll come upstairs if that's okay." She said and soon heard the buzzer for the door. „Third floor, room 323", Renjun told her and Yuyan grinned and started running up the stairs.
Once she reached his room, she knocked and turned the doorknob. Renjun had already unlocked the door for her. „Make yourself a home, I'm going to take a quick shower!" She heard his voice from the bathroom and nodded.
„Yuyan, what do you usually wear for a soccer match?" Renjun called from the bathroom and Yuyan looked down at herself. „Today I'm wearing one of our school sweaters over a dress!" She answered back and walked over to Renjun's bed to look at the Gouache paintings on the wall.
There were drawings of animals, the moon, landscapes and people. One of the pictures looked like a drawing of Renjun and his friend. „You're very talented, Renjun!" Yuyan called and heard Renjun chuckle. „Thank you. But painting is just a hobby for me. I'm more talented in the piano!" He called and Yuyan could hear the water run in the bathroom. She smiled.
It was fun taking a new friend to the soccer game of her beloved Mark. Especially because Chunhei didn't have time for her today. She saw that a shop in Hongdae was selling art-inspired clothes and she wanted to get some as soon as they hit the shelves. Her other reason for not coming to the soccer match was, that she already had a partner to go with.
„Listen, Yuyan. I love you to bits. But I can't deal with another 90-plus-minutes of you screaming how sweet and talented Mark Lee is. Also, you're going with this Longjin guy, so you don't need me.", were Chunhei's words. When Yuyan told her the guy's name was ‚Renjun' and not ‚Longjin' Chunhei was ignoring her and continued looking through her Gustav Klimt artbook.
Yuyan looked at the paintings that were spread across of Renjun's desk, finding a painting of a brunette girl with a phone. „Huh?" She said and tilted her head. „That one looks like—" The minute Yuyan wanted to say something, a hand snatched the painting away from her.
The girl looked up and looked into Renjun's flustered face. „Don't look at this one yet. It's not finished." His cheeks were burning red and he fanned himself with the painting. „I'm sorry", she bowed. „I did not want to snoop through your things. It just caught my eye." - „It's okay. I shouldn't have snapped this fast. I just don't like people looking at my unfinished paintings." That was a lie.
Renjun just didn't want the pretty girl to look at the painting he made for her. It was a painting of Yuyan, from when he first saw her at the gallery. But for now, he didn't want to show her, so he quickly hid it under a few of his sketching books.
„Anyways", he chuckled. „What should I wear?" He asked lifting two clothes hanger in the air. Yuyan, already forgetting the awkwardness from earlier, looked at the two shirts Renjun was holding up.
The right hanger had a flannel in the school's colours and the left hanger had a slightly oversized navy coloured hoodie with white words on the chest. „I'd go with the flannel." Yuyan spoke and Renjun nodded and slipping into the flannel.
„I just need my wallet and bag and we can go." Renjun smiled and Yuyan nodded. „You were really fast now." - „You wanted to get good seats, so I showered quicker." He smiled at the pretty girl in front of him and started searching for his stuff.
Yuyan smiled and took her phone out of the skirt pocket. She saw a notification on the screen and blushed, seeing that Mark had sent her yet another selfie. She quickly opened the message and read what Mark said. She blushed at his words; I can't wait to hear your cheers later, Yuyan! You're my lucky charm! The selfie itself was heartwarming too.
It was Mark, holding his soccer jersey and smiling brightly into the camera. Yuyan smiled and locked the phone, before pushing it back into the pocket of her skirt. „Ready?" Renjun asked, coming from his bathroom. Yuyan nodded and walked to the door.
Renjun followed the girl and they walked downstairs. Yuyan almost skipped down the stairs. „You must be a big soccer fan, I guess." Renjun said, opening the front door of the men's dormitory for her.
Yuyan chuckled. „I started liking soccer after starting college, to be honest. Before that, I had no interest in sport at all." She chuckled and walked next to Renjun—even though she walked a bit faster than him. Renjun didn't mind though. He liked seeing her happy. And he was excited for their hot pot date later.
He wanted to text Donghyuck and tell him how excited he was, but his best friend was on a date too, and he didn't want to disturb Donghyuck and his crush. So he fanboyed by himself.
The Chinese duo soon arrived by the soccer field and Yuyan excused herself for a second and ran to a prettily dressed girl, handing out paper banners. Renjun waited for Yuyan to come back.
Yuyan was still chatting to the girl, holding the paper slogan in her hand. The two girls chuckled until Yuyan turned around and called Renjun over. „Come on, Renjun! Let's go and sit down!" Yuyan leads the way and walked through the bleachers until she found her favourite spot—the one where Mark would see her immediately: the middle row by the stairs since Yuyan liked to stand up throughout the match and cheer for her crush.
„Are you sure you want to sit here on the side? The middle is completely free?" Renjun asked after sitting down next to Yuyan, who was playing on her phone. „Hm?" She asked, after stuffing her phone back into her pocket. „I asked if you're sure that you want to sit here." He repeated and Yuyan explained that it was her favourite spot to sit.
At this moment Renjun's eyes fell onto the paper slogan in Yuyan's hands. „What's this?" He asked when another voice called for Yuyan. Renjun looked to the source of the voice and saw one of the soccer players standing by the bleachers and calling Renjun's date.
Renjun blinked twice. „Excuse me", Yuyan said and stood up. With a few steps, she reached the soccer player that ruffled her hair. Renjun felt a lump growing in his throat and carefully turned around the paper slogan Yuyan left on her seat.
„She must be a big fan", Renjun told himself, while he looked at the picture of a brightly smiling goalie. He tried to swallow the lump in his throat and turn around the slogan. „He must be a close friend of her..." He said again as he watched Yuyan and the goalie take a selfie before the player disappeared again and Yuyan came back.
„Sorry, that took a while. Mark-sunbae just needed to see his lucky charm." She giggled in the cutest way Renjun had ever heard and smiled. „You two must be really close", his voice was almost a whisper and Yuyan chuckled. „I wish we were close", she smiled and put the paper slogan back on her lap. „But I'm okay with how our friendship is at the moment."
Hearing the word friendship, made the lump in Renjun's throat shrink and he could take a deep breath. „I see. Are you excited for hot pot later? I've been craving it all week!" He said and Yuyan chuckled. „Me too! I haven't had good hot pot ever since coming to Korea. I'm expecting a lot, Huang Renjun!" She smiled brightly and Renjun felt flowers bloom in his chest. Her smile was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.
