GRACE WATCHED AS her father paced the living room. It had been three days and their grandparents were still staying with them, sleeping in the guest bedroom. He stopped for a moment and looked over at her with an anxious look. "Why don't you go grab daddy a beer from the fridge." He raised a brow in Grace's direction as she quickly stood up from her seat to grab her father a beer from the fridge. Her mother was sitting at the table with her grandmother smoking a cigarette and chatting. They looked over at Grace as she grabbed a beer. "I hope that's not for you." Her grandmother spoke with a playful look.
She shook her head and laughed. "No, Grams. It's for dad." She let out another low chuckle before going to give her father the beer. He took it from her and patted her back as a way of saying thank you. Instead of taking her seat on the couch, she went upstairs to her room. She was planning to do some studying for a huge test but she was missing her Spanish textbook. She let out a dramatic groan before going to see if Fallon had one.
She knocked on the door but Fallon couldn't hear her over the music. She pushed the door open and scrunched up her face when the smell of weed hit her nose. Fallon was dancing around her room singing along to the music that played, it brought a smile to Grace's face. She cleared her throat and startled her sister who looked over at her with a surprised look. "What do you want?" She asked taking a seat on the edge of her bed. Grace walked in and closed the door behind her.
"What are you doing?" She asked completely forgetting about her textbook.
Fallon rolled her eyes at her sister's very obvious question. "What does it look like?" She asked with a slight attitude. Grace walked in and took a seat next to her sister.
"I'm sorry Fal. For everything." She lowered her head as she spoke. Fallon looked at her for a while before letting out a sigh, she scooted closer to her sister and wrapped her arm around her.
"I know. I'm sorry too, we can't help that we're fucked up." She spoke playfully causing Grace to laugh.
The both of them wrapped their arms around one another and enjoyed the peace that was between them. Grace pulled away and looked at her sister before looking down at the joint in her hand. "Can I try it?" She asked nervously. Fallon looked at her with a surprised look.
"Are you kidding?" She asked through laughter. The look on Grace's face remained serious. Fallon stopped laughing noticing the serious look on her sister's face. She thought about it for a minute before shrugging her shoulders. She locked her bedroom door before turning her music back up.
"If you have to cough, put your face in this pillow." She tossed Grace a throw pillow. She twisted her face in confusion but listened to Fallon.
Fallon let out a sigh as she lit up the joint that was between her fingers. She took the first few hits before passing it to Grace who still held a nervous expression on her face. "If you don't want to, you don't have to." Fallon rested her hand on her sister's shoulder.
Grace shook her head and told Fallon to shut up. She took the joint and took a small hit, she coughed a bit but it wasn't bad so she took another. Her second hit was bigger so she grabbed the pillow and coughed into it. Fallon handed her a water bottle which she quickly took a sip of. Once her coughing slowed down, she looked over at Fallon and grinned.
"That's wasn't as bad as I thought it would be." She took another sip of water before taking another small hit. A knock at the door scared her, Fallon held up her hand and motioned for Grace to shut up and calm down.
Fallon opened the door and smiled seeing her grandma. She could smell it but she didn't care that much, she did the same thing when she was her age. "Do you know where Gracie went?" She asked with a confused look.
"Oh, she's in here with me. We're talking." Fallon spoke with a smirk on her face. She knew her grandmother didn't care but she still didn't want to say it out loud. While Fallon was talking with their grandmother, Grace was taking a few more small hits.
Fallon finally shut the door and noticed her sister. She took the joint from and ignored her groaning. "That's enough unless you want to deal with dad."
Grace realized Fallon was right. She took a small sip from her water bottle and laid back on a pillow. "So what made you want to try smoking? You normally act like a nun." Fallon asked with confusion lacing her voice. Grace sat up and shrugged her shoulders.
"I don't know. I've been thinking about it for a while and I guess I was just too scared to say anything."
Fallon furrowed her eyes brows. It dawned on her that she barely knew anything about her sister, her father drove them apart that much and it made her sad. She would've loved to have a closer bond with Grace but because of their father, that wouldn't happen.
Her phone pinged with a message from her mom. She reached over and grabbed her phone.
mom: Dinners done. Come down, tell Grace.
She looked over at Grace who was in her own world. "Mom says dinner is ready." She looked over at Grace whose eyes widened.
"Just tell her I'm sick. I'm going to sleep." She spoke in a panicked tone. Fallon held up her hands and told her sister to calm down.
"I've got you. Just got to your room." She watched as Grace anxiously rushed to her bedroom. Once Fallon came out into the hallway, she bumped into Mariah.
"Hey, Fallon! What's up?" She pulled Fallon into a hug.
"It's been a while. Where you been?" Fallon raised a brow as Mariah shifted awkwardly. Chris came walking from his room with an annoyed look on his face. Mariah said her goodbyes before following after him down the stairs.
Fallon went downstairs and helped her grandmother grab some plates from the cabinet. She excused herself when her phone rang, it was a call from Maddy. Fallon answered with a grin on her face. "What's up, Mads?" Her smile dropped seeing the background. It looked like Maddy was sitting outside.
"Are you busy? I need you to come get me." Maddy's words slurred a bit as she spoke, which made Fallon even more concerned.
"Maddy, what's going on?"
"Nate and I just got into an argument and I really just don't want to be here anymore. He picked me up and now he doesn't want to bring me home. Can I actually stay at your place tonight?" She asked poking her lip out dramatically.
Fallon abruptly nodded her head. "I'll be there soon. Stay outside." She said her goodbyes and hung up the phone. She went over to her mom and discreetly told her that she was heading out for a bit, she pulled her in for a hug which surprised Fallon a bit.
Fallon slid some sneakers on and went out to her car. She turned the radio up a bit and zoned out to the music before she pulled off, Maddy sent her Nate's address and she put it in her gps.
He lived about twelve minutes away from her house. When she pulled out front, Maddy was sitting on the curb. She didn't notice Fallon pull up until she rolled down the window and called out for her. Maddy climbed into the car and sniffled a bit.
"Thank you." She mumbled while placing her hand on top of Fallon's. She looked over at Maddy with a gentle smile on her face, the two of them shared intense eye contact for a while. Fallon took a moment and focused on the way Maddy's dimples deepened into her cheeks as she smiled, even if it was just a slight smirk. Maddy let out a sigh as she anxiously turned away, facing the road. There was a weird tension between the two, Maddy kept her hand on top of Fallon's as they continued the short drive back to her house.
