It was the next day when Belle found herself sitting next to Cristina in a room filled with interns, Cristina was suturing a banana and looked slightly crazy, making Belle inquire "What on earth are you doing?", "I'm suturing a banana, with the vain hope that it wakes up my brain." The Korean woman replied making their fellow intern, George snicker in laughter, prompting a sleep-deprived Cristina to snark "What're you smiling at, 007?" which in turn made George stop laughing. "I'm sorry, I get mean when I'm tired, I don't know how Belle isn't tired."
Belle smiled at the Korean beside her while George replied "You know what? I don't care. I comforted a family, and I get to hang out in the OR today. All is well." Then almost as if she ignored George's comment she inquired Does anybody know why we're here?" And as if god was hearing Cristina, Derek Shepherd entered the room saying "Well good morning. I'm going to do something pretty rare for a surgeon, I'm going to ask interns for help. I've got this kid, Katie Bryce. Right now, she's a mystery. She doesn't respond to her meds. Labs are clean, scans are pure, but she's having seizures. Grand mal seizures with no visible cause. She's a ticking clock. She's going to die, if I don't make a diagnosis."
He made a small stop to catch his breath and to see if everyone was paying attention before continuing "Which is where you come in. I can't do it alone. I need your extra minds, extra eyes, I need you to play detective, I need you to find out why Katie is having seizures. I know you're tired, you're busy, you've got more work than you could possibly handle. I understand. So, I'm going to give you an incentive. Whoever finds the answer rides with me. Katie needs surgery. You get to do what no interns get to do. Scrub in to assist on an advanced procedure. Dr Bailey's going to hand you Katie's chart. The clock is ticking fast, people. If we're going to save Katie's life, we have to do it soon."
Everyone grabs a file and leave the room, allowing Belle to walk to where most patients without a room or awaiting surgery stay, a perfect spot for her to read over the file of the case that she's been for nearly two full days, where noise isn't too loud or too low. That was until she heard another intern say "Did you just page me...." making a nurse reply "Yes, PB, still short of breath." at this the intern sighed and countered "Look, give the antibiotics time to work." to which the nurse counter countered "The antibiotics should've worked by now." leading to the intern commenting not so nicely "She's old, she's freaking ancient. She's lucky she's still breathing. Now, I got a shot to scrub in downstairs and a patient who wasn't alive during the civil war. Don't page me again."
Belle rolled her eyes at this and walked away, allowing Cristina to approach her and ask "Hey, I want in on Shepherd's surgery. You've been the intern on Katie since the start. You want to work together? We find the answer, we have a fifty-fifty chance of scrubbing in." Belle jumped slightly, not having expected Cristina to appear but replied "I'll work with you, no problems. You look like the intern that will least likely to annoy me to death." Cristina smiled at her words and walked with the ginger to the packed library.
"Well, she doesn't have anoxia, chronic renal failure or acidosis. It's not a tumor because her CT's clean." Cristina said as the two women found themselves on the floor of the library researching, "What about infection?" Belle frowned, racking her brain, which consisted 97% of the scientific encyclopedia, "No. There's no white count, she has no ceteal lesions, no fevers, nothing in her spinal tap." Cristina countered before looking at the file on her lap and inquiring "What about an aneurysm?"
Belle stopped, quickly reaching for the file and flipping it to the page where it said that Kristie was a rhythmic gymnastics pageant making bang her head backward into the bookcase, "Of course, why didn't I think of this?" She grumbled lowly, earning a "What are you talking about?" from Cristina. "Get up, come on." She quickly said before leading Cristina out of the library and explaining "You know what her pageant talent is?", "They have talent?" Cristina comments, "Rhythmic gymnastics, it's something with a ball. But she twisted her ankle, a few weeks ago when she was practicing for the pageant, meaning she fell. It was no big deal, not even a bump on the head, you know she got right back up, iced her ankle and everything was fine, it was a fall so minor her doctor didn't even think to mention it when you were taking her history, but she did fall."
Cristina seemed to understand Belle's train of through and as they passed an elevator, which Derek was coincidentally about to enter Cristina called out "Oh, oh, Dr. Sheppard! Just one moment, um, uh, Katie competes in beauty pageants." Cristina said, "I know that, but we have to save her life anyway." Derek sassed, "Okay, she has no headaches, no neck pain, her CT's clean, there's no medical proof of an aneurysm but what if she has an aneurysm anyway?" the Korean woman attempted while Belle merely nodded along with what Cristina was repeating, "
"There are no indicators." Derek said again, "Ah, but she twisted her ankle, a few weeks ago when she was practising for the pageant..." Cristina started but the attending doctor said "Look, I appreciate you're trying to help, but this is not helping!" this annoyed Belle and caused her to hiss at the man she'd let crash on her couch "She fell. When she twisted her ankle, she fell." Derek looked at Belle's determined face as Cristina echoed Belle's earlier words "It was no big deal, not even a bump on the head, you know she got right back up, iced her ankle and everything was fine, it was a fall so minor her doctor didn't even think to mention it when I was taking her history, but she did fall."
"Well, you know the chances that a minor fall could burst an aneurysm, one in a million, literally!" Derek said as the elevator door finally closed as Cristina wasn't keeping it from closing. The two women shared a look and started to walk away when the elevator opens again and Derek walks out this time, saying "Let's go." "Where?" The two women inquired in unison, only to have Derek say while walking ahead "To find out if Katie's one in a million."
