57.0 The One With The Positive Test

Justin Foley sat on his bed, with his girlfriend, as Lainie Jensen sat on the bed across from them. The door of the shed opened, and a sweaty Clay Jensen entered, followed by Matt Jensen. "I was just out for a run." Clay groaned, placing his phone on the table. He went into the bathroom.

Lainie stood up from the bed, approaching her husband. "I found him out on Navy Pier this time." Matt spoke to his wife. "Just standing there."

"I lost track of time, that's all. I-" Clay exited the bathroom, turning to his father. "How did you even find me?"

"Clay, last week you go out running, and you end up in front of Bryce's old house." Lainie explained, placing her hands on the table. "And now you're at the place where he got killed?"

Clay shook his head. "I didn't mean to go there. I- I just- I just kept running, and I didn't hear my phone because I was- I was thinking."

Lainie let out a sigh. "Well, uh- we told you that we were going to be doing random drug testing on you three while Justin was still in the program, now seems like as good a time as any." She grabbed a bag and set it on the table.

Justin stood up from his bed, followed by his girlfriend. "Like, right now?"

"Yes, right now." Lainie nodded, taking the supplies out of the bag. "Is that a problem?"

"It's not a problem for me." Elizabeth shrugged, turning to her boyfriend.

Justin looked between her and Lainie before nodding slowly. "No. No, it's not a problem."

"Jesus, you're overreacting." Clay scoffed.

"We just want to make sure you're being safe, okay?" Matt spoke. "We just want to know that we can trust you."

Clay shook his head, sighing. "If you trusted us, you wouldn't be testing us in the first place."

"Okay, Clay, that's enough." Lainie snapped at her son. "You're up first." She handed him a cup, and he sent her a glare before taking it and walking into the bathroom.

After all three teenagers had taken the test, Clay's was positive. He stared at the test. "I mean, the test must be expired or something."

"No." Matt shook his head. "The tests are fine."

Clay frowned as he looked over at Justin. "Then he must have switched the samples."

"Wait, you're claiming he did what?" Elizabeth exclaimed, crossing her arms over her chest. "How would he have fucking switch them, Clay?"

"I don't know. I'm sure it's something he would know."

Justin let out a scoff. "What does that even mean?" He turned to the Jensen parents. "Guys, I have been going to all of my meetings. I have been checking in with the counselors." He looked over at Clay and then back at Matt and Lainie. "I'm doing good."

Lainie sent Matt a look before he spoke. "Justin, did you go back to your old neighborhood last week?"

Elizabeth looked up at her boyfriend and furrowed her eyebrows. "What?"

"How did..." Justin was lost for words. He ran his hand over his mouth before answering. "Yeah, I might have."

"What were you doing there?" Lainie questioned him.

Justin threw his hands in the air. "I wasn't buying drugs."

"Okay." Matt nodded. "So, why were you there?"

Justin moved his hands into his pocket and shook his head. Lainie let out a sigh. "If that's how it's going to be, then you are all grounded."

Elizabeth's eyes widened. "I literally did nothing."

"All of you are grounded." Lainie repeated, causing Elizabe4th to roll her eyes and groan. "Until one of you can tell us why this test is positive, none of you are leaving this house apart from going to school. Understand?"

"I still don't get why I'm included in all of this, but whatever."

The other two Jensen kids nodded. "All right, get some rest." Matt spoke before him and Lainie exited the shed.

"You're fucking using again?!" Clay snapped at Justin.

"Fuck you. You know I'm clean."

Elizabeth stepped in between the two boys. "Clay, back the fuck off."

Clay chuckled. "Then what were you doing in your old neighborhood?"

"You tell me, because clearly, you followed and then ran straight home to rat me out to your parents!" Justin shouted.

"I didn't follow you." Clay shook his head.

Justin looked down at his girlfriend and crossed his arms over his chest. "Did you fucking follow me, 'Liza?"

"No." Elizabeth frowned.

"Then how the fuck did they know I was there? Hmm?" Justin crossed his arms over his chest. "They were asleep when I left, and they were asleep when I came home."

Clay furrowed his eyebrows. "How did my dad know I was at the pier? He just happened to see me from the overpass? He just happens to find me last week?"

"He left way after you, so he couldn't have followed you." Elizabeth shrugged.

Clay looked down at the phone that Matt and Lainie had gotten them all for Christmas. "What if it's out phones?"

"What?" Justin questioned him.

'They gave all of us these phones for Christmas with a bunch of apps already loaded." Clay spoke, picking up his phone and turning it on. "What if one of those apps is, like, tracking us?"

Elizabeth chuckled at her brother. "Dude, you're being so fucking paranoid right now. Dad found you because you've been doing a ton of crazy shit lately, like showing up at the pier or Bryce's house."

"Yeah, what the hell?" Justin scoffed.

"Why were you in your old neighborhood?" Clay retorted. Justin shook his head, leaning against the table. "What the hell have you been up to, Justin?" Justin didn't say anything. "Yeah, that's what I thought."

Elizabeth looked down at the test. "Why'd you test positive, Clay?"

"Fuck you." Clay snapped at his sister, making his way into the bathroom.

Jessica Davis, Tony Padilla, and Alex Standall sat at a table in Monet's after school with Clay and Elizabeth. "My dad knew how much Diego and I have been texting, and he knew what was on the texts." Jessica spoke before taking a sip of her coffee.

"He probably tracks your GPS too." Clay rolled his eyes.

"This is crazy, right?" Alex shook his head as he spoke.

Elizabeth looked down at the table. "I doubt it's a coincidence."

Jessica learned back in her seat. "I mean, it's not just us. That's why Beecher cancelled his party." The Find Your Drink Party was supposed to be that week, but Beecher's parents found out, and now it was cancelled.

"We have more to lose than Beecher does." Clay shrugged and looked over at Alex. "Isn't your dad on you all the time?"

Alex nodded. 'I mean, yeah, he's been watching me closely, but he doesn't track my phone."

"How do you know that?" Elizabeth let out a sigh.

"He trusts me." Alex answered. "Yes, I get the irony."

"Tony, I- I mean-" Clay stammered, turning towards his best friend. "This isn't crazy, right?"

Tony shrugged. "Your folks don't seem like the type to track you."

"Well, how else have they known everything?" Clay questioned him.

"Where's Justin?" Jessica raised an eyebrow at her best friend. "Why isn't he here?" Elizabeth just shrugged.

Elizabeth sat on a couch next to Isabel Henry at the Find Your Drink party that Clay was able to make happen. "No Justin?" Isabel asked her friend.

The girl shook her head. "It's not really his scene anymore." She smiled before taking a sip from her cup of alcohol.

"Yeah, that makes sense." Isabel nodded, giggling a little bit. She glanced over at the table full of kids and saw Jessica laughing. Isabel let out a sigh. "Why'd I fall for a straight girl?" She turned back to Elizabeth. "Like, I actually don't know."

"She's Jessica Davis?" Elizabeth shrugged. "She's beautiful and a female powerhouse."

"You're right."

"I'm always right."

Isabel laughed, patting Elizabeth's shoulder. "I'm not so sure about that." She watched as Elizabeth continued to drink the alcohol in her cup until it was empty. "Maybe slow down?" Isabel furrowed her eyebrows.

"Nah." Elizabeth shook her head, standing up from the couch. "It's a fucking party, so I'm gonna get drunk!" She giggled before walking over to the table filled with drinks. She didn't even know what she had just drank. Some kid gave it to her, telling her she would love it.

Elizabeth looked down at all of the bottles of alcohol, trying to decide what to go with. "You want me to made you what I got?" The girl looked behind her to see Zach Dempsey standing with a cup in his hand.

"Yeah, what is it?" Elizabeth nodded as Zach stepped next to her.

"It's called the Z-Man Rocks." Zach chuckled, pouring a bit from every bottle on the table into the cup. "It's everything the Z-Man can get his hand on." He smiled before chucking a few ice cubes into the cups. "On the rocks."

"Clever." Elizabeth rolled her eyes, taking the drink out of his hand. She took a sip. "It's not bad. Surprisingly."

"That's what I thought." Zach shrugged, turning towards her. "Listen, I wanted to apologize for how I've been treating you lately. It's not your fault that you don't have feelings for me." Zach sighed, looking down at his hands. "I wanted to take it out on you, and I've finally realized what a fucking dick I've been."

Elizabeth sent him a small smile. "Thanks. But I haven't been the best to you, either, and I'm sorry for that."

"You're fine." Zach nodded. "I just hope that everything will be okay between us from now on, because I just want you in my life. It doesn't matter if it's romantic or platonic. I just need you there."

"Thanks, Zachy." Elizabeth chuckled, wrapping her arms around him.

Zach hugged her back, breathing in her smell. He loved everything about her, even the way she smelled, so much that it made him sad. He frowned before pulling away. "I'll see you later?" He left her before she could respond.

Later that night, everyone stood in the back yard of the house because the football players had announced they would be pouring one out for Montgomery De La Cruz. "Hey, everybody, listen up!" Diego Torres yelled as he stood up on a bench, trying to quiet everyone down. "I just want to say, welcome, everybody, to this year's find your drink." Everyone in the yard cheered. "Now, there's one person who was really looking forward to this party because they wanted our senior year to be bigger and better than anything before, but he cannot be here with us tonight. So, instead, we're going to pour one out in his honor. Now, I know some of you didn't like Monty, but I think we can all agree he deserved to live to see this day." Diego noticed Montgomery's sister standing next to Jessica. "Hey, Estella, get over here. You got to be apart of this too."

Estella De La Cruz looked up at Jessica with wide eyes. "Will you come with me?" She questioned the girl, who nodded in response.

The two girls made their way over to the football players, and Diego wrapped his arm around Estella. Luke handed her a shot. "To our friend and brother." Diego spoke, raising his shot into the air. Many of the teenagers watching raised their cups too. "Monty De La Cruz."

"To Monty!" Many kids shouted.

"Rest In Peace, man." Diego sighed as he poured the alcohol out his cup, causing teenagers on the yard to do the same.

"Hey, I've been looking for you all night." Elizabeth stood in the kitchen and then turned around to see Justin standing behind her.

"Hey." Elizabeth giggled, having just finished her third cup of whatever Zach kept giving her. "I thought you weren't coming."

Justin shrugged. "I wanted to keep an eye on Clay, who's fucking stoned right now, and then we got in this big fucking fi-"

"Stop talking about my brother." Elizabeth cut her boyfriend off before kissing him.

The boy frowned, pulling away. "Not right now, baby." Justin shook his head, and the girl nodded.

She looked down and noticed he had a drink in his hand. "Should you be drinking? Like, is that okay?"

"What about any of this is okay?" Justin retorted, setting his drink on the kitchen counter and leaning on it. "It just is."

"Don't think like-"

"My mom has been texting and calling me."

Elizabeth's eyes widened. "She's back?" She came to a realization. "That's why you were visiting your old neighborhood?"

Justin nodded. "She's in bad shape. She just wants money." He let out a scoff and then frowned. "She doesn't give a fuck about how I'm doing, of course."

"What are you going to do?"

"I'm going-" Justin took in a deep breath. "I'm going to keep trying not to die." He looked his girlfriend straight in the eyes. "Try to stay out of jail."

"Hopefully that won't be too hard." Elizabeth chuckled. "I'm always here for you. For anything." She sent her boyfriend a small smile.

The boy returned the smile. "I know that, babygirl." He brushed her hair behind her ear and leaned closer towards her. Elizabeth pressed her lips against her boyfriend's, and he kissed her back, pushing her against the kitchen counter lightly. The girl giggled as she ran her hands through Justin's hair.

Zach Dempsey walked into the kitchen but froze when he saw Elizabeth and Justin kissing. He let out a sigh. He knew how much they loved each other, but it still hurt every time he saw they together. He believed he loved Elizabeth more than Justin ever could. He just wished he could get her a chance to show her that.

The two broke apart when they heard yelling in the room next to them. They ran into the room to see Clay on top of a boy from a different school, punching him. Elizabeth watched as Zach grabbed him and pulled him off of the other boy. "Hey, get off me!" Clay shouted as Zach dragged him away. Clay pushed himself away from Zach, and turned to the crowd watching him. "Who wants next?! Who wants it, huh?!" He shouted. "Come on!"

"Clay, what are you-" Justin approached Clay, but the boy just pushed him back.

"What the fuck is going on?" Elizabeth snapped, moving to stand next to her brother.

Clay made eye contact with Winston Williams. "I will end you." He snarled, pointing at him. He breathed deeply as he looked around, noticing everyone was staring at him.
