56.0 The One Where They Can't Keep Arguing All Of The Time

The next morning, the entire senior class sat at picnic tables while Lainie Jensen spoke to them about the scavenger hunt they would be doing. "Everyone gets a sheet of clues, and a GPS device, which I hope you know how to operate." She spoke to the kids as she looked down at the piece of paper in front of her. "We've collected all of your phones, and if anyone has a second phone, then you're disqualified."

"And, also your parents are too rich." Diego Torres spoke up, causing teenagers to laugh.

"Hidden around this camp are canvas bags with treasure inside, like this one." Lianie continued as Officer Standall held up a bag with the words 'Senior Camp' written on it.

Officer Standall began to speak. "So, all these clues have been design to keep you in safe places, but this is the wild. We're out here alone, and we need to look out for each other. So stick with your partner, please. And if you should encounter some wildlife, try to remain calm and back slowly away."

"Then come back to camp and change your underwear." Diego spoke again, causing Elizabeth Jensen to roll her eyes. Why did he feel the need to always pull attention to himself.

"Yes, thank you, Diego." Officer Standall nodded before continuing. "All right, stay safe, and have fun."

The entire senior class disbursed into their pairs. Elizabeth had paired herself with Isabel Henry because her brother refused to take anyone except Justin Foley.

Elizabeth and Isabel began their adventure through the woods. Elizabeth looked down at the paper in her hands as Isabel worked the GPS they were given. "Why aren't you with Jessica?" Elizabeth asked as the two walked through the woods.

"I think the answer is obvious." Isabel sighed, staring down at the GPS.

"Don't let her and Diego get you too down, okay?" Elizabeth sent her friend a smile. "She's probably just with him to make sure he doesn't do anything else to Clay."

Isabel rolled her eyes. "Yeah, I don't know."

"If Jessica chooses Diego over you, then something is really wrong with her."

The two were quiet until they heard Clay Jensen scream, "Justin!"

They shared a glance before Elizabeth started to run towards where she heard the yell. "Justin?!" She shouted as she rushed throughout the woods. She repeated her boyfriend's name as she searched for him. She had lost Isabel along the way but was too worried about finding Justin to worry about it. She ran into a small clearing, seeing Justin standing with his back towards her. "Justin?" She asked, causing him to turn around. His face was covered in dirt. "Shit." She sighed out of relief, running up to him and throwing her arms around him. Justin chuckled, patting her back. "What happened? I heard Clay yell your name, and I just ran." She noticed he had a pocket knife in his hand.

"Beecher and a couple other guys tackled me and held me down until Clay ran off." Justin explained, pulling away from the hug.

"Fuck." Elizabeth groaned. "We have to find him."

The pair heard a few twigs snap near them, and froze. Justin brought his finger in front of his lips, telling Elizabeth to be quiet. She nodded as they slowly and quietly walked to where the noise came from. Justin began to ran once he saw a football player, and tackled the boy, screaming, "Motherfucker!"

The two boys grunted as they landed on the ground, and screamed in each other's face. Elizabeth noticed the football player was Charlie St. George and pulled Justin off of him. "What the actual fuck!" Charlie yelled from his position on the ground.

"Shit." Justin groaned, rubbing his temples.

"Sorry." Elizabeth sighed as she helped Charlie up. "We thought you were a football player."

Charlie looked down at himself with wide eyes. "I am a football player!"

"Yeah, we know that." Elizabeth nodded.

"And so is Justin." He shook his head, very confused as to what was going on. "What the fuck is up?"

Justin took a deep breath, collecting himself, before speaking. "Have you been with Beecher and those guys?"

"I was supposed to be with Zach, but he ditched me." Charlie shrugged.

Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "Of fucking course he did."

"What did Beecher do?" Charlie questioned.

Justin shook his head. "It's nothing." He spoke as he started to look around.

"Tell me."

Elizabeth looked up at Justin, who was too busy staring into the woods to answer. "Him and a couple of other guys held Justin down, and then Clay ran off."

"I knew it was Beecher because I could smell his nasty-ass body spray." Justin finally looked up at Charlie. "And now, I have to look for Clay or- or them."

"They're fucking with Clay again?" Elizabeth nodded in response to Charlie.

The trio heard a scream in the woods, and all looked in different directions. "Or with us." Justin sighed, turning back to the other two. "All right, come on. Let's go." The three ran off into the woods.

They made their way to the log cabin the football team had claimed as their own. The unlocked the door walked in cautiously, looking around. "Shit. They're not here." Justin groaned.

Charlie shrugged. "If we hang out, they'll show."

"We should go back and report Clay missing?" Elizabeth turned to exit the cabin, but Justin grabbed her hand.

"That's attention we don't need." Justin shook his head, letting go. He walked further into the cabin.

"We, also, don't need Clay lost." Charlie spoke.

They jumped when they heard the door slam, and turned to see Diego with Luke Holliday. "What the fuck?!" Diego screamed at them.

"What the fuck?!" Justin exclaimed. "Where's Clay?"

"We don't know."

Elizabeth's eyes widened. "How the fuck do you not know where he is?!" She tried to approached Diego, but Justin held her back.

"What are you guys doing?" Justin asked, rubbing his girlfriend's back. "What's the game?"

"We just-" Diego looked at the ground. "We fucked with the clues, okay? We sent people places to freak them out. That's it."

"That's all we did." Luke finally spoke up.

Diego frowned as he began to pace. "And there's shit happening that is not us. There's something out there."

Charlie chuckled, not believing him. "Diego, man. Give it up. You're a somewhat decent DB, but you are a shitty liar."

They all heard muffled screaming. "Guys, this is all really fucked up." Elizabeth screamed as she moved behind her boyfriend. "Can you just please stop whatever the fuck you are doing?"

"It's not us!" Diego exclaimed.

The screaming continued, and they saw a shadow move in front of the door. It opened, and someone fell onto the ground. It was a Beecher with no pants on. Luke moved to help him up, and Elizabeth noticed he had tape over his mouth.

"I told you. It's not us."

Elizabeth crinkled her nose in disgust at seeing the boy with no pants on. "Can we please get him some pants before my eyes start to bleed?"

*

Later into the night, they group were all still in the cabin, and Jessica Davis had joined them. "Look, whoever it is, whatever it is, it came after us." Diego spoke from his bed. "They fucked up our tent and stole our shit. They attacked Beecher."

"You guys fucking deserved it." Elizabeth spat, and Justin put his hand on her knee to try and calm her down.

"Where the fuck is Clay?" Justin asked.

Diego shook his head. "Why do you care so much about that little prick?"

"He my brother." Elizabeth frowned.

"We don't know where he is."

"I'm telling you, it's the dead kid." Luke spoke from his seat in the corner of the room.

Beecher's eyes widened. "It's the woods. It's the ghost of Burnham Woods."

Justin rubbed his eyes. "Come on, stupid."

"Can you honestly tell me you didn't see or hear anything fucked up out there tonight?" Diego questioned, walking closer towards Justin. Elizabeth and Justin shared a look and shook their heads. Diego looked over at Jessica, who was staring down at the ground. "Jess?"

She looked up at him and opened her mouth, but no sound came out. "Jess, what happened?" Elizabeth asked, moving closer toward her friend, but everyone jumped up when she heard metal scraping outside the cabin.

Diego rushed to the door, trying to open it, but it was locked. "Alright. We're scared!" Jessica yelled. "Enough, please!" The metal scraping continued around the whole cabin until it was replaced by a thumping noise. "Hey, fuck off, asshole!" The girl shouted. There was a chuckle from outside before the whole cabin began to shake, causing the lights to go out. The noises stopped.

*

About twenty minutes later, everyone was sitting around the room. "We're going to starve in here." Luke stated with a frown on his face.

"You're not going to starve anytime soon." Justin spoke as he pulled Elizabeth closer towards him, wrapping his arm around her.

"Hey!" Luke snapped. "I have very low body fat, Foley." He looked down at his body. "This is muscle."

Charlie smiled, pulling a bag out of his jacket pocket. "I have a few granola camp cookies." They all gave him a look before they heard a banging on the door. They all stood up, trying to prepare themselves for what was going to enter the cabin.

There were a few more thuds before the door slammed open, causing the teenagers to scream. Zach Dempsey entered the room, causing everyone to sigh out of relief. "What the fuck?!" Elizabeth gasped, burins her head in her boyfriend's chest.

"This thing is getting all kinds of fucked up." Zach spoke.

Luke's eyes widened at the open door. "We're out of here."

Him, Diego, and Beecher ran outside. "Are you fucking kidding me?!" Jessica yelled after the boys. "Stop them!"

"We're all getting the fuck out of here." Justin tried to rush out the door, but Zach blocked him with his hand.

"No." Zach spoke before closing the door to the cabin. "We've got to talk."

Zach began to tell the group what Alex had told him, that him and Winston had become a thing. Then, Alex broke things off when he found out that Winston was probably using him to figure out answers about Montgomery De La Cruz because him and Montgomery were together on the night Bryce Walker was murdered.

"So, Winston and Alex?" Justin asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

"I kinda knew." Elizabeth shrugged, causing everyone to look at her. "I knew they were hanging out, but I didn't really know they were a thing."

Zach sighed before speaking. "And Alex is, like, heartbroken. And now we're fucked." He chuckled. "Oh, sorry. More fucked."

"That's not very fucking helpful right now, Zach." Elizabeth snapped, rolling her eyes. "We know that we're fucked. We don't need you to rub it in our faces."

"Uh- literally nothing you ever do is helpful, 'Liza, so you can just shut the fuck u-"

"Zach." Justin groaned, cutting him, off. He pulled Elizabeth closer towards him, and Zach let out a scoff.

"Does Winston know why Alex did it?" Charlie asked.

They heard another bang at the door. "Not again." Elizabeth sighed as Zach approached the door and opened it to reveal Tony Padilla. "Fucks sake."

"Can we leave the damn door open now?" Jessica exclaimed.

"Diego pointed me this way," Tony explained to the group of teenagers, "so what the fuck is going on?"

Zach crossed his arms over his chest. "Winston Williams can alibi Monty."

"Seriously?" Tony sighed, and Zach nodded. "The Hillcrest kid?"

"He knows Monty didn't kill Bryce because he was with him that night." Zach explained to Tony. "Oh, and on top of that, Clay and Ani have known that for months."

"I'm sure it was just to protect us." Justin shrugged.

Zach scoffed. "Big surprise. They failed."

"At least they tried, unlike you, who was given up on everything in life." Elizabeth frowned at Zach.

"You're the fucking reason I gave up on everything."

"You can't just keep blaming everything on me!"

"Yes, I can!"

Jessica sighed, rolling her eyes. "The two of you really need to get your shit together. You can't just keep arguing all the time."

"Yes, we can." They two spoke in unison, staring at each other.

"Whatever." Charlie spoke, trying to get the group on track. "So, the email was Winston? I mean, is he going to talk tonight?"

"We don't know that it was Winston." Tony answered. "Other people might want it out."

Zach cocked an eyebrow. "Like who."

"Like Tyler." Tony answered.

Justin shook his head, not understanding. "Tony, what makes you say that?"

"Guys, maybe it was Ani." Jessica spoke up from behind everyone. "Think about it. It's way easier for her to hack Clay than Winston, and now she's not even here?"

"Honestly?" Justin cut Jessica off. "Any one of us could have written that email."

Zach sent Justin a glare. "Including you."

"Yes, Zach, including me." Justin nodded. "So, are we going to fucking fall apart about it, or are we going to trust each other? Whats it gonna be."

Elizabeth looked down at her hands. "We need to find Clay."

Officer Standall stood in the open doorway of the cabin. "Hey kids. Everyone okay?" Everyone awkwardly stood up from their seats. "Shall we get back to camp?"

*

Elizabeth sat on a log in front of the campfire as Justin sat next to her with two cups of water in his hands. He handed her one cup, and she sent him a smile. Everyone around the fire heard a horn blow and turned to see Clay holding five of the canvas treasure bags. "I won." He sighed, dropping the bags.

"Where'd you get all that?" Diego questioned him.

Clay frowned as he approached Diego. "You left me for dead."

"No way, dude." Diego shook his head. "We went back for you, but you weren't there."

"I was unconscious." Clay snapped.

"No, you were gone." The football player spoke. "I don't know what you think you're up to, but we know shit now."

Clay made eye contact with Winston. "You." He spoke, passing Diego. "Was it you? Are you working with them now?"

"I-" Winston furrowed his eyebrows. "Seriously, I don't know what you're talking about."

Jessica approached Clay, causing him to go off on her. "What about you? You knew Diego was going to fuck with me. You said so."

Officer Standall spoke up, cutting them off. "Hey, campfire's ready. Let's go."

When everyone sat down around the fire, Lainie stood up to speak. "The traditional question for the final campfire." She smiled before looking down at a piece of paper. "Um- The tradition question : 'How had this weekend changed you, and what memory will you take with you forever'?"

Winston raised his hand. "I'll start." Lainie passed him the shell. He let out a sigh before speaking. "It's great to finally be a part of the Liberty community, to see how folks really are." Elizabeth's eyes widened as she listened to him speak. "I din't know before, so... that's really great."

"Wonderful, WInston." Lainie spoke, sending him a small smile.

"Yeah." Zach scoffed. "Welcome to Liberty fucking High School."

Lainie let out an awkward chuckle. "Yeah, welcome. Okay." She looked at the group of kids in front of her. "Who's next?" She turned to her son, who was staring at the ground. "Clay Jensen, help me out here."

Elizabeth tensed as she watched her mother hand Clay the shell. Justin grabbed onto Elizabeth's hand. "How has this weekend changed me? How has this weekend changed us?" Clay spoke, looking down at the shell in his hands. "It hasn't. Because I know that my friend and I... We'll be friends for life. There will always be a bond between us that we can never break even if we wanted to."

"Can I go next?" Alex spoke after Clay finished. He stood up and took the shell from Clay. "I just wanted to say or to confess..." Elizabeth's eyes widened, burying her face in her boyfriend's jacket. "That I fucking hate camping." She let out a sigh after she heard what he said. Kids around the camp fire chuckled before Alex threw the shell onto the ground, shattering it. People applauded him as he sat down.
