5.0 The One With The Pep Rally

Post Death
Pre Death

Hannah Baker's two new best friends, Jessica Davis and Alex Standall started dating, so of course, Hannah went to Elizabeth Jensen to complain. "Do you think I'll ever be as pretty as Jessica?" Hannah questioned her friend, running a hand through her long curly hair.

"What?" Elizabeth scoffed.

"Yup, okay. Got it." Hannah nodded awkwardly, moving to lay on her back.

"No." Elizabeth shook her head, moving closer to Hannah. "Jessica may be pretty, but you're special."

"Oh, so special like retarded?"

"I didn't say retarded, and I don't think that word's very nice now is it."

"Whatever, I know I'll never be like her." Hannah sighed. That was not what Elizabeth believed at all. Hannah was beautiful and she was kind. Hannah was perfect to Elizabeth.

"You're beautiful, Han." Elizabeth as she took Hannah's hand in her own. "And whoever doesn't think that is a loser and needs to get their eyes checked."

"Thanks, Liza."

"Anytime, babe."

Elizabeth sat in the bleachers, watching her friend, Jessica Davis, fuck up the cheer routine. Everyone cheered as they ended, and Elizabeth cupped her hands around her mouth, screaming "Go Jess!" Elizabeth's eyes locked with Jessica's, and she smiled.

"Hey there, Liberty Tigers! It's been an exciting day at Liberty High!" The school's principal spoke over the microphone in the gym. "Our varsity basketball team is kicking off it's preseason today, which is the first step on the road to returning to state finals!" The audience cheered again. "By Liberty tradition, I'm happy to welcome to the podium the winner of this year's Captain's Award, to introduce the varsity squad." Elizabeth's eyes zoomed in on Bryce Walker, who was also sitting on the bleachers. She hated that boy with every part of her body. "Now, this season's winner is co captain of the football team and the baseball team, and was called an inspiration to his team, a friend to all, a tough mother-bleep, and a true born leader. I am delighted to bestow the Liberty High's Captain's Award on Bryce Walker."

Cheering from the audience commenced immediately, and Elizabeth just slowly and softly clapped. On his way up, Bryce, with a smug smile across his face, high fived the mascot and took his certificate. "Thank you. Thank you. Thank you." Bryce chuckled as he spoke into the microphone. "It's an honor, and I'm proud to be a Liberty student athlete. Go Tigers!" The crowd applauded, and Bryce raised his fist into the air before taking a small piece of paper out of his pocket.

"Now, this year's starting lineup." There was a drumroll from the entire crowd. "Willem Barclay!" A boy ran onto the court, followed by a cheerleader doing backflips. "Zach Dempsey!" Zach rushed onto the court, twirling as he entered. "Justin Foley." Elizabeth smiled as she screamed for her boyfriend. Her screaming faded as no one came out onto the court. She frowned as she took out her phone, frantically texting him.

Bryce simply continued his roll call. "Anders Anderson!"

After the pep rally, Elizabeth immediately went up to Bryce. Bryce always knew where Justin was. Justin trusted him. Elizabeth didn't understand, but it was the truth. "Do you know where he is? Why hasn't he been at school?"

"Calm down, psycho." Bryce chuckled, wrapping his arm around her. "He's been staying in my pool house since last night. You can come by and check on him later if you'd like."

Elizabeth pushed him away. "Okay, but only to see if he's alright."

Later that afternoon, Elizabeth's knuckles tapped against the pool house door. Because no one opened the door, Elizabeth continuously knocked on it, hoping to see Justin. After many tries, Justin finally opened the door. His eyes were bloodshot, he was hunched over, his hair way greasy; in other words, he looked disgusting.

"Babe, what happened?" Elizabeth threw her arms around him, pulling him into a hug. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." Justin nodded, burrowing his head into her neck. "I'm just happy to see you."

"Why weren't you at school?"

"Don't worry about." Justin pulled away from the hug and looked into her eyes.

"But I do worry about you. A lot."

"As long as I have you, babygirl, I am okay." Justin smiled before leaning in to kiss her. His arms wrapped around her waist as a grin formed across his lips. "You're the only good thing in my life right now." Justin smiled as he leaned his forehead against Elizabeth's. "Please, never forget that."

Elizabeth brought Justin's knuckles to her lips, kissing them. "I never would." Her smile faded before she spoke again. "But, you have to start going to school, okay?"

"Eliza, I have a lot of shit going on right now."

The girl nodded. "I know, but if you continue to skip school, you will just end up fucking up your future."

"My future's already shit." Justin scoffed.

"Don't say that" Elizabeth shook her head and cupped his face with her hands. "You are incredibly smart and could do amazing things if you actually applied yourself."

Justin looked down at the ground before nodding slowly. "I'll think about it." He looked back up at her. "But, only for you." He placed a kiss on Elizabeth's cheek.
