30.0 The One Where Bryce Is Missing

Post Death
Pre Death

'Zach, please don't worry about it. I'm sure everything will be okay tomorrow. Just please, go to bed.'

Elizabeth Jensen had been dreaming about the phone call she had received from Zach Dempsey after the homecoming game all weekend. She was the first person he wanted to talk to after almost beating Bryce Walker to death, but she just told him to not stress about it until the morning. This decision would haunt her for the next few weeks. She woke up the monday after the homecoming game to Justin Foley hovering over her, looking very concerned. He had been trying to wake her up for the past couple of minutes. "Babe, you okay?"

"What?" Elizabeth rubbed her eyes as Justin moved next to her on her bed.

"You were saying some weird shit in your sleep." Justin stated before placing a kiss on her shoulder. "Is that shit about Zach still bothering you?" Elizabeth nodded as she looked up at him. He had been with her when she received Zach's phone call. "It's fine. We haven't heard a thing about it since friday."

"That might not exactly be a good thing." Elizabeth shook her head.

Justin took his girlfriend's hands in his own and placed kisses on her knuckles. "We can't do anything about it now, okay? All we can do is live our normal life."

There was a knock at the door, and Elizabeth pushed Justin off of her bed. Clay Jensen entered his sister's room and laughed. "It was just me. You didn't have to yeet Justin all the way across the room." Clay glanced down at Justin, smiling. "Dude, you need to start sleeping in the shed with me because my parents are starting to realize where you've actually been sleeping." Elizabeth shrugged in response. "Eliza, you're the whole reason we were kicked out to the shed in the first place, so shut the fuck up."

"Don't talk about the shed like that, at least you have fucking privacy there." Elizabeth scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest.

"But not enough privacy." Justin sent a glare towards Clay.

Clay let out a chuckle. "That's the whole point, man."

The girl furrowed her eyebrows at her brother. "Is that why you came in here? To tell us to stop sleeping together?"

"Actually, Mom and Dad told me to come in here and say that."

"Fuck." Elizabeth groaned. "Now we've really been busted."

Elizabeth arrived at Liberty High School with Justin Foley. The two went separate ways, with Elizabeth going straight to her locker. She began to put books in her bag and felt someone's eyes on her. She turned to look around the hall and saw Zach Dempsey standing across the hall from her with his crutches. He gave her a nod, motioning towards the library. She nodded in response and finished placing her books in her bag before closing her locker door. Elizabeth made her way into the library and sat where Zach had chosen.

"Eliza, what are we going to tell people about what happened Friday night?"

"We aren't telling anyone." Elizabeth shook her head before looking to see if anyone could hear them. "Hopefully, it won't become a big deal."

"I nearly killed him." Zach placed his head in his hands.

"But you didn't, Zach." She grabbed onto one of his hands, making him look at her. "You were able to stop yourself."

Jessica Davis rushed into the library, stopping immediately at Zach and Elizabeth's table. She shoved her backpack into a chair and sat down in the one next to Elizabeth. "What do you want, Jess?" Zach rolled his eyes as he spoke.

"There's something you guys need to know. The cops took Clay." Elizabeth's eyes widened as she looked between her and Zach. "They perp-walked him out of school. Ani saw just now."

Ani Achola. She moved to their town right after the spring fling and immediately became friends with Clay, and everyone in their friend group grew to like her eventually. Elizabeth still was not sure about her, but she had no reason to dislike her.

"Shit." Zach sighed as he ran a hand through his hair before leaning forward to speak quietly. "Do you think they know about- uh- about Tyler?"

"How could they know." Elizabeth furrowed her eyebrows as she spoke.

"Did you tell anyone?" Jessica questioned Elizabeth.

"No." She shook her head.

"Are you fucking serious?" Zach scoffed.

"How about you, Zach?"

"No, of course I didn't tell them."

"Really? Because you've been pretty hostile to everyone lately." Jessica cocked an eyebrow.

"No, I've been pretty hostile to you lately." Zach spat at Jessica.

Elizabeth rested her hands on the table in front of her. "Guys, let's not fight right now." She looked between the two of them, and they nodded. "Now, the whole Tyler thing happened like, what? Seven months ago? Why would any of us say anything now?"

Jessica looked down at the table. "Why else would they want Clay?"

Zach shrugged. "How would we know?"

"Did something happen this weekend? What did you do after the homecoming game?"

Elizabeth's eyes snapped up to look at Zach, practically begging him not to say anything that could get him in any kind of trouble.

Zach motioned to his new crutches. "Not very damn much." As he spoke the bell rang for class, and Elizabeth rushed out of the library.

She made her way into her history class, and Ani Achola sat down right next to her. "Did you hear about Clay?"

"Yeah, Jess just told me." Elizabeth started as she wrote down the homework assignment into her notebook. He phone buzzed, showing a message from Justin, saying that he was going to the police station for Clay.

"Are you going to do anything about it? I mean, he is your brother."

"Justin's taking care of it."

"Shouldn't you be there, too?"

"It's fine. Justin's taking care of it."

"Alright, this morning we're going to start off by talking about King Henry VIII-"

Elizabeth Jensen sat on the bench behind Zach Dempsey. He had asked her to stay after school during the football practices so it would not be as boring with him not able to play anymore. She had also wanted to see Justin and ask him what happened. "Come on, Charlie. Hustle." Zach called out to his quarterback, Charlie St. George. He was a junior as was recently new to Liberty High School.

"Yeah, Charlie!" Elizabeth cupped her hands around her mouth, joking around. "Let's see that hustle!"

Zach looked back at Elizabeth, smiling. Then Charlie crossed in front of him, and he went back to being the stone-faced team captain. "You got beat on friday, bud."

"No, you got beat." Charlie chuckled as he started skipping past Zach. "I just sucked."

Justin Foley walked on to the field. He placed a kiss on top Elizabeth's head before beginning to tighten his protective gear. "Hey, baby." Elizabeth sent a cheesy smile to Justin, causing him to chuckle.

"You're late." Zach stated as Justin crossed in front of him. "You're with the DBs on the other end zone." Justin nodded, starting to walk to the end zone. "Where were you?" Zach questioned him, causing Justin to stop and turn around.

"You were with Clay, right?" Elizabeth asked, standing up and making her way to the two boys.

Justin shook his head. "I went to tell Tony." He glanced onto the football team, watching the other players. "Ani went to the station. She thought it would be best if we all just stayed away."

"We're absolutely fucked." Elizabeth scrunched up her nose.

"Not if he didn't say anything." Justin wrapped his arm around his girlfriend.

All of their phones began to buzz, and Elizabeth reached into her back pocket. She pulled out her phone and looked at the notification. Clay sent a text to their group chat saying that Bryce was missing. "Holy fuck." Elizabeth gasped before passing the phone to Justin.

Justin furrowed his eyebrows as he looked down at the phone. His eyes widened before showing the text to Zach. Elizabeth stared at Zach, trying to see his reaction, but he remained fairly calm.

"Foley, what the fuck?" Montgomery De La Cruz laughed as he trotted over to the group. "I know you and Eliza weren't screwing around because she's been here, so what's your excuse?"

"Hey, just-" Justin stared down at Elizabeth's phone again, trying to take it all in. "Just hold on, okay?"

Montgomery finally reached the group. "What's up? Did a Jeliza sex tape finally get leaked? I can't wait to watch it." Montgomery sent Elizabeth a wink, and Elizabeth felt herself throw up a little bit in her mouth.

"Shut the fuck up, Monty." Elizabeth rolled her eyes as Justin turned to Montgomery.

"Dude, Bryce-" Justin looked down at the ground before speaking again. "He's missing."

"So?"

"What do you mean by so?" Elizabeth scoffed.

"He'll be back, sweetheart. Don't worry." Montgomery shrugged. "His mom pays, like, zero attention." He pulled at his protective gear. "I'm sure he just got drunk after Homecoming and stayed somewhere."

Zach nodded, looking between Elizabeth and Montgomery. "Yeah, could be."

"Now, let's go, Foley." Montgomery playfully tapped on Justin's gear. "We're putting in a nickel package against East Cali." Montgomery ran off, leaving the trio staring at each other in disbelief.

Elizabeth sat at a table at Monet's with Justin and Clay the day after the spring fling incident with Tyler. "After you left, I went straight up to that punk kid Cyrus. I was sure he was the one who called." He looked up at Elizabeth, and she nodded for him to continue. "And I grabbed him and was about to go off on him, but then Zach ran up and was like, 'It was me. I called the cops. Tyler should go to jail.'" Justin looked down at his hands. "And so I told him that if Tyler goes to jail now then so does Tony and so does Clay, at least."

"That stopped him?" Clay questioned him.

Elizabeth shook her head. "What stopped him is that the cops stormed in, shut the music off, and started getting everyone on the group. I think he got scared."

"'Liza and I were by Zach, so I said, 'You get to decide now, if you take down Clay and Tony and probably me and Eliza with Tyler and probably fuck up the school even more, or if we get out of this." Justin continued on with his story.

Clay nodded as he looked down at his phone. "Well, everyone's coming. I'm buying." He stood up and walked towards the register.

Justin smiled at Elizabeth as he grabbed onto her hand from the other side of the table. "You know I love you, right?"

Elizabeth nodded. "I love you, too."

"Barf, y'all are gross." Jessica laughed as she sat down next to Elizabeth.

"You're just bitter because you're single, Jess." Justin chuckled as he spoke. "I think Eliza needs to set you up. Right, babe?"

"I mean, I don't really have anyone to set her up with." Elizabeth shrugged as she looked between the two of them. "I don't have many friends."

"You have friends!" Justin smiled as Elizabeth shook her head. "Well, you've got us."

"Yeah, so many friends." Jessica rolled her eyes as she nudged Elizabeth with her shoulder.

Everyone showed up at Monets, and Justin started to talk about everything once again. "We rolled his car into one of the parking places. We figured we could hide it with the other cars."

"But, the keys were still in it." Elizabeth finished for her boyfriend. "Which meant that Tyler wasn't planning on coming back to it."

"So, I drove it away." Clay nodded slowly as he spoke.

"Jesus." Cyrus sighed. "That's balls."

"It was fucking stupid." Zach shook his head, staring down at his hands. "Going out there like that, stranding in front of a gun like that, acting like a fucking hero or something."

Clay glared over at him. "You called the cops. I passed the cops on my way out. Think about that timing. If I hadn't done that, kids would be dead."

"We don't know that." Zach slammed his hands on the table. "All you did was give Tyler another chance."

"Exactly." Justin nodded.

"Another chance to do it again." Zach stated, making himself more clear. "What if no one stops him next time."

"There won't be a next time." Elizabeth answered for her brother. "We'll make sure of that."

"That's insane, 'Liza." Zach rolled his eyes, sitting back into his chair. "He needs serious help."

"We can get him help." Clay was trying very hard to convince Zach of his plan, but it was not working very well. "But if we tell anyone what he did, he'll be expelled at least, and probably in jail, and probably tried as an adult."

"He's in juvie until he's twenty-one, and then they send him to jail." Elizabeth continued on from what her brother was saying. "What happens to him then?"

"This is bullshit." Zach looked between everyone at the table. "I'm out."

"Zach-" Jessica started to speak, trying to convince him to stay.

"I won't tell, I won't say anything, but it's not my job to take care of that psychopath." Zach spoke in an angry tone before standing up and leaving them.
