28.0 The One Where They Pay Their Respects

A few months after the trial, Clay and Elizabeth sat in a church for Hannah's funeral. Clay had been asked to speak, but he had been continuously freaking out about it. Elizabeth was sad that Justin could not be there, because she knew how he would have wanted to be, but he was still in juvenile detention.

"One act does not define a life." The priest spoke. "We celebrate the richness of her life, even as the tragic circumstances of her death can not be forgotten."

Hannah's father stood up to speak. "It does my heart good to see so many of Hannah's friend's here today. Hannah had the biggest heart, which she so generously shared with all of us. So, please be kind to each other." He continued for a few minutes before Hannah's mother went up to the alter to speak.

"She dreamed of going to New York to become a writer." Hannah's mother smiled as she spoke, but her smile soon faded. "I'm not sure when that dream began to feel impossible to her." She stopped to wipe a tear from her cheek. "Hannah was my dream. And now, I get to dream for Hannah as well as for myself, and so do all of you. So, please, dream your dreams. Dream them for Hannah, and don't let anyone take them away from you. Don't ever let them go."

It was finally time for Clay to stand up and speak. Elizabeth patted him on the back as he stood up, and smiled at him. "You're gonna do great." He smiled back. "I love you, dude."

"I love you, Eliza."

Clay made his way to alter, and sighed before speaking. "Hannah Baker came into my life at the end of one summer, like a star that fell to Earth." Elizabeth chuckled softly at his words. "Like nothing I had ever seen. Like no one I had ever met." Clay looked down before speaking again. "She was funny, and smart, and moody, and- and maddening, and beautiful." He paused for a second, seeming to be staring at the door. "And I loved her. I loved her so much. And I ask her every day why she did what she did, but I get no answers. She took those with her when she went. Leaving me- all of us, angry, empty, confused." Clay began to tear up. "And I know that hurt won't ever go away, but there will come a day where I don't feel it every minute. The anger won't be so hot, and the other feelings will fade, and I'll be left with only love." Clay looked down at his hands. "A good friend once said to me 'I can love you and still let you go'. So, Hannah, I love you, and I let you go. I'm gonna miss you. And, I hope that wherever you go next, you feel peace, and you feel safe, in a way that you never did here. Wherever you go next, I hope that you know that I love you."

After Hannah's funeral had ended, everyone went to mone's. Elizabeth sat at a table with Zach. The two of them were eating coffee and talking. Zach's eyes widened as he seemed to see something behind Elizabeth's back. "What?" She furrowed her eyebrows. She looked behind her and saw Justin. She let out a giggle as she jumped from her chair and sprinted over to him, enveloping him in a hug. "I'm so happy that you're out."

Justin's arms wrapped around Elizabeth as he smiled. "I'm really happy I'm out, too."

Justin and Elizabeth went to sit at a table with Clay and their mother. "It's so nice that everyone came." Mrs. Jensen spoke as she looked around. She looked between the teenagers. "Maybe I should leave you guys alone to catch up? Maybe you have some things you need to talk about."

Clay smiled and nodded. "Yes, there are." Mrs. Jensen left the three alone at the table.

Justin leaned closer to the table. "What things?"

Clay decided to start. "So, uh, I think my mom explained to you how she got you released into emergency custody."

"Yeah, she explained it."

"The thing about that is that it is only temporary, and because you won't be eighteen for over a year, once that expires, you become a ward of the state." Clay began to explain to Justin.

"Yeah, the social worker told me about that." Justin nodded.

"Yeah, and there's only like two group homes in the area that you would be eligible for, and you couldn't finish school at liberty." Clay began to stutter at this point. "And- uh- so my parents- well- uh- me and- uh- my parents-"

"We wanted to see if you'd be alright with them adopting you." Elizabeth completely cut him off.

Justin broke into a laughing fit. "Wait, what?"

"Like, adopt you into our family." Elizabeth explained further.

"So, I'd be your brother?" Justin laughed. "That's a little weird, Eliza."

"Well, I mean, not exactly, but sort of?" Elizabeth frowned.

"So, why are you guys asking me and not them?" Justin questioned the Jensen twins.

"I mean, it was kind of our idea to be honest." Clay spoke.

"At first, I thought that it would be super weird." Elizabeth shook her head.

"And, they left it up to me, considering I was the person who brought you into their life in the first place." Clay clapped his hands as he spoke. Justin leaned back and began to cry. Clay furrowed his eyebrows. "Are you crying?"

Justin nodded. "You know I'm like really fucked up, right?"

Elizabeth grabbed onto his hand as Clay answered him. "Well, A, yes, but you're clean and going to meetings. And, B, I'm also fucked up in certain ways."

"We all are." Elizabeth smiled at him.

Justin looked down, smiling, before shaking his head. "Okay, yeah. I'd like to be adopted, yeah."

Elizabeth sat on her bed, doing her algebra homework, when the door of her room opened to show Justin. "Hey, Justin." She smiled as he walked into her room. "What's up?"

He sat down next to her. "So, the spring fling." He leaned closer towards her.

Elizabeth laughed as she pushed him away. "You know the only reason I went that one time was because of you."

"Yeah, and now you can go again with me." Justin smiled as he kissed Elizabeth's cheek.

"Don't you feel weird about going after everything that's happened?"

"What do you mean?"

Elizabeth sighed, biting the inside of her lip. "Well, so many people have been hurt this year, and now we're going to go and celebrate?" Elizabeth shook her head. "I'm probably just overthinking it." She looked at him. "Maybe going would be a good change."

He chuckled as he grabbed onto her hands. "And, would you wanna go as my date?"

"I wouldn't want it any other way."

The two smiled at each other before Justin leaned in and kissed her. Elizabeth kissed him back, wrapping her arms around his neck. He lightly pushed her backwards, and she felt her back hit her bed. She giggled as she kissed him. Justin moved his lips down to her neck, and then back up a little to her ear. "God, I've missed you, baby." He whispered before biting her ear softly. He attached his lips to hers again, and his hands were on her waist. Elizabeth's legs wrapped around his body, trying to be as close to him as possible.

"Oh my god." Justin practically leaped away from Elizabeth as they looked to see Clay standing in the doorway.

"Clay, why can't you ever knock?" Elizabeth laughed as she wiped the saliva from her lips.

"You guys have got to be able to keep it in your pants."

"I'm sorry, dude." Justin chuckled as he stood up, going to pat Clay on the shoulders. "Your sister's hot. Way hotter than you."
