22 - Who We Long to Be
A new day meant new beginnings. New beginnings meant a fresh start. A fresh start meant that Chase would have his chance to do what was right. The night prior, he kept waking up from his sleep periodically, mainly because he was planning out everything in his head, like what he would say. Within hours, he made up several scenarios of possibilities of how Marshall would react.
Some reactions were not too bad, while others were . . . hostile. One was even violent. And by violent, he meant full-out fighting to the point where one of them got hurt. It wasn't reality at all, but all Chase hoped for was that things wouldn't turn out that way.
He could only shake his head with distress.
He had come to realize that if he never said those harsh words to Marshall the day they broke up, he wouldn't have to do this. In fact, he'd probably be doing something fun with Marshall. At that moment, that was all in his head. He couldn't live that craved reality. He could only dream on.
Chase rode the elevator up to the mission control room, the heart of the Lookout Tower. The disruptive noises of the elevator's engine ramming rung his ears, his heart slowly beginning to drop. He knew that the Dalmatian was somewhere in there, considering that he didn't go out on a special mission or such.
But from what he heard, that said otherwise.
Before the elevator could let him out, on the mission board, Everest was plastered across the screen. The two were talking and Marshall could be heard concluding things.
"I'm going to help Farmer Yumi out with her tomatoes now, but I'll call you back later," Marshall chirped.
Everest nodded before ending the call. That's when Chase made his departure from the elevator, causing Marshall's head to swing towards him in surprise.
"What are you doing here?" He frowned.
"There's really something I need to tell you about, Marshall. I'm serious," the German Shepherd pleaded desperately.
"Fine," Marshall huffed as he rearranged himself on a pillow. "Make it quick because I have to get to the farm soon. At least in a few hours, maybe."
"Alright," Chase nodded, joyful to know that the Dalmatian was at least giving him a chance to speak. "Marshall, I know I've said some extremely hurtful things to you. I truly wish I could take it all back — I mean it. I should've considered how you felt. I still can't believe I ended our friendship over something so . . . stupid."
"Okay, and?" the Dalmatian raised an eyebrow, not convinced of anything.
"And really, I feel extremely bad for everything. Us not getting along has gotten in the way of how the team performs. Things just haven't been the same," Chase reasoned.
Marshall just swept his paw on the floor, then began to mock. "I can't hear you; I can't hear you."
"I know I broke your trust. I know I did," the German Shepherd continued. "But is there anything I can do to help rebuild it? Anything?"
The Dalmatian shrugged in response.
"I miss us. I miss all the fun times we used to have, even if it required us getting dirty or whatever. It was all fun times — times that I can't get back, but I want to make more fun memories with you, Marshall, I really do," Chase stumbled on his words as his eyes began to itch. It really was affecting him to his heart.
He watched the Dalmatian get up from his pillow, a frown on his face. He stood directly in front of the Shepherd, paw to paw and eye to eye. He held up his paw, almost swiping it over Chase's face, but all of a sudden, he put it down. He felt anger boil throughout his veins, resulting in allowing himself to let it drive his actions. As a grand result, he felt his paw sweep itself against Chase's face. The Shepherd yanked his head back in response, baffled, but he didn't fight back.
Instead, he stood there, feeling the light pain on his cheek gradually fade away. "Why did you do that?" He questioned.
"Because, what if you're lying?" Marshall demanded. "You probably are."
"How would you know?" Chase countered with a raised eyebrow. "I'm very much serious, you know. I actually want to make things right. I know that you think of me as a stranger now, and you don't have to take me back as your best friend and brother, but at least forgive me. I'm begging you, Marshall."
The Dalmatian sighed heavily, having trouble differentiating if he was serious or acting. Deep down, he also missed the history they had together. Everything didn't feel the same since they dropped everything. The walls of their friendship may have tumbled down, but it didn't feel right to keep them that way. Even if what Chase did hurt, Marshall couldn't help but think about the many memories they made together. That's what made him feel bad.
But deep down, he couldn't let that control everything.
"You know, I'm willing to start things over with you," Marshall said, which caused Chase's eyes to light up. "But wait, it won't be easy. What you said to me was unbelievable, and we can't just continue where we left off. I think a fresh start for both of us will be a change for the better."
Marshall took a deep breath, then continued. "Obviously, I haven't forgiven you fully just yet, and that will take time, but like I said, I'm willing to start brand new. It'll take lots of time for me to build that same trust we used to have with you, but in for it a hundred percent."
"Thank you, Marshall. Thank you so much for this," Chase pleaded with appreciation.
"In that case, hi, I'm Marshall. What's your name?" The Dalmatian giggled.
"Hi, Marshall, I'm Chase," the German Shepherd played along accordingly.
That's where Marshall pulled Chase in for a hug. A strong, brotherly hug that they hadn't had in a while. Marshall patted on the Shepherd's back, then whispered, "I missed you a lot."
"I missed you too, buddy," the Shepherd whispered back.
The ding of the elevator rung both of their ears, but they didn't bother to look back. Ryder was there, an eyebrow raised while his hands were planted on his hips.
"What a surprise," the boy said with a genuine smile. "Did you two make up?"
"Something like that. We're working on it," the Dalmatian answered. Chase nodded in agreement.
"That's amazing," Ryder said while reaching down to pat on both of their heads. "I'm proud of you two for finding a way to work things out. I truly am."
That's when the hug was let go of for the sake of their breathing. It was a tight hug, so it made it a bit difficult for them both to breathe, but they found a way. They always did.
It wasn't for no reason. It was because deep down, they were always brothers. Maybe they weren't brothers by blood, but since they first started talking to each other, that's how things turned out. When they were broken up, they may have not been best friends anymore, but deep down, they were still brothers without realizing it. They were still family, and family is forever, no matter what circumstances got in the way.
That was just how life was.
"So," Marshall cleared his throat, then smirked. "My Chase is dating Skye now."
"And you're dating Everest," the Shepherd teased in a high-pitched tone.
"There's a lot we need to catch each other up on," Marshall nudged his brother.
Chase nodded his head while using his paw to wipe the corner of his eyes. Today would easily be an unforgettable day for them both. They day where everything changed for the better.
"Thanks again for anything," the Shepherd acknowledged.
"Anything for my brother," Marshall hummed. "Anything."

A/N: PLEASE READ
And that's a wrap! Can you all believe that this story is over? Cause honestly, I can't. For those who've been reading this story from the very first time I uploaded it back in 2020, you'd probably know that the process of writing this story has been rough for me. I can't exactly say that writing this story was pure enjoyment, but it was a beautiful process.
Now, you may be wondering what's next for me and my stories. First and foremost, I will make this clear: I will not be writing any more PAW Patrol stories. I've lost interested in the fandom and show as a whole, and I don't vision myself continuing with fanfics about it. Instead, I will be continuing with my original story, Behind the Books, and after that, I will start a brand-new original story, That's My Spotlight, which is basically a enemies to lovers high school story that has choir setting. It hasn't been published on my profile just yet, but if you decide to check it out once it's released, I highly appreciate it.
Thank you all so much for reading this story and making it to the end. I will begin the editing process eventually, but I'm still trying to figure out when. Again, thank you so much!
