04 - Best Friends ForNever

Third Person POV:

It had only been a few rough days later. Rough for only Chase and Marshall. They haven't been speaking to each other. Rather than just ignoring each other through all of their might.

Nobody had noticed their new behavior just yet. Everyone's too busy with their own lives and missions to even notice. After all, it was only Chase and Marshall's situation and they didn't really want to get nobody else tangled into the dramatic situation.

"I'm tired of holding it all in. Those walls... They're plunging down." Chase muttered to himself while laying down in his pup house miserably.

* * * * *

"Something is wrong... But what is it?" Marshall thought to himself in his pup house, "I don't want to believe that something is wrong... But I know at the bottom of my heart that there is something that's incorrect. But what is it? It just can't be! The walls can't tumble down that quickly. It's... The promise. Our promise! Only Chase and I's agreement."

"And when those walls finish dropping down, what will it mean in our friendship? Marshall and I?" the German Shepherd pondered a very complex question.

Maybe an unsolvable one.

"Those walls... Marshall and I built. They aren't literal walls. Those walls are inside. The walls are... Friendship." Chase glanced down to the ground, "Wait—"

A bright red ball landed onto Chase's head, interrupting the important thoughts.

"I'm sorry, Chase! The ball accidentally has gotten here when it wasn't meant to be. We were just playing around." Rubble apologized as he picked up the ball.

"It's okay, Rubble." Chase looks up to the Bulldog pup, hiding his emotions.

"Is something wrong, Chase? You look like you've been thinking too hard." Rubble observed the faint look on Chase's face.

"I'm fine, Rubble. There's no need to worry about me. I feel exceptional. I've just been contemplating a few things." Chase plastered a slight and fake smile on his face.

"Okay, if you say so." Rubble walked away with the bright red ball.

Chase spontaneously frowned as soon as Rubble was gone. Something is wrong, but he just couldn't get Rubble to be worried about him. Rubble was just like a little brother to Chase.

"I need to talk to Chase. This has gone too far." Marshall stood up as he walked out of his pup house to Chase's.

Chase, however just stood there in complete secrecy.

"Chase! I need to talk to you!"

"Huh? Oh... Hi, Marshall. What's wrong?" Chase looked up at Marshall, startled.

"We need to talk about an important topic. Alone." Marshall breathed heavily.

"Okay, what did you want to talk about?" Chase asked, possibly knowing what it was.

"Our friendship. The walls that we built through the time frame of this friendship isn't that strong anymore. The walls are falling down and breaking into pieces. That's what I feel on the inside." Marshall kept his eyes glued to the solid ground.

"I thought I was the only one who thought that about you and me. But it turns out that we were both thinking along the same lines. The walls are progressing downward instead of upward. And somebody is responsible for it." Chase closed his eyes.

"Wait a second. Are you blaming this on me?" Marshall got caught off guard.

"I never said it was your fault, but pretty much, yeah. Let's be real, Marshall. I'd hate to say this, but things aren't the same anymore. I feel it... And I know you do, too. I feel horrible, because of you." Chase spilled all of the disastrous emotions out.

The Dalmatian frowned, angrily. "How do I make you feel horrible?!"

"You should know this already, Marshall. You always mess everything up! And I'm in the same picture as you because we're best friends! It makes me look bad!"

"Did you forget that I'm a Dalmatian? We're clumsy! Deal with the facts!" Marshall defended himself with an enraged look as he stepped forward.

That's when he tripped on a nearby chew toy by accident.

"Sorry, it was an accident. Clumsy me." Marshall looked far down into the dark-colored pavement. A little too far.

"Sorry is all you say, Marshall. You never do anything right!" Chase growled.

"So? It was an accident, nothing more. I didn't do it on purpose! And since you say that 'I'm too clumsy', then you're too serious. You're a very bossy know-it-all who loves bossing everyone around. You deserve to know that!" Marshall grumbled.

"It's my job! And I am not a bossy know-it-all! You're the real one!" Chase yelled through anger.

"Who cares about what you have to say to me? You, obviously. Did you forget about our promise? It was only between you and me when we met. The promise that we'd stay brothers forever. The promise that we'd be best friends endlessly no matter what occurred in life." Marshall spoke madly with a glare.

"Hi, Marshall. How are you doing today?" Chase asked the Dalmatian pup.

"I'm doing fine, Chase. I'm just thinking. And adjusting to my brand new home." Marshall responded while looking up into the sky.

There wasn't a single cloud up there. The sky was perfectly blue.

"You know... I have an idea. Both of us can become best friends. I think it'll be cool." Chase suggested.

"That's a great idea, Chase!  I never had a best friend before. It'll be fun." Marshall smiled like never before.

"I never had a best friend before, either. This is the first time for both of us. We'll have to make a promise to be best friends—and even brothers forever. Like, a pledge." Chase wagged his tail happily.

"Both of us will be best friends forever. No matter what comes through."

"And brothers and never break apart. We'll keep building on our friendship every day and never, ever have a broken heart. Deal?" Marshall held out his paw.

"Deal, Marshall." Chase met his paw with Marshall's, "We're officially brothers. Permanently."

"The promise... It's... Broken!" a few tears went through Marshall's eyes thinking about the great moment that once happened. One of the best moments in his life.

"It is, Marshall. After all of this friendship, it's gone for good. We aren't... Best friends anymore." Chase sighed.

"Can't we just fix our problems instead of breaking apart? We're brothers! Remember?" Marshall tried to hold in the tears.

It wasn't working.

"We can't, Marshall. I just don't feel anything through this anymore. I'm tired of drawing inside those lines. What I mean is, we aren't best friends anymore. You know that. We aren't even friends." Chase looked away.

"If you say so, Chase. It was nice being best friends with you. Those memories that we had together... They're gone now. And it's all your fault! I can't believe I'm saying this, but I hate you!" Marshall ran away from Chase.

"It isn't my fault. It's your fault."

Marshall locked himself into his pup house the second he got in. Upset, hurt, and regretful.

"We aren't best friends anymore. Not even friends. Instead of being best friends forever, we're best friends fornever!" Marshall panicked, "And it's all his fault!"

He looked to the right of his pup house. It was filled with pictures. Relevant and very significant pictures. Mostly of just Chase and him. Together and happy with each other. But now, that wasn't the case.

Marshall tore down the pictures that had Chase in them. Chase isn't important to him anymore.

"It's time for me to move on." Marshall sniffed, taking down the last picture of Chase.

"Marshall?" Zuma asked Marshall, peeking inside of his pup house.

He is with Rocky. The two are wondering if Marshall wants to play.

"Where did you two come from?" Marshall asked in confusion.

"We're wondering if you want to play." Rocky smiled, enthusiastically.

"Sure, I'll right there in just a moment," Marshall spoke up.

Zuma and Rocky then went away. This

"I'll do anything to get my mind off of Chase and our so-called friendship. He's the one who caused this." Marshall scowled at what just occurred.

He is too busy thinking about it that he bumped into a tree.

"Where did this tree come from?" Marshall rubbed his head with one of his paws.

"You bumped into it, Marshall."

"Where's Chase? Isn't he going to play with us?" Skye asked.

"Oh... He's in his pup house. Let's just play without him." Marshall quickly thought of it.

He didn't want his ex-best friend to even be near him. That's how mad the Dalmatian was. Marshall was usually a happy pup, but today was a bad day. For him, it was like there was a rain cloud over his head following him wherever he went.

"How come you look upset, Marshall?"

"Oh, it's nothing. I'm not upset. See?" Marshall plastered a fake smile across his face.

All the pups eyed Marshall in a strange way but decided to believe him anyway.

Ryder, of course, had no clue what had happened between Chase and Marshall. He didn't even know that the two pups had gotten into an argument. He always thought they would never stop being friends. And that's what everybody thought. But they were wrong.
