Chapter 26: Jalene Returns (Oh Boi)

As soon as Daveed and I entered our house, Rafa dashed up to us and was all smiles. "So? How'd it go? What'd she say?" The questions were directed at Daveed, but despite that, Rafa's eyes kept glancing between us two. He obviously knew about what Daveed had planned. And why wouldn't he? He was Daveed's best friend, after all.

I smiled and showed Rafa my brand new ring, the band that proudly showed that I was committed to a relationship and that I would be getting married. "I said yes."

Rafa gasped. "Yes! I was so hoping you guys would get married! You're so cute together! Diggs and Jalene didn't look half this cute when him and her were together!"

Jalene was kinda a touchy subject for Daveed and I, so we both fidgeted uncomfortably.

"Ah, touchy subject," Rafa said, obviously realizing his mistake. "I forgot. Sorry."

Rafa had (still has) a bad habit of saying whatever was on his mind, even if it was hurtful or just plain uncomfortable to hear him say. But Rafa's flaws made him human, and I'd rather him be human than perfect. Perfect scares me to this day.

"It's fine," Daveed reassured, waving Rafa off. "For the record..," he paused awkwardly before saying, "I agree with you."

I rolled my eyes, my face heating up slightly. "I do too..."

Rafa smiled at how in love Daveed and I were. "Well, I should probably leave. And Sadie's in the nursery, by the way. The formula I gave her made her very sleepy."

"Okay. Thanks for watching her," Daveed said with a smile.

"No problem, you two!" Rafa responded, smiling. "So I'll see you guys tomorrow, right?"

I squinted my eyes, trying to remember what me and Daveed were doing with Rafa the next day.

Daveed had a similar confused expression on his face, so Rafa sighed in annoyance. "We're doing 'Blindspotting' stuff. Writing more, making some decisions about the cast..? Any of this ring a bell..?"

Realization hit me and Daveed like a hammer hits a nail. "Oooooh," we both said at the same time. How could we have forgotten?

"Yeah, we'll see you tomorrow," I said with a smile. Rafa had previously said I could help with the cast, so I was excited to start making those decisions.

Rafa smiled and grabbed the doorknob, prepared to open the door and leave. But then...

There was a knock on the door.

Rafa turned to Daveed and I and raised an eyebrow, his hand still on the doorknob. "Are you guys expecting any visitors today?"

We both shook our heads. "No..," I said, wondering who was at my door.

"Hmm," Rafa said. "Since my hand is literally on the door already, I'll get it."

And with that, Rafa pulled open the door, and everyone in the room literally stumbled backwards at who was at the door.

I regained my balance first, swallowing nervously. "...Hey....Jalene..."

Exactly who I wanted to see. Please note my sarcasm.

Jalene's eyes narrowed a bit when she saw me. "Oh. (Y/N)."

I honestly had expected a worse reaction, so I was pleasantly surprised with how she greeted me.

Rafa and Jalene were still chill, since he had nothing to do with my and Daveed's scandal. "Oh, hey, Jay. What brings you here?"

Daveed slowly began to slide into the kitchen, me following him. I did not wanna have an awkward conversation with his ex.

"Well," Jalene said loudly, causing Daveed and I to stop sliding and look over at her, "I came to talk to Daveed and (Y/N)."

Rafa then tried his best to prevent Jalene from talking to us. "Well, you're not really the person that they wanna see right n—"

Jalene ignored Rafa and shoved right past him, stepping into our house uninvited. She crossed her arms, looking at Daveed. "So, your Clipping fans have posted really interesting things on Instagram."

Daveed and I both tensed. That was one thing we hadn't considered would happen, which is kinda stupid, since people can never keep their mouth shut.

I decided to play dumb. Don't know why, considering Jalene had already seen enough to make her believe that me and Daveed were, in fact, engaged. I hid my hands behind my back, not willing to expose my ring as I said, "Oh? What'd they post?"

I'm still surprised that my voice didn't waver at all. You should've heard me when I had to present projects back in elementary school. My voice shook so much.

Jalene's gaze shifted to me, and I swear she was Medusa in that moment, for her gaze practically turned me into stone. "Lemme see your hand, then, (Y/N)."

Yikes. Her voice was just as hard as her stare.

I glanced at Daveed wearily, ready to give in.

But my fiancé gave me a look that said "keep playing dumb".

I sighed inwardly, for Daveed's stare could make anyone do anything he wanted.

I looked at Jalene, an eyebrow raised. "Why?"

Jalene rolled her eyes and said, "Cut the shit. Lemme see."

Without giving me a chance to respond, she yanked the hand that had the engagement ring on it from behind my back, studying it with a satisfied smirk on her face. "Hmm...I wonder what this ring is for."

I tried to pull my hand away, but Jalene's grip was solid. She looked at Daveed, saying in a kind of pissed off tone, "So your fans weren't lying. You two are engaged."

Daveed stared at the ground, not wanting to see the fire in Jalene's eyes that I could see. "Yeah..," he mumbled quietly, his voice squeaky and nervous.

Jalene let go of my hand, went up to her ex, and whispered in a heartbroken yet menacing way, "We were dating for years. Four, at the very least. And then you go and propose to this bitch after one?!"

Daveed sighed and finally gathered the strength to look Jalene in the eye. "Jalene, we've talked about this. I didn't propose to you because I didn't love you enough. I was waiting for myself to get attached to you."

"What was wrong with me, huh, Daveed?" Jalene asked, her voice wavering. "I'm way hotter than (Y/N), for one. And I also have way better qualities than her!"

Daveed smiled awkwardly. "Uh...don't get me wrong...you're great...but...I love (Y/N)..."

Jalene huffed. "You shouldn't."

"Wait...you haven't moved on from Daveed?" I asked. I was a bit surprised that she seemed to love Daveed still, since it had been a year and however months.

Jalene shook her head. "No! He was the love of my life, and you stole him from me!"

I suddenly began to feel really bad for Jalene, despite her mean phrasing.

I was actually about to apologize, but Rafa cut me off.

"Listen, you turtle, you need to chill out. (Y/N) didn't take Daveed away from you. They didn't get together to hurt you. People in love wanna be together, and Daveed and (Y/N) loved each other." Rafa then added, "You should get with Luca. You guys would be cute together."

Jalene sighed, trying not to let her defenses fall at Rafa's good points. "I...I..." She gulped. "I just really miss Daveed...I don't think you're a bad person, (Y/N). I still love you like family. It just...really hurt to be dumped by the man I loved most..."

I smiled softly, realizing how Jalene was just depressed and sad. She wasn't a bad person either.

I rested a hand on her shoulder. "Jalene, you'll move on with time. It may take a long while, but it will happen. And I actually agree with Rafa about you and Luca." I smiled. "You guys would make a bomb ass couple."

Jalene smiled through her sadness. "You really think I'll move on..?"

   I nodded. "I really do."

Jalene sighed. "Can we all be friends again? I miss the company of you guys..."

   "Of course!" I said.

Jalene smiled back. "Thank you...I should be leaving now..."

I decided not to tell Jalene about Sadie just yet. She probably wouldn't wanna hear about the love of her life giving himself up to another woman. She was too fragile. "Okay," I said. "Come over whenever you want."

Daveed and Rafa nodded in agreement.

Jalene walked towards the door and turned back to face Rafa, Daveed, and I. "I will. Bye, guys." She flashed us one last smile before exiting our house.

Right as she left, Sadie began to make gurgling noises from her nursery. Thank God she held off on those until Jalene left.

I looked at Daveed and smiled. "Looks like your ex is a pretty nice person."

Daveed smiled back. "That she is. Though, she's nothing compared to you."

The three of us then went to retrieve Sadie, happy that we were now friends with Jalene.
