Chapter 20: Saved By The Rafa

Frazzled, I set Sadie down in her crib for the third time that night. Her hysterical crying had weakened into tiny sobs, but I couldn't do anything to calm her all the way down.

Daveed and I hadn't gotten a descent night's sleep in about two weeks. Remember how I said Sadie didn't cry much? Well, that wasn't true when it was past 10:30 at night. That seemed to be all she did.

Daveed was standing beside me, bags underneath his normally sparkly eyes. He kept trying to whisper soothing words to his child, but Sadie was either deaf or she just didn't feel like listening. Probably the latter.

Daveed sighed, giving up. "Now I remember why we were afraid to have a baby," he mumbled to himself.

Normally, I would kill him for saying something like that. I would normally say that having Sadie was the best thing that had ever happened to us. But on that particular night, I agreed with him. "Me too," I said, sighing.

Sadie finally stopped crying althogether, her teary eyes closing.

I sighed with relief, turning around to go back to our room, when Daveed grabbed my wrist.

I turned around, and he said, "There's really no point in going back to our room. You know she's just gonna keep crying."

I looked at the (for now) sleeping Sadie, and nodded. "Yeah, you're right. But we need sleep. We haven't slept in...how long now..?"

"We might as well sleep in here," Daveed said. "It'll be slightly more convenient for us."

I nodded. "I'll get some pillows."

"Wait," Daveed said, making me turn around. "In case we don't make it out of this alive, I love you."

I rolled my eyes, a dry laugh escaping me. "I love you too." I then went to our room and grabbed a bunch of pillows.

My phone then rang from the nightstand. I sighed quietly, not in the mood to deal with telemarketers.

Not even checking the number or contact name, I answered it. "What?!" I snapped at the poor person/robot on the other line.

"Hey, (Y/N)," I heard Rafa say.

I immediately felt bad for snapping at my dear friend. "Oh! I-I'm sorry, Rafa! I thought you were a telemarketer or something, and Sadie just won't stop crying..."

Not bothering to ask why I thought he was a telemarketer (what a good friend), Rafa said, "No, no! It's fine! Don't worry about it!"

"So, why are you calling me at--" I paused to check the time on the alarm clock that was sitting on the nightstand, "--3:00 in the morning?"

"I was script writing. And, as you can see, I lost track of time," Rafa said with a small chuckle. "And I realized that I need Diggs to look over a certain part."

"At 3:00 in the morning?" I said with a sigh.

"I thought--I dunno! I thought maybe he would be up! And it's not like I'm asking if I can come over right now! I just wanted to make plans!"

"Again, aT 3:00 iN tHe MoRnInG?!" I screeched quietly.

"Shut the hell up," Rafa scoffed. "I don't know why I called so early, okay? Can you just ask Daveed when he's available?"

"Why didn't you just call him if you needed to make plans?" I asked, overwhelmed by Rafa's stupidity.

"I don't know, okay?!" Rafa sighed. "Just ask him!"

I sighed. "Fine. I'll do you a solid. Just give me a sec to ask him."

I ignored Rafa's "thank you" as I went to Sadie's room where Daveed was sitting, my phone still in my hand.

Daveed smiled when he saw me. "You're back!" He then looked confused. "Where are the pillows?"

"I didn't get them. Rafa interrupted the pillow-getting-process by calling me. He was wondering when you're available, since he needs you to go over a part of his script for 'Blindspotting'."

Daveed looked even more confused. "Why'd he call you then?"

I shrugged. "Who knows? It's Rafa."

Daveed nodded. "True. Tell him that he can come over now, since..," his voice dropped to a whisper, "we need help with Sadie too. We can trick him into helping us with her while I go over the part of the script he wants me to look over."

I thought about that for a few seconds. Then, a smile spread across my face. "Babe! You're a genius!"

Daveed blushed. "Ah...I can't argue with that..."

I rolled my eyes, getting back on the phone with Rafa. "Daveed says you can come over now. He says he needs a way to distract himself from being a father," I said, winking at Daveed.

   Daveed returned the wink.

"Okay! I'll see you two in a bit!" Rafa said. He had no idea he was about to end up helping us with a soon-to-be crying child.

"See ya!" I said, hanging up. Daveed and I looked at each other mischievously and rubbed our hands together.

About ten minutes later, Rafa knocked on the door.

I looked at Daveed, nodded, and began to walk to the door to let Rafa in. As soon as I left the room, I heard the annoying sound that was Sadie crying.

Perfect timing, Sadie. I owe you one.

I put on a fake stressed expression (well, I was stressed, but I normally don't show it; it's just something that never finds its way to my features), and opened the door.

Rafa was standing there (obviously), so I began my plan to get him to handle Sadie for a while.

I was gonna start by saying how stressed I was and how Sadie was being such a pain, then act even more stressed and say how I wasn't sure I could do this much longer once Daveed went into our room to go over the script (he needed somewhat quiet). Then, boom! Rafa would be helping me with my child.

"Oh...hey, Rafa..," I said quietly, running a hand through my knotted hair.

Rafa smiled. "Hey, (Y/N)!" The smile he had on before faded. "Are you okay? You look...not...good..."

I sighed. "I know...Sadie is just...making me so stressed..." That wasn't technically a lie. "I can't take her..." That was a lie. But, ya gotta do what ya gotta do to get your friend to take care of your baby. "She's such a pain..." Meh. Sort of a lie.

Rafa's eyes softened. "Oh, I'm sorry, (Y/N)." He looked around. "So, where's Diggs?"

"In the nursery," I mumbled pathetically, pointing in the general direction of the nursery.

Rafa nodded as I began to lead him to said nursery.

After about five seconds, we were there.

"There he is," I said quietly, gesturing to Daveed, who also had a pathetic expression on his face.

He was a good actor. Still is.

"Hey, Diggs," Rafa said with a wave. "You don't look too good either."

And as soon as Rafa uttered those words, Sadie startrd crying.

   Perfect timing, Sadie. Good job.

Daveed let out a sigh, went over to Sadie's crib, picked her up, and began rocking her. "Yeah...just...a little stressed, is all...this baby just doesn't know how to shut up..."

Rafa wore a sympathetic expression. "Sorry Sadie has been such a bitch to you guys." I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. "But anyway," Rafa fished in his pockets for his phone. Once he got it, he handed it to Daveed. "You should read Act two, scene fourteen. I'm wondering if I wrote it good enough."

Daveed nodded, looked at me, nodded again (only more subtly), and handed Sadie to me, who was still crying. "Mind watching her for me, dear? I need some quiet to read this over."

"No, not at all..," I said quietly.

Daveed then walked to our room.

Time for me to use my Maria Reynolds persuasion. Only without the affair.

I sighed as Sadie kept crying, only louder. I held her close to my chest, patting her back. That didn't seem to do much, though. "Shh...shh..," I said quietly to my obnoxious child. I laid her down to change her diaper for the third time, grabbing the package of them that was under her crib. I then began to change Sadie, even though I saw that her diaper didn't need changing. "Oh, you're such a drama queen..," I mumbled to Sadie, who was still crying.

Rafa said, "You know, I could watch her while you get some much-needed rest and while Diggs reads the script. He could even get some rest, too. I just wanna help."

Wow. That hardly took any persuasion.

I smiled wearily. "You'd really do that for us?"

Rafa nodded. "Of course!" He held out his hands, indicating that I should place her in his hands.

I gladly did so. "Thanks again, Rafa." I then went into my and Daveed's room and laid in bed next to him.

He was correcting a grammar mistake on Rafa's script. He looked over at me with a smirk. "Did your plan work?"

"Like a charm," I said. "I hardly had to do any persuading."

"And....done!" Daveed said, turning off Rafa's phone. He then placed it on our nightstand, wrapped his arms around me, and smiled. "So now we get some alone time~"

"That I'm gonna use to sleep," I chuckled, wrapping my arms around Daveed also.

"Ditto," Daveed said, yawning. "Goodnight, darling."

   "Goodnight, Daveed."

And with that, we both got some much-needed rest.

   Thanks, Rafa.
