Chapter 18: Visitors
It had been a few hours since Sadie had been delivered, and I was holding her (she was all cleaned up, don't worry) in my arms while watching "Supernatural", to Daveed's dismay; he hated that show. "I'm sore! I was put through a lot, okay?" I had said, which swayed him to put it on.
I shifted positions, trying to get comfortable. Hospital beds are awful. Hospitals just really wanna give everyone unfortunate enough to lay in their beds a backache.
I watched Dean scream fearfully at a cat that was inside a locker, making me chuckle and Daveed roll his eyes.
"That was scary!" Dean said breathlessly. Sam responded by walking away.
"What a wimp," Daveed grumbled. "It's just a cat, dude."
"Oh, shut up," I said, stroking Sadie's hair. "Dean is manlier than you."
"Have I ever screamed at a cat?" Daveed asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No. But you did scream when you saw a squirrel sprint across the road we were walking down," I stated. "Which isn't that much better."
Daveed looked down, embarrassed. "Ah...that was...a while ago..."
"I guess you're right," I said with a smirk. "You know what wasn't a while ago, though?"
"I'm scared," Daveed said.
"When I caught you watching 'The Backyardigans' on Netflix."
Daveed turned beet red. "Uh...I...that was...I didn't..."
"Don't deny it. I saw you, Dav."
Daveed crossed his incredibly muscular arms and looked away. "You were hallucinating..," he growled.
"Uh-huh," I said sarcastically, my gaze moving to my offspring.
She really did look like her father. I stared into her eyes, that being the only similarity we shared.
She gazed at me also, an adorable smile crossing her face. She made this cute giggling noise, making Daveed look over with a soft expression.
Daveed and I just stared at our child lovingly. I forgot how sore I was and how much pain I had to go through. It was all worth it when I got to hold Sadie.
My gazing session was interrupted by Rafa, Reneè, Oak, Anthony, Lin, and Jasmine Cephas-Jones (those were all "Hamilton" cast members I was close with) all bursting into my room at once. (All of them had already known about the arrival of Sadie, since I had told them shortly after I had told Reneè.)
Their presence greatly startled me, making me nearly drop my child. I snapped my head in the direction the rapid stepping and shouts were coming from.
I looked at my friends, a surprised smile crossing my face. "Guys! Wh-what're you doing here?"
"Diggs called us!" Rafa answered. "He said you guys were parents now! And," he looked at Sadie, a smile on his face, "he was not lying!"
Oh. So that's why Daveed took so long going to "the bathroom". He wanted to surprise me with the presence of my friends.
"Why would I lie about having a child?" Daveed said, rolling his eyes.
I looked up at Daveed with a smile. "You called them?"
Daveed smiled down at me. "Yep. I figured you'd want some company that isn't me."
"Awww! She's beautiful!" Reneè and Jasmine gushed in unison.
"Thanks," I said with a giggle. "Does anybody wanna hold Sadie?"
Everyone raised their hands but Lin.
Lin dashed up to Sadie and took her from me. He had kids of his own, so it was probably the father in him that made him so excited to hold my newborn.
I didn't tell him to be careful with her like I would've to everyone else. Like I said, Lin had kids of his own.
Lin stared down at Sadie with a smile. "Daveed, she looks just like you!"
Daveed smiled. "I know. But her eyes are just like (Y/N)'s."
Lin nodded. "You could say that again. They're really pretty."
Anthony said, "I wanna hold her next!"
"No fair! I should get her next!" Oak said with a pout.
"Hey, I should be next!" Rafa said, gesturing to himself. "I'm Daveed and (Y/N)'s best friend! I should get...second dibs..."
"But I wanna hold her next!" Jasmine said. "I shouldn't have to wait!"
Reneè was silent, knowing that I would choose the least annoying person to hold Sadie next.
Everyone began to argue with one another, while Daveed and I just watched. (Except for Lin and Reneè. Lin was preoccupied with holding Sadie, while Reneè was trying to be a good noodle.)
He looked over to me and whispered, "You're gonna choose Reneè, aren't you?"
I nodded. "She's been the least annoying," I whispered back.
Daveed nodded.
After about a minute, everyone was still arguing.
"Okay, enough!" I shouted, getting tired of waiting for everyone to shut up.
The arguing stopped, and everyone looked up at me.
"Reneè will get to hold her next," I said, which made everyone that wasn't Reneè groan in disappointment. "She was the quietest."
Reneè smiled, taking Sadie from Lin.
"Wait! My time isn't up!" Lin said with a whine.
"Yes it is!" Reneè said, holding Sadie close to her. "You've held her for, like, two minutes!"
"I expect to hold her for longer!" Oak said. "If two minutes is all I get, then that's just sad."
Anthony nodded in agreement. "I agree with Oak. We should each get a minimum of ten minutes!"
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, that's not happening."
Jasmine scoffed. "Rude. I thought Anthony was being pretty generous with that minimum."
I rolled my eyes once more, looking at Reneè.
She was staring at Sadie lovingly, and I knew that she would treat her as if she was her own offspring. Well, she was Sadie's grandma, so...
Oak straightened his posture and went quiet. I knew he was doing this so that he would get to hold Sadie next.
Rafa caught on to what Oak was doing. "No! Stop it!" he said. "I'm the uncle to this baby! Regardless if I'm loud ot not, I should get to hold her next!"
Oak ignored Rafa and stared at me hopefully.
I decided to throw Oak a bone on this one. "All right, Reneè. Your time is up. Pass her to Oak."
"Yes!" Oak cheered in that freakishly deep voice of his as Reneè handed Sadie to him.
"No!" Rafa cried. "That's not fair, (Y/N)!"
"It's perfectly fair," I said with a smirk. "Oak was being the least annoying out of all of you, so he deserves a reward."
Rafa groaned. "Ugh. I hate you."
"I love you too," I said with a giggle.
That's when I realized something:
Daveed hadn't gotten to hold Sadie. I was hogging her ever since she was delivered.
Guilt began to stab at my heart. Sadie's own father hadn't gotten to hold her.
How could I have missed that?
"Oak, can you give me Sadie for a minute?" I asked.
Oak nodded, handing me my baby.
I then looked up at Daveed, smiled, and handed Sadie to him.
Daveed smiled. "Finally," he said, holding her close to his chest. "You've been a baby-hog these past few hours."
"I could easily take her back," I teased. "So just shut up and enjoy this moment."
"Actually, you can't," Daveed said with a smirk. "I could sprint down the hall with her, and you wouldn't be able to catch up with me, because you're probably sore."
I sighed in defeat. "Just shut up and hold your baby."
Daveed nodded. "Aye, aye, captain." He then looked down at Sadie, a smile crossing his face.
I smiled at his smile. I knew by the way he gentky rocked Sadie and by the way he stared into her eyes that those two would have a bond that would last a lifetime. Sure, they'd have fights triggered by teenaged attitude, but in the end, they would be the best of friends.
And that made me happy.
But, Daveed did need to stay in his lane. Because I wanted a bond with this child as well.
Sadie smiled at her dad, sensing the bond they were about to form as well. She reached up and attempted to touch his floof.
Daveed smiled and let Sadie grab his finger.
Sadie looked fascinated by the finger that she was holding. She giggled, leaving everyone in the room under her spell.
This girl would be able to get whatever she wanted in life.
Including my and Daveed's love.
Yay! 600+ reads! :D
