Chapter 02
"Shaun, did my daughter apply to any new jobs this week?" Mrs Chen asked Shaun directly, taking her seat between you and Katy to start eating. You leaned back in your seat with a proud smirk, watching as Katy frantically signalled for Shaun to keep quiet about the truth.
"She really likes her job. We both do." Shaun claimed, avoiding the question sneakily.
"Mm-hmm." Katy nodded her head along with Shaun's claim.
"Waigong didn't move here from Hunan so you could park cars for a living." Her mom says beside her.
"Well, on that note, I think we're gonna miss our bus." Katy stood abruptly, pushing back her meal.
"Mm." Shaun rushed to finish his breakfast while you stood to join Katy.
"I'm sorry for my unacceptable job. And for staying out late last night, trying to enjoy my life. But one day, I'll make you proud, I promise." Katy claimed, moving to put on her shoes while Shaun took your dishes to the sink and you grabbed your bag again, slinging it over your shoulder.
"I'm proud of you, sis. Parking cars is super hard." Her brother called over to her mockingly.
"Thanks, bro. Maybe one day you'll pass your driver's test, live the dream like me. Come on, Shaun, y/n, let's go." Katy rushed out of the door to avoid further humiliation. Shaun goes to say goodbye to Katy's grandmother as you leave right behind her.
"Bye!" You called to them with a friendly wave, following after your friend as she stormed through the hallway.
"When are you two going to get married?" Katy's grandmother asked Shaun, motioning to where you had just left as he put his shoes on.
"Waipo, we're just friends." Shaun replied in mandarin to her, looking briefly towards the door that you had just walked out of.
"All right. Go, go, go." She scoffed at his response.
"Ready?" You stopped for Shaun to catch up before you left the building, stepping out to the bus stop. The three of you got onto the bus, taking your normal seats next to each other, Shaun sitting between you and Katy.
"Look. Look at that. Look at that girl. She's writing a research paper on a bus." Katy told Shaun after nudging him to get his attention.
"So?" Shaun looked to her with confusion at what her point was.
"That is exactly the daughter my mom wishes came out of her vagina." Katy claimed loud enough that the woman looked over her shoulder with concern.
"I'm sorry about her." Shaun apologized quickly. "She's not the only one writing a research paper" Shaun claimed with a little smile after looking over your shoulder to see what you were working on on your own computer.
"Exactly my point!" Katy exaggerated knowing that her mother loves you like her own daughter.
"What?" You looked up after only catching Katy's last words of the conversation.
"Nothing" Shaun told you with a slight shake of his head. You were about to turn back to your work when you noticed a man had stood abruptly in front of you all.
"How's it goin'?" Shaun asked when the man stared him down intensely.
"Do you want this seat?" you offered, standing up, immediately willing to give away your seat to the man. Shaun grabbed your arm sternly to hold you in place as a weary look set on his face.
"Give me the pendant, and no one gets hurt." The man spoke to Shaun in mandarin.
"Do you know this guy?" Katy looked to her friend who shook his head no, eyes glued on the man and hand set still on your arm.
"Shaun?" You looked to him with worry over the situation.
"I don't know what you're talking about, dude." Shaun snapped at him, prompting you to sit back down nervously. The man reached to grab Shaun's necklace suddenly, the situation quickly escalating. "Hey! Get off of me!" Shaun stood harshly, pushing the man away from him and his friends.
"Whoa." Katy gasped, standing as well in the rush of the pending fight on the bus. He pushed Shaun back and two other men grabbed him, holding him in place. "What is wrong with you, asshole?" Katy snapped at them for how they were treating Shaun, not knowing what was really happening or how this all started.
"Katy" you tried to get her to back off, knowing she would only get herself hurt.
"I don't want any trouble." Shaun told him in mandarin.
"Then give us the pendant!" The man shouted back.
"You have the wrong guy!" You tried to talk them down, stepping up to protect Shaun.
"Does he look like he can fight? Come on, bro!" Katy joined in to help you. The man pushed you back roughly, knocking you into Katy as you both fell into the seats behind you. Shaun put on a stern face and pushed the two guys off of him, quickly acting to fight back. He rushed forward, punching the man who had dared to hurt you. The man was flung across the bus as you and Katy stared in shock.
"You okay?" Shaun looked to you with warm eyes in the tense situation. You stared blankly at him, unsure of how to respond when another man grabbed ahold of his shoulder, pulling him back again. They tried to hurt him, but this time he fought back fiercely. Elbowing one man in the face he managed to narrowly dodge a punch from the other, carefully keeping the pendent out of their reach.
People gasped and shouted in fear while watching the fight on their way to work. Shaun used the poles on the bus to run up the wall and flip behind the man, using the momentum to throw him back into a seat. The second man had gotten up and grabbed Shaun's jacket. Shaun thought quickly, pulling it off and spinning it to tie the man's hands together before punching him and pulling the jacket back over his shoulders.
"Yo, what up, y'all? It's your boy Klev, comin' at you live on the bus. I actually did take a little bit of martial arts as a youth, so I'm gonna try and grade this fight as we're goin'." A man on the bus spoke to his camera as he filmed the fight from his seat, calm about the whole event.
"Katy, what do we do?" You asked with worry and panic for others safety. Shaun pulled one guy into a bar smashing his head into it. He ran towards the back, punching the two men and jumping to kick them, knocking them down fully. He fixed his jacket and a calm silence filled the bus as everyone stared at the new hero.
"Holy shit." Katy gasped from beside you. "Who are you?"
"Shaun!" You warned as a man stood at the back of the bus and pulled off his long jacket to reveal he only had half of an arm. Shaun backed up towards you both as the man stomped forward.
"You got this, bro!" The guy filming called out with encouragement. The man scoffed simply before a blade shot out of his half arm. Your eyes went wide at the sight, getting up to help Shaun when Katy held you back. "My bad." The guy continued filming. The blade was swung at Shaun's head, but he swiftly dodged it. Laying on the ground the blade had cut right next to his head, sparking some of the equipment below the connector inside the bus. Shaun jumped up as the blade cut through the floor again. The bus flew over a hill and passengers called out with panic suddenly. Shaun managed to dodge all hits from the bladed man by jumping around the bus to get away. Shaun grabbed a lady's computer which she had previously been writing an essay on, holding it out to shield his face when the man cut it in half with no mercy.
"No!" The woman cried out sadly for the loss of her work.
"Sorry" Shaun handed back the two pieces that had been left. He kicked the man backward and turned to you and Katy, checking to see if you two were alright.
"What the hell's going on?" You asked in panic.
"You really wanna talk about this now?" Shaun countered, clearly busy. The driver gasped as the bus hit a car in front of you, unable to break or slow down. You fell into Shaun who had held onto a bar to keep you both in place.
"You're right" you agreed with a quick nod.
"Guys we have another problem" Katy pointed out, wearily looking towards the front of the bus.
"What?" You and Shaun both snapped at her.
"The driver" she pointed to the man who had fallen to the ground from his seat.
"Bus driver is down." The filming guy said. "I'm not gonna handle this. Every time I've tried to drive a bus, I get yelled at." He continued with his story calmly as if the bus was not about to crash. The man swung his blade at you and Shaun this time. Shaun pulled your head down to duck and you narrowly missed the blade.
"Y/n!" Katy called with worry as you fall into a seat and Shaun rushed back to the fight to keep you both out of harms way.
"I'm fine" you promised her. Looking up again you saw Shaun grab ahold of the bars and climb towards the front to slip into the drivers seat swiftly. He pulled it around a sharp corner before looking over his shoulder to see the man coming up again from behind, planing his next attack. The man cut the seat in half before attacking Shaun who couldn't drive and fight. You raced forward with determination filling your senses. Grabbing a nearby fire extinguisher, you cracked the bladed man over the head with it, temporarily knocking him down.
"Good job, y/n!" Katy cheered, coming up from behind you. "Go, you freak!" She pulled Shaun out of the drivers seat and took over herself. Shaun pulled the guy to the back of the bus again, keeping you safe as Katy drove. "Y/n, I could use your help!" Katy called to you.
"On it!" You moved to help, hitting a sharp bump and almost falling again. "Woah" you looked behind to see the man had cut open the connector between the front and back of the bus, allowing the cold air to rush in. Katy pulled the bus around a tight corner, you grabbing onto the steering wheel to help make the turn. The bus had tore even further and Shaun noticed the extent of the damage, jumping outside and swinging along the side.
"What is he doing?" You asked yourself, noticing Shaun outside after helping the driver into a seat and checking that he wasn't hurt too badly. The man stabbed at Shaun through the window, which he managed to dodge by dropping lower and running along the street as his feet slid on the pavement. Katy swerved again, Shaun jumping to the roof and running towards the front of the bus where he slid off, grabbing the side mirrors and crashing into the door, causing you to flinch.
"Open the door, please!" He pounded on the windows as Katy gasped at his sudden appearance. She opened the doors with the press of a button and you grabbed him by the jacket, pulling him inside. "The back is about to go. On my signal, make a hard right." He ordered.
"What signal?" Katy called back in confusion, but he had already ran off. Shaun faced off against the men with you right behind him, ready to help get the people to safety. The men who had started the attack had stood to their feet to help finish it.
"Shaun, you better have a good plan" you told him from behind, nervously shifting your feet.
"Just stay behind me" he told you, looking into your eyes to make sure you understood him clearly. You nodded back and he ran forward, blocking every hit and punch with ease and focus. He punched the first guy out of the bus through a window before kicking the next two out of the cut in the side, leaving the last one with the blade arm in the back half of the bus. You stood ready, waiting for him to make it clear for you to help get the people to safety. He pinned the man back, holding him close so that he couldn't hurt anyone easily.
"Y/n!" Shaun shouted at you, giving you your signal. "Everybody to the front now!" Shaun ordered them as you helped pull them across. Reaching over you would grab their hand and help them make the small jump across the connected that was about to split open.
"Go! Go, go, go." You called, rushing them forward.
"What's up, y'all? What's up, y'all? What's up, y'all?" The filming man said to everyone as they joined the front half. The man had harshly pushed Shaun back, aggressively swinging at his head before pinning Shaun to the wall, blade being held back away by Shaun.
"You and your sister deserve what's coming." The man said darkly, low enough for only Shaun to hear. Shaun reached his hand up and pulled the bus string with his two fingers, calmness filling his movement as a ding sounded through the bus.
"That's the signal!"
