I Get Thrown Off The Roof. By My Own Mother.
It started when I turned 15. I had stretched my arms out as I sat in bed that cold day in December. I looked out the window and spoke to myself, "15!!!" Sounds normal so far, right?
Well, throw that thinking out the same window that I saw two glowing objects out of. It seemed as though one shone a soft, vanilla colour, while the other teemed of a hellbent red. Then, I realised they were armed with swords and shields, and wings. Yeah, you heard me right, wings. I blinked a couple of times, then rubbed my eyes in a cliché form. After seeing that the things weren't gone, I stared as the soft white glow swung its longsword into the almost maroon being. As soon as the tip of the sword connected with the red thing, the whole house shook violently. I carefully slipped underneath my bed, since it was raised up higher than most, and waited for what I thought to be an earthquake to be over. All of a sudden, my little brother, Jamie, busted in, screaming, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAX!!!!! IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY, IT'S YOUR BIRTHD— Max, what are you doing under your bed?"
"Wh-what? You don't feel the earthquake...?" I stuttered, then quickly rose from my hiding place (I may or may not have hit my head on the way up).
"Dang 15-years-olds...they're all insane..." Jamie signed and brought his hand to his face, marking a sarcastic facepalm.
"Dang 10-year-olds...they're all annoying..." I stuck my tongue out and he did his super famous, fake, high-pitched, quiet scream (quite the oxymoron) and then told me it was time for breakfast. I was about to leave when I swore I heard something whisper my full name, "Maxine Elise Diano, the great oath to God ", then evaporate with a quiet whoosh. I turned to see who could have possibly called, but not fast enough. The great oath to God? What does that mean?
Breakfast was amazing, thanks to my mum's homemade mini pancakes (mine had rainbow sprinkles, because 1. birthday and 2. RAINBOWS!!!). Anyway, after breakfast (which took two hours, literally), I asked Mum if she had felt an earthquake earlier that day.
"You're probably still tired. I mean, you did stay up until 3:00 in the morning playing Call Of Duty, so..." Normally, I would've believed her, because I did stay up gaming. The only problem was she had this oh crap look in her sea-foam eyes, which were usually as relaxed as a private Hawaiian beach.
"Are you okay, Mum? You seem...nervous about something..." Her eyes were darting left and right. There was definitely something wrong. But, she lied, stating that "everything's alright".
Boom!! Crash!! "DO NOT LIE TO YOUR ONLY DAUGHTER, ANNA CARPUS DIANO!!!" My mother flinched at her full name, and honestly, I would've too, but Jamie didn't seem to noticed a GIANT BOOMING VOICE! Instead, he continued his video games, like nothing weird had happened.
"Come with me, Max." Mum's voice sounded whispery, almost like the voice that had called out my full name. Then, I kid you not, she picked me up, turned me golden, and flew me to the roof. The freaking roof of the apartment complex was at least 10 stories off the ground! Bewildered, I stared at Mum, my expression begging for an explanation. Then, (don't you dare make this weirder than it already is) she lifted up her shirt to expose her back and feathery, light, vanilla wings, which were identical to the ones I had seen when I woke up.
"I am so sorry to do this to you", she started, "but I have to see."
She pushed me off the roof.
Now, normally (I think), a person would either be cursing and swearing left and right or praying to his or her god or gods, but I was straight-up crying. Yes, when you're a mother and you push your 15-year-old daughter, your daughter will cry, almost guaranteed.
All of a sudden, I stopped, but I never touched the hard concrete below. I could feel a gentle breeze all along my front and back, but not where my chest is. I slowly opened my eyes to see two small shadows, both of which had feathers extending outward.
"I knew it!", my mother cheered, wiping tears from her eyes, "I knew you could fly!!"
