Chapter 5

Chloe

Chloe raised an eyebrow at Arthur Raines as he walked towards Bane and her. "You want ME to kill him?" Chloe asked. She guffawed. "I don't know the guy, but consider it done," she said. Raines stopped in front of the sofa, and placed his hand on its armrest. "Don't be too confident. Never be too confident," he replied.

"Bane, set her up. Give her all the info on the man. He's a tricky one, and we don't want anyone seeing  what she does." Bane nodded, and got up. Chloe was still staring at Raines, while he was looking at the TV. She always thought he looked familiar, but she didn't know from where. Bane's phone rang, and Chloe shifted her gaze to him. "Yeah, Al?... Okay... No, I don't think he'll have a problem... She's right here!" He glanced at Chloe. "... Okay, then, see you," he finished, cutting the phone. "Ally?" Chloe asked. Bane nodded. "She's coming here. You don't have a problem with that, right, Mr Raines?" Bane questioned. Raines smiled. "Alison is always welcome here," he replied. Bane smiled back, and walked to the elevator just as it stopped on this floor.

The doors opened and out stepped a cheerful girl, her curly blonde hair bobbing as she walked. She grinned and straightened the owl glasses sitting on her nose. "Hello!" she exclaimed. She hugged her serious father, who awkwardly hugged her back. Alison Bane skipped towards the sofa and flopped down next to Chloe. Chloe smiled at her. Ally was always so full of energy. Bane entered the elevator, followed by Raines, and it set off immediately in the downward direction.

They sat side-by-side in silence, watching the TV as the newsreader talked about trivial things. Well, at least Chloe was silent. Ally was jumping up and down next to her, talking about how hot the newsreader was.

"Girls," Bane spoke from behind. Both girls turned around and saw Bane moving inch-by-inch towards them with a laptop in his hand. "Thought I could sit with you while I search," he continued, and Chloe and Ally both moved to the side. Bane finally reached them and sat between the girls. He opened their database, which was actually direct feed from the FBI database. Of course, thanks to their tech guys, FBI had no idea their information was being used by people other than them.

Bane started up a face match program and uploaded a guy's photo. It immediately started comparing. Chloe examined him more closely. He was wearing a black hoodie, his hood pulled over his head. Black hair peeked out under the hood. It was obvious that he was trying to cover his face, but the hood didn't work that well. Maybe he should have worn a paper bag.

"I've seen him before," Ally said suddenly, and Bane and Chloe looked at her. "Darren, I think his name was. He was in my uni, just the first year. He dropped out after that," she finished. She looked at the two of them, who were still staring at her. Chloe raised an eyebrow. "What?" she asked. "He was hot." She shrugged.

Chloe whistled. "Not bad, Bane. You didn't even have to search," she said. Bane nodded, looking bakc the screen. The program was still running, searching for a face match. "Yeah, but we're gonna need more information than that. That could be his fake name, for all we know," he replied. "Speaking of which, do you know his last name? That might be a bit more helpful." He opened up a search window, and looked at Ally.

She was looking at the ceiling, her eyebrows raised, clearly trying to remember. Chloe looked back at the screen, and settled herself a bit more comfortably on the sofa.

"Nope. Sorry," Ally spoke up. Her father frowned at her. "What?" Bane looked back at the screen, shaking his head. "Having just the first name's of no use. There's gonna be millions of Darrens only in America," he said, closing the search window he had opened a minute ago.

He got up, placing the laptop on where he was sitting. "Our only source is the face comparison program, and that's gonna take a while, so go out and have fun, girls." He walked towards the elevator. Chloe looked at Ally, who had a I-don't-care look on her face. "And by the way," Bane said, and both the girls looked at him. "Having fun does not include getting drunk and killing someone."

He nodded at them, and stepped into the elevator. The elevator doors slid shut, and it began moving down. Chloe turned to Ally with a smirk on her face. "Let's get drunk and kill someone," Chloe suggested. Ally burst out laughing. "I sure am fine with getting drunk, but not with killing anyone," she replied, getting up. "But killing's fun!" Chloe whined, and Ally chuckled. The elevator was back at their floor. Bane must have gotten on some top floor.

They entered the elevator, talking. The last sound in the suite was the sound of Ally's laugh.

After a few hours, Chloe came back into the suite. They hadn't gotten drunk after all- Ally had dragged her to do some book shopping, which was quite boring.

She walked towards the sofa, Bane following right behind her, prattling on about something. She wasn't paying attention to him, however. She was curious to see who her next to-be-victim actually was.

The laptop's screen had switched off on its own. Chloe knelt in front of it, and pressed a random button on the keyboard. The screen lit up, and the first thing she saw were two words.

Newfeld, Darren.

The name sounded slightly familiar to her, but she couldn't place it. It was probably because Ally had been talking about it. "Newfeld, huh?" Bane spoke from behind. Chloe didn't turn back. Her eyes went up a few inches, to a photo of the guy in the earlier picture. His face was much clearer now, and she could see that it was worn out. There was a haunted look on his face, and his eyes looked like they had stuff beyond his age. She wondered what had happened to him that had brought that look on his face.

Chloe suddenly realized that Bane wasn't standing behind her anymore. He was standing in the huge balcony, murmuring on his phone to someone. She could hear him very lightly, saying, "Do you think she'll remember?... Yes, sir. Yes..." He walked further into the balcony, and the little bit that Chloe could hear was also gone.

Chloe knew that Bane had been referring to her, but she didn't know what he was talking about. Remember what? But she couldn't ask questions. She remembered the last time she had asked something that wasn't supposed to be ask. A shiver ran down her spine.

She quickly focused back on the laptop, scanning the data. There was something different about this man, but she didn't know what. She wanted to know.
