Chapter 18
Chloe
The car slowing down woke Chloe up. She had fallen asleep to the sound of the engine, even though she had thought she couldn't. "Wake up, Fel," he urged from the side. Her eyes flew open and she realized that she could see, meaning that he had removed the blindfold.
They were in front of a gate, behind which was a huge building. "This is our high school, Fel," Dar- Newfeld prompted. High school? She didn't know she even went to school. The only time she remembered being in a school was when some guy she had been sent to kill was hiding out there.
"Shall we go in?" he asked. Chloe shrugged and got out of the car. Newfeld followed suit. The gate was closed but not locked, so Chloe pushed it open and went in. The grounds were empty, and she could hear a few murmured voices laughing and talking from inside the school.
"Nice school we studied in," Chloe commented. It was pretty on the outside, and she couldn't believe she had gone to school there. She couldn't believe that she had even GONE to school. To be honest, she had never thought of it. She had better things to do.
"Excuse me!" a gruff male voice exclaimed. There was a short, bulky man in front of them, wearing a uniform. "How may I help you?" he questioned.
"Oh, we're just here to look around the school," Darren- no, NEWFELD, replied.
"Do you have a appointment of some sort?" the man asked. Too many questions. Security guard for sure.
"Uh..." Newfeld drifted off. "No, we don't have an appointment. Are we supposed to have an appointment?" I asked in a honeyed tone.
"Yes, you are." The man frowned. He continued, "Are you sure you're here to look around?"
"Oh, yes, we're sure, Mister," Chloe answered. She walked towards the guard, and placed a hand on his cheek. He squinted his eyes at her, then her hand. "Very sure," she finished.
She felt him stiffen under her hand. Chloe pulled her hand back and stepped away. The stocky man slowly lifted his hands to his neck, veins pulsing in his forehead. With one single sharp twist, his head flipped to the side and he fell to the ground, his weirdly turned head hitting the rock hard path first.
Chloe revolved around and saw Newfeld staring at the security guard's dead body with his mouth hanging open. "I think we can go in now," she informed him, though she was quite sure he already knew.
He slowly looked up at her, and closed his mouth. "Why did you do that?" he muttered. Chloe shrugged. "No big loss. We have a way to go in now," she turned back around and stepped over the still body, "and my powers still work!" She grinned at him.
He shook his head in response. Chloe stopped and folded her arms together. He put his fingers to the guard's nostrils, and sighed. He looked around, then grabbed both of the guard's arms and began pulling him towards the bushes.
"Why do you have such a big problem with me killing him? You're supposed to be a contract killer anyway," Chloe questioned.
He pushed his body behind the green mass of leaves and stood up. "Just because I do it, doesn't mean I like it," he replied in a low voice, staring at the unmoving body. He moved towards her, face grim. "I do it because I have to." His eyes were so black, and in that black was shades of sadness so deep she almost felt like she would do anything to make him happy. ALMOST.
He continued past her, towards the school. "Come on. Might as well go in," he said. "No more killing, though."
Chloe chuckled, pushing away other thoughts of his eyes and following him.
The walls of the school were covered with bad drawings and paintings, probably done by the students. They walked through the corridors, not meeting with anyone. Somewhere, a group of children laughed.
Chloe spotted Da- ugh, Newfeld smiling at the pictures as they passed them. He probably found them adorable, the emotional idiot. She didn't see why the teachers would put them up for everyone to see, because they were all terrible. Either they had bad taste, or they, too, found them 'cute'. She felt that they should all be thrown into a shredder, but hey, who ever listened to her?
He stopped in front of a classroom. It was empty, but Newfeld was staring into it like he could actually see people in there. Oh, that's right. MEMORIES.
She didn't remember anything about this place, if what he was saying was true. Even if she did remember, she doubted that she would have liked it very much.
"This was the first class where we met," Newfeld piped up. "My seat was behind yours, and your friend threw a paper ball at me, to get my attention." He laughed. "You turned around to pick it up, and that's when I saw your face." He looked back at her, shoving his hands into his pockets. "The first time I ever saw the most beautiful girl on the planet."
If Chlow had seen him tell this to someone else, she would have fake puked or something, just to disrupt the moment. But now that it was happening to her, those black eyes filled with such emotion, gazing into hers, she couldn't look away. In fact, she didn't want to look away.
Not breaking eye contact, he turned fully and walked towards her, stopping inches away from her. "Please tell me you remember. Please."
Her eyes were fixed on his face. She realized that she wanted to remember. She wanted to know what it was like to love someone back. Was it possible? Could she actually experience something like that?
He stepped a little closer. Centimetres. "Please," he murmured.
Millimetres. Still too far. She wanted him to close the distance between them. His lips brushed hers, and her eyes closed of their own accord.
The bell rang loudly above them and both of them sprang apart. His mouth was open and he was looking at her. She was looking at him. Too much distance between them again.
No, wait, what was she thinking? She couldn't possibly be thinking things like this. Nobody ever made her feel this way. In fact, nobody ever made her feel ANYTHING. Except for him.
No flaws. She was perfect. She didn't melt for guys like him. She didn't melt for ANYONE.
He opened his mouth further, as if to say something, then closed it fully. He straightened, took a deep breath, then said, "I think I've shown you enough."
Chloe straightened as well. That had been a moment of stupidity, never to be repeated again. No flaws. "All right," she replied. Don't show weakness. Always stand tall. So, that's what she did. She nodded at him. Always nod to show power.
"Let's go."
