Chapter 16

Chloe

"I have another tracker."

The words came out of her mouth before she could stop herself. What? Why was she helping him? She wanted to get out of there. Right?

He was looking at her with an incredulous look on his face. Yeah, you're not alone in that, she thought to herself.

No. He had been right. She was curious. Curious enough to give away the position of her second secret tracker. Curious enough to give away her last chance of getting out of there.

She pointed at her ankle. "They planted it there." He snapped out of the trance and walked up to her. "Why are you telling me?" he asked, kneeling in front of her for the second time that day.

Chloe realized that if he was actually telling the truth, if they had actually dated and she had just forgotten, and if that relationship had continued peacefully without her becoming a killer for some mob boss, then he might be kneeling in front of her, with a ring in his hand.

He was looking at her ankle now, examining it from all directions, probably wondering how they inserted it. "You didn't answer my question," he said.

"I have no idea why I told you. But I did, and there's nothing we can do about it," she replied. Flashes of her imaginary alternate reality kept coming in her mind. What was wrong with her? "We'll have to take it out as soon as possible," he said.

He stood up again. "Eat your lunch. I'll be back." He walked out of the room with a grim expression on his face, leaving her alone with her food and thoughts of her ankle getting cut up.

Chloe woke up with a start. Her ankle was throbbing slightly, from the little 'operation' that Newfeld had done. Before starting, she had been given clothes to change into, which were actually the old woman's clothes. They were a little tight on her, but it was better than wearing that dress the whole time. After that, she had been made unconscious, which was good, because the pain would have been unbearable if she had been awake.

She remembered how they had placed the second tracker in her ankle. She wasn't supposed to know about it, and they had attempted to make her unconscious before bringing her to the operation room. But the sedative hadn't worked fully, and so she had been slightly awake during the entire procedure. She hadn't screamed.

She had never questioned why they attempted to plant a second tracker without her knowledge, however. After the procedure had gotten over, she had been taken back to her room, still pretending to be asleep, and she had woken up, pretending nothing had happened over the night.

Chloe pushed herself up against the wall, making sure not to move her ankle too much. She assumed she couldn't call out, Newfeld would have made sure the room was soundproof, and that no sound could go outside.

What was she doing? She had helped him. Yeah, she was curious. But should that overrule her priority? What was her priority? The mission. Her mission to kill him. She had gotten sidetracked. Distracted, by the promise of information. She never would have felt all this before. She would have killed him and she would be targetting someone else by now. But because her powers hadn't worked on him, he had kidnapped her, and was trying to change her mindset. He was trying to make her believe that she wasn't who she thought she was.

But she couldn't deny that there was something different about him. She didn't know what it was. Something was different from all the other men she had met.

And that attracted her.

Bane

"We searched the entire town, sir. She isn't anywhere," Howles said, just a step behind him. The burly man towered over Bane. He could kill him if he wanted to.

"Every nook and corner?" Bane asked. Mr Raines had asked to meet at Saunders' office, probably to talk about the failed Riley search.

"Yes, sir. We believe that the tracker has been removed, or there is a problem with the software," Howles replied.

"Of course, the tracker has been removed, you idiot. As much as I wish that our software was the problem, it's the tracker. Saunders is unfortunately too talented," Bane countered. He sighed. Oh, what he wouldn't do to get Saunders fired... But he was a valuable asset for them. Mr Raines would never allow it.

"Yes, sir," Howles simply replied. Bane stopped in front of Saunders' office. "You'll be informed if you're needed. You can go," he dismissed him. Howles saluted once, and left. Bane took a breath, and pushed open the door to the room.

Mr Raines was seated in the one chair in the room, while Saunders stood behind him, looking at the computer. He was tapping one foot in impatience. He looked up at Bane as he came in.

"Andy!" Saunders exclaimed. Bane braced himself for another period of stupidity from Saunders. "You should have knocked. Where are your manners, young man?" He walked over to Bane. Mr Raines lightly glanced up at the two of them.

Bane glared at Saunders. "I'm 51," Bane replied, gritting his teeth. Saunders came close to him, standing centimetres away from Bane. "Well, you'll always seem young and handsome to me, Andy," Saunders replied quietly, his voice deep. Bane flinched and stepped back. "Piss off, Saunders."

"Quiet, the two of you," Mr Raines interrupted. Saunders winked at Bane before going to stand behind Mr Raines. Bane huffed, and joined the two of them.

"We're tracking her second tracker. Even she doesn't know about it, so the chances of that being taken out are very low," Saunders informed Bane before he could ask what was going on. "We're waiting for it to pinpoint a-" Saunders was cut off by a beep from the computer.

The computer showed Riley. AGAIN.

"Impossible. We just searched the area and she's not there," Bane protested. "There's something wrong with the software."

"No. There's nothing wrong with the software. It's correct," Mr Raines said.

"But-"

"The TRACKER is in Riley," Mr Raines continued. He turned around to look at Bane and Saunders. "Not Chloe."

"But there's no way the tracker could have been removed. She herself didn't know it was there!" Bane exclaimed.

"I don't know, Bane." Mr Raines turned around to face the computer. The red dot over Riley was blinking.

"What I do know, is that the trackers aren't the way to find her."

"Don't worry, sir," Bane assured. "We'll find her. We have to." But he wasn't so sure of it himself.
