Chapter 15

The building was in an uproar. People were bustling about, moving here and there, from one end of the building to the other. They figured that if they attempted to stay busy, they wouldn't face Mr Raines' anger again.

Bane stopped a man who was speed-walking in front of him. "Any updates?" he asked.

"No, sir. We're still searching as hard as we can, sir," the man replied. Bane nodded, and the man continued on his way.

When Chloe Garnett had gone after the murderer at the fashion show, and hadn't returned, Mr Raines had exploded. The normally calm and composed man had burst, and most of the workers, Bane included, had been at the wrong end of his anger.

Garnett had been a useful resource, doing the necessary dirty work required to be on top of a business like this. Now that she had disappeared, they were struggling to find a new hitman to do the work she had done.

They weren't sure if she had escaped on her own or if she had been kidnapped. Rumours were that she had escaped and was going to come back and take revenge for exploiting her. That, however, was unlikely to happen. She only knew a small world. That small world consisted of obeying the orders they gave her. She shouldn't be able to think outside of it.

The elevator slid open, and Mr Raines stepped out. The whole room came to a halt. They were looking at him, and every person he passed bowed a little and greeted him, him nodding in response. Bane got to his feet just as Mr Raines passed him, who beckoned at Bane to follow him. "Sir," he murmured in response, following a little behind him.

There were a few whispers in the room, Bane noticed, probably because Mr Raines had come down. He never came down, or at least, not into the sight of the workers. Bane always conveyed his orders. Mr Raines had never needed to come down.

They walked through a few corridors, stopping in front of a door, a cardboard sign hanging on it. Written in black marker, was Adrian Saunders, Professional Hacker.

"Sir? Why are we here?" Bane questioned. The last person Bane wanted to meet was Saunders, an annoying little 19 year old college kid who just happened to be talented with computers. So, he worked for them, helping them when it was necessary. He also just happened to be bisexual, so he took the chance to hit on Bane whenever he could, just to annoy him.

"I wanted to see out progress in finding Miss Garnett myself, Bane," he said. Mr Raines turned around to look at him. "I'm allowed to do that, aren't I?" he questioned, glaring at Bane. The glare that intimated everyone.

"Yes, sir, of- of course, you can," Bane stuttered.

"Good." He turned back around and knocked on the door. "Come in!" A male voice shouted from within. Bane fumed, "How dare he talk like that? Sir, let me-"

"It's fine, Bane," Mr Raines interrupted him. He opened the door and walked in. Adrian Saunders was sitting down, his feet up on the desk, meddling with his phone. He glanced up at them, and jumped to his feet, dropping his phone on the desk. "Mr Raines, sir!" he exclaimed, faking a salute.

The desk itself was cluttered. There was a computer, surrounded by empty pizza boxes, and thermocol coffee cups.

"How's everything going, Mr Saunders?" Mr Raines asked.

"Mr Saunders, yeah, that's me, alright," Saunders muttered. He pushed all the empty boxes onto the floor, leaving the floor a mess. "It's still tracking. Takes some time, these old fashioned trackers." He sat back on the chair, and started typing into the computer. " Even though I gave it a few updates myself. There's not much you can do, you know." He pressed one last key, before turning the computer towards them. "See for yourself," he finished.

There was a map laid out on the screen, but no place was marked. On top, it said 'Tracking...'

"Oh, Andy! I didn't notice you were there!" he cried. "How you doin'?" he asked, winking at him. "Shut up, Saunders," Bane retorted.

Suddenly, the computer pinged. "Ah! You're a lucky man, Mr Raines!" Saunders turned the computer back toward himself, and started typing again. "This has loaded at the exact same time that you came here! Coincidence? I think not!" He turned the computer towards them again. "I think it's FATE," he whispered.

The computer showed a place called Riley, a small town which was a few miles away from the city. "Shall I send out some men, sir?" Bane asked, pulling out his phone.

"She's not there," Mr Raines replied. Both Bane and Saunders looked at him. "I know her. She's not there."

"But, sir, how do you-"

"She's not there, Bane. She would never stay somewhere like that."

"There's no harm in checking the place out," Saunders interjected. For the first time, Bane agreed with him. "I agree, sir. We should check it out anyway, just in case."

The room was quiet for a few minutes. "Fine," Mr Raines finally said.

"Okay, sir. I'll send out a few men to scout the area," Bane said, tapping on his phone a few times, before placing it to his ear. Mr Raines walked out of the room in silence.

As Bane waited for the call to pick up, Saunders said, "So, Andy, you're gonna stay here with me? I know some things we can do." Bane looked at him, and he had a smirk etched into his face.

"I'm leaving. Goodbye," Bane commented, and walked/ran out of the room. "Don't leave me alone, Andy!" Saunders called after him.

Nobody was picking up. Bane pulled the phone away from his ear, and cut the call. "Send 4 men out to Riley. Inconspicuous," he said to a woman who passed him. The woman nodded, and started walking faster.

In a way, Bane felt a little sad for Garnett. She was, after all, the same age as his own daughter, and she was going through so much. She would go through even more when they brought her back. Mr Raines would make sure of that.
