Seventeen
Amora was in the operating room. My shirt was covered in dust and Amora’s blood. I paced the hallway, unable to sit still or stand still. I tried to imagine my life without Amora and all I saw was death. The longer the doctors stayed in the operating room, the faster my heart beat. It beat so fast I thought it would give out. Then it came to me. That part of the book of Matthew chapter twenty eight verse twenty. That part that said, lo, I am with you always.
I sat and tears like a river flooded down my eyes and I cried. I cried so hard. Harder than I have in my entire life.
“Please don’t take her. Please. I can’t live without her. I can’t go on without Amora. Please don’t take my wife.” I prayed and somehow, calmness came upon me and I slept off, right on that chair.
“Mr. Roman.” Someone tapped me. It was the doctor. I stood to my feet in utmost speed.
“How is my wife?” I asked with eyes wide open.
“Alive. We thought she wouldn’t make it. Her heart stopped and restarted twice.” The doctor sighed. “Your wife will be fine. She fought to stay alive.”
Happiness like I had never known before rushed through me. “Thank you doctor.”
I got on my knees immediately and I shut my eyes tightly. “Thank you. Thank you for saving her.”
“Roman.” I turned and she was awake. Amora was awake. I dived to her side.
“Amora. You are okay baby. You are okay.”
Tears came down her eyes. “What about…”
“He’s gone. We don’t have to worry about him again.”
She blinked, “I’m so happy to see you Roman. I saw death. I thought I died.”
“They said your heart stopped twice. Amora, I’m glad you came back to me. I’m glad you are okay.” I took her hand and pressed it to my lips. “Marry me, Amora.”
“Roman. I’m already your wife.” She said softly.
“I know but I want you to marry me again. This time, I want you to wear a beautiful white dress and I want the church to be filled with people. I want to watch you walk down the aisle. I want everyone to see that I’m the luckiest man alive. Then I want us to go on a honeymoon, wherever it is you want to go, wherever it is you’ve dreamed of going.”
Amora smiled and touched my face again. “I love you so much Roman and I’d marry you a hundred times if you want me to.” Then she chuckled, “But first, I have to get out of this hospital.”
“Of course.”
