~ Chapter 6 - Rumors ~
Logan pulled out his phone, checking the address once again. He wasn't sure why Desmond had suggested studying at his dorm, it would have been much easier to study at the library where they had full access to the required reading documents. Desmond claimed that the library was too crowded and it would be difficult for him to use his text to speech software in a place where he was supposed to be quiet. Logan didn't buy it. Desmond didn't seem like the type of person who cared about what other people thought. One might be able to argue that Desmond didn't want to irritate the librarians but Logan was still unconvinced. He could not think of a logical reason why it was better to work at someone's house, so there had to be something Logan was missing.
Knocking on the door he waited, his curiosity gaining hold of him. Was Desmond keeping secrets? That wasn't really a question, Logan knew he was keeping secrets it was just a matter if any of those secrets pertained to this issue. Was there an emotional reason? He was almost certain there was, sometimes Logan forgot that other people made decisions based on emotion and not logic. It was a strange behavioral pattern but one he couldn't dismiss.
The door opened and Desmond stepped aside, waving for Logan to come in.
"Thank you." He said, stepping inside and taking off his shoes. "I have prepared a list of topics we can go over, I believe I sent you your half already."
Dee rolled his eyes and nodded, leading Logan over to the table, where a few sparse materials were already set up. If he genuinely believed that he would get away with doing only half of his work, Desmond would find he was sorely mistaken. Logan adjusted his tie and prepared himself for war as he sat down. It didn't take long for Logan to realize he was the one that was mistaken.
Dee seemed to have most of the information he had been asked to get, though he hadn't seemed to research anything extra. Logan wasn't sure if that was a form of defiance, or if he was the type of person who only listened to straight forward instructions. He was debating asking before another person walked out into the apartment.
"Oh, hello, are you Logan? Desmond told me you were coming over."
"Yes, that is my name," he said, holding out his hand.
"Pleasure to meet you. My name is Patton and I am Desmond's roommate."
"Ah, interesting."
"Oh, how so?"
Logan looked over to Des, who's eyebrow was raised slightly. "From what I've heard, Desmond has a track record of cycling roommates."
Both of the men looked at him in surprise.
"That wasn't very nice," Patton said softly, looking at Logan with sad eyes.
"Apologies, I was just stating facts."
'It's fine.' Logan heard the electronic voice of Desmond's computer. 'Like he said, it's the truth. I'm not ashamed of it.' After typing out his response, Des stood, stretching his arms before signing something to Patton.
"Oh, are you sure?"
He nodded, grabbing his jacket before looking over to Logan, nodding his head to him.
"Oh, right! Des says that he is going to go get dinner but you two still have a lot of work to do so feel free to chill here."
Once again Logan felt confused. They had done a lot of work so far and it would be easy enough for them to leave off here and pick it up later. Also, he wasn't sure if he was being offered dinner as well or if he should help pay.
"What would you like?"
"Hm?"
"Des is going to pick up Chinese food from a nearby restaurant, what would you like?" Pat asked.
"Of course," Logan gave his order and handed over some money which Des accepted without hesitation. Then he left.
"Patton?" Logan turned to look at him as soon as Des left the room. "May I ask you a question?"
"Of course you can, you just did silly."
He sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose before straightening his tie. "Why were you defending him?"
"What?"
"Why were you defending Desmond? Surely you know the rumors about his habit of chasing away roommates, you are most likely his next target. Why defend him."
"I know I don't know you well but you seem like a really smart cookie Logan, so, do you have evidence about all of this?" He had walked into the kitchen, getting out what he needed to make actual cookies, "Because you really shouldn't believe in rumors without evidence."
Logan's mouth fell open a bit, looking at Patton incredulously.
"You were talking about him like he is out to get people, but everything I have seen, he is just someone who wants to protect himself. That can be destructive sometimes, but it's not always a bad thing." He gave Logan a smile and Logan felt himself flush with embarrassment. Patton was right, he had jumped to conclusions based on the rumors that he had heard and not based on any evidence that he had seen for himself.
Turning he looked at the notes that Desmond had left behind, written in a tight cursive that didn't take up much space on the page. He had done all of the work Logan had asked, and with Logan having taken charge on the project, he hadn't complained. There was a bit of manipulation that Logan had noticed, but it didn't feel malicious. It had mostly been Desmond trying to convince Logan to include information from the Sherlock Holmes books as part of their project. Not an idea he was completely against but also not something that felt inherently professional.
"I apologize, Patton, I believe you are right." His voice was barely a whisper and Patton didn't respond. He was still humming as he mixed the cookie dough and Logan wondered if he had even been heard. No matter, Patton wasn't the person he should apologize to anyway.
"Patton." He stood up, gathering his things. "Will you apologize to Desmond for me? I must leave and take care of some things at home, but I will make sure to continue working on the project so that we don't fall behind."
"Well, okay, but you could also text him and let him know."
"I will once I get back home." He had a lot to think about on the drive there.
