Layla was doing some paper work in her office. After she left her mate while they were waking up the previous Alpha and Luna, she took her space. She was hurt by Marley, the young she wolf who wouldn't hurt a fly.
A knock echoed on her door. She glanced up seeing Luna Denice standing there.
"I thought you would have been at the meeting since Marley's your mate," she questioned, giving the Head Doctor a warm smile as she sat down.
Layla huffed, "I decided I didn't want to go."
The Luna looked at her, quickly catching her lie. "I know our friendship had crashed and burned, but I can still tell when you're lying, Layla."
"What do you want out of this conversation?" Layla asked, taking her focus off of her paperwork.
Denice frowned, "I'm just trying to help you. I made mistakes, Layla, and I was too stubborn to admit it. Let me be the friend that I'm supposed to be."
"This isn't about you, Denice," Layla grumbled.
"You know we have cameras in the dungeons, right?"
Layla looked at her confused, but she nodded her head.
"I don't know the exact issue between you two, but Doctor Brian has misinformed Marley about our friendship. He was just trying to get into her head," Denice explained.
The Head Doctor sighed, "It's more than that. Gabby gave me an earful too."
"Then what is it about?"
Layla shook her head, "It's really none of your concern."
Denice sighed, "I know Gabby is your B-F-F now, but I've known you since we were pups."
The Head Doctor bit her lip before sighing, "Was I ever controlling when we were younger?"
Denice stared at her for a moment, "All wolves are controlling. You had your moments, but it was usually when you were scared.
"And the whole wolf species is about to go to war, and your mate is a very important target for the enemy."
Layla nodded her head, and Denice took a seat. She bit her lip, "I wanted to apologize about what happened at the hearing; it wasn't ok. I'm ought to just trust into my sister."
The Doctor nodded her head, "How are you doing with all of that?"
"She killed her family. We may be blood, but we will never be heart and soul again," the Luna answered, tapping her fingers on her desk — a nervous habit she had since she was little. "A part of me wants her to die," she dryly chuckled, "because she brought this evil to our doorstep. Another part of me is forgetting what she has done, and I want to protect her because of it.
"I still see her as a little girl, and not a murderous, lying, backstabbing..." she trailed off, sitting her head down.
Layla chuckled, "I guess we have the same problem. I see Marley as a pup, even though she towers over me."
Denice laughed, "When I first meet her, I didn't realize I would have to crane my neck back so much to look her in the face."
"Yeah, she's tall, and I keep forgetting that she's an adult and she can make her own decisions."
There was a knock on the door, and the Doctor and the Luna turned to look. Luna Hannah was standing in the door way. "I can't guarantee that all her choices are good," she mumbled, hinting at something that neither of the audience picked up on.
"How are you Luna Hannah?" Luna Denice asked, relaxing into the chair.
Luna Hannah shook her head, "Are you referring to my mate and my so-called best friend? I have bigger things to worry about than unfaithful wolves. The Moon Goddess isn't merciful when it comes to faith."
"Sounds like a story," Layla joked, unknown that it was going to be told.
"There was an Alpha, whose pack was often blessed by the Moon Goddess. She always gave the Alpha family a kin. She would give them both males and females, and they all would often be strong, smart, and everything a leader would need.
"The last born son got upset, for it's the firstborn who gets the throne of an Alpha. One night, there was a terrible fire. It burned through the civilization, and it started at the Alpha's home. Many wolves died, and the last born son became the Alpha when he orphaned himself along with taking the lives of his brothers and sisters.
"He turned his back on his Goddess, for she didn't hand him the Alpha title. He soon found his mate, a wonderful woman who had a hand of bad cards in life. Due to her mate's actions, she couldn't get pregnant. She prayed to her Goddess, and the Goddess took mercy on her.
"She got pregnant, but both her and the baby died during birth. The Moon Goddess kept the connection from the Alpha to his dead mate, but destroyed the connection from the dead mate to the Alpha. The son was in pain, and he grew angry. He started to mark and impregnate female wolves, a massive fuck you too to the Moon Goddess, but she follow the same protocol that she did with his true mate.
"He died from the pain from all the mate bonds because the female wolves found their true mates. Then his kin were not loyal to him."
"How do you remember all these stories?" Denice asked, never hearing anything about them. It made since that they didn't due to the Healing Moon Pack isolating themselves, but it was still fascinating. She wondered how many mates would have stayed loyal to their other half, and then she looked down — realizing, she gave up on hers even though the mate bond didn't die before she mated with the Alpha.
Hannah only smiled, "There are just some things you never forgot." She turned to Layla, "Support your mate, Head Doctor. Stop hiding in this room like coward."
The Doctor glared, "When you reject your mate I will."
"Very well."
