#7 Rahat-e-rooh Yeh Dosti (II)

Monday night. Samrat finds Tanvi in the cafeteria at the end of his shift. It's close to midnight. He's glad she's here like usual, waiting for him to take her home.

He sits across from her at the table and clears his throat, keeping his conversation light.

"Arey wah, Tanvi! Aajkal tumhare aur mere shifts kabhi ek sath khatam nahi hote! Lekin aaj ho gaye."

"Ha, Sam! Uh, jaane se pahle coffee ho jaye?"

Tanvi smiles at Samrat. That small smile thrills his heart, delights him after the pain he's caused her. His heart skips a beat and then two. He has trouble hearing what she said and processes it later.

"Han! Han, zarur, Tanvi!"

Ramu kaka brings coffee. They fall silent, facing each other in the otherwise empty cafeteria. Samrat speaks first.

"Tanvi... I'm sorry about yesterday. I know I upset you. I'm truly sorry."

"Tum kitni bar sorry bologe mujhe, Sam?"

"Kal main kuchh jyada hi bhavuk ho gaya tha. Tanvi, Please tum naraz mat hona..."

"Nahi..." Tanvi shakes her head. Though for a split second she looks pained, she smiles. "Main tumse naraz rahungi toh kya hum dono ka dard kam hoga?"

Samrat does a double take at her expression. "Hum dono ka?"

"Khair coffee peete hai!"

Tanvi breezes past his question and sips her coffee. A moment later, she looks at him.

"Tum ab thik ho na, Sam?"

Samrat smiles at the concern in her eyes. "I'm fine. Han! Maine kaha na kal kuch zyada emotional ho gaya tha. Ab roz roz toh dard se nai mar sakte na! Mujhe apne duties bhi toh focus karni hai. Don't worry, I'm fine. I promise."

She smiles, a bit relieved but still stiff. They finish their coffees in silence.

"Good to know, Sam. Let's go home! Lagta hai Farhan ko aaj over duty lagi hai..."

"Han, uska message aaya mujhe bhi." Samrat nods. They exchange small smiles and step out of the cafeteria. As he gets his jeep and they drive to the residential quarters, he can't get her words from before out of his head. "Hum dono ka dard..."

Tumhe kyu dard ho raha hai, Tanvi? And why did you forgive me so easily? Farhan keh raha tha you cried for my sake... Why? I hope the reason isn't what I think it is. I know you don't like Saumit. Tumhe jhoot bolna nahi aata. Especially when it's not for a mission. Toh, why are you lying?

Samrat turns to her when they pull outside her apartment block.

"Seriously, Tanvi... tumne mujhe itni aasani se maaf kar diya after I upset you. That's not done. Tumhare liye kya karun main?"

"Oh, Sam..."

Tanvi smiles at Samrat, shifts from foot to foot before mumbling out a bizarre request.

"Mere pair dhuk rahe hai bahut aaj. And you know there's no lift in our apartment blocks. Can you just... drop me at my doorstep?"

"It's a joke..." Before she can say that he's already lifted her in his arms and is carrying her up the stairs. "What? Stop, Sam! No... it was a joke! Joke tha bas!"

"It's fine. And it's a splendid workout."

"Workout? Iss waqt? You collapsed the other day, Sam. Strain ho jayega, put me down!"

Samrat doesn't, not until they reach the door to her room.

"This doesn't seem enough," he says with a small sigh after she finds her footing. "Soch lo, aur kya karwana hai mujhse."

Tanvi is glad to hear him sound normal. Unlike the other day, he doesn't sweat or gasp for breath, which is a relief. He may have made a full recovery, but that doesn't stop her face from going up in flames. The hallway light is dim, so he may not notice—

"Your face is so red. You know that, Tanz?"

He noticed! "Whatttt? My face! Haha! Yeah, Sam. Mera chehra ajkal... it keeps changing colours! If you find me working on a Sukhoi during the afternoon shift, it will be purple. And if you find me working alongside Asha, it will be yellow. And when Tarun tries to hit on me, then it will be blue—"

She waves her arms and laughs. Samrat shakes his head at her in disbelief.

"Achha? Are you a chameleon? Hahaha! Oh god!"

"Chameleon? How rude! But it's made you laugh so okay!"

"Tanvi, you're... Wait, Tarun is trying to hit on you? That bastard—"

Samrat frowns, suddenly looking cross. Tanvi shrugs. "It's nothing, really. I'm handling it. Valentine's time hain na. Not like I'm the popular, sought out girl. You know? Things happen. Okay now, I'm going to sleep—"

Tanvi rushes into her room and closes the door so suddenly that he's befuddled, questioning himself about what happened. He raps his knuckles on the door.

"Tanvi! That was so sudden. Warning toh deti before you slam a door in my face—"

A moment's silence, then he hears Tanvi's voice. "Sorry. Mujhe neend aarahi hai!"

"Suddenly?"

"Arey, raat itni hogayi, Sam... tum bhi so jao!"

"We didn't exchange goodbyes for the night or say good night."

"Ab bol rahi hu na... Good night, Sam."

Heh, Samrat chuckles to himself as he walks back to his jeep. Silly girl. If this is you trying to hide your crush on me, you're being too obvious... Nah, I'm reading too much into this. You're just... you. Wacky, but still so innocent despite being an officer.

Meanwhile Tanvi goes to bed, chiding herself for acting like a teen — flustered by a mere kind gesture of Samrat and causing a fuss after.
