Headlights
The stillness of the night lingered a sense of tranquility towards Lucille as she sauntered away from the party she'd just left. Her hands trembled inside her hoodie pockets while the thought of the previous events returned to her mind, and she headed down the abandoned road that dotted not a single car in the distance.
Only minutes before had she encountered the affection of another. The way his arms gratified her drunken needs guiltily replayed beneath her clothing. She hadn't caught the identity of her pleasure giver, which she regretted very deeply at this time. But she knew she had to move on.
The wonderful sensation faded from her skin as a thin breeze whistled through the trees, and then made its way past the fabric of her leggings. A shiver jolted down her neck when the intruding thought of loneliness shot through her head. She wished she hadn't fled from his loving so soon.
She wanted someone at her side, right then, their fingers laced with hers, telling her she looked beautiful in the cyan-colored moonlight.
There was a sudden engine-gasping noise echoing behind her. She turned around, and saw a pair of broad headlights pointing in her direction. The longer she stood there in question, the more the brightness of the orbs intensified through the shallow fog, which had now swirled up to her waistline.
A panicky, queasy feeling churned inside her stomach. Her instincts did not approve of one vehicle on the road that supposedly led to nowhere.
So she ran.
She wasn't specifically sure why or what she was running from, but she just went with it. Something about this situation did not feel right.
The yellow light had neared her, by now, for she could visualize the color illuminating the pavement beside her. She quickened her pace to a sprint, and cautiously veered more to the left, so she could space herself from the road.
The car broke the law's parameters by clearly going well-beyond the speed limit—but there were no cops, nor anyone else nearby to ticket the driver for doing so.
It was undoubtable that whoever was behind the wheel was targeting Lucille. She seemed to have run out of escape options, for the car was right next to her, one of its sides even skimming the outsides of the lane. This was forcing her to go only forwards. She considered going backwards, but she wasn't sure what would happen if she attempted that. Uncertainty helped her decide to drop the idea.
Miraculously, she spotted an opening in the fence beside her. She riskily dashed through the space and tried not to look back.
Thank God, she thought, panting as her feet began to slow.
She may have just been a bit too hopeful if she thought she was safe...
In horror, she froze fearfully at the ear-splitting sound of tires whirring across the cement. The headlights flashed among the trees of the forest in which she now hid. The driver slammed on the gas petal and sped through the wired fence, just barely missing a medium-sized evergreen.
Unfortunately, Lucille's adrenaline did not kick in. She prayed for her life as the vehicle came at her with incredible speed.
She braced herself for death when the bright setting of the twin lamps nearly blinded her. She squinted her eyes shut, and remembered the last person who made her happy. Lucille felt his lips once again attain her own equal amount of strength for the passionate fire that burned between both her and her partner's hearts. She longed to acquire that feeling again before she would be put at eternal rest. She did not want her life to be over yet.
At the last split second, the car halted at a stomp on the breaks. Lucille had not been hit.
Her eyes blinked open with curiosity as to why she was still alive. Just then, and only then, did she wonder if the driver had been her ephemeral lover.
With confidence and excitement, she leapt to her feet, the fall leaves crunching beneath her Converse as she approached the car's driver-side window.
But when she peered through the glass, the seat was empty.
