Chapter 29: Ignition
At a time convenient, Micah reluctantly met up with Aidan and they sat together in Wendy's. Aidan had nervous sweat dripping down his forehead as his son made no attempt to cover the fact that he didn't want to be there.
Micah's eyes narrowed, and his mouth morphed into a hard frown while munching a burger. He glared at the blank table like it was his enemy and the one wasting his time. He knitted his eyebrows harshly, and wasn't bothered of changing his expression, like he was pretending to be happy for Aidan's comfort. For he would rather be anyplace else on Earth.
"So..." Aidan began. He flexed his fingers as Micah's dark glare stiffened him on the spot.
"Well? What you got?" Micah demanded suddenly and sharply with the swiftness of his voice.
"Alright slow down, I'll get them out," Aidan said and started digging through his bag.
Micah kissed his teeth and tucked his arms. This was accompanied with a heavy eye roll that almost made his pupils run to the back of his head. Aidan caught sight of this and was puzzled by his attitude.
"What's your problem? I'm trying to help you here," he asked with his voice tinted with annoyance. He arranged the papers out and placed them on the table.
"It's nothing," Micah grumbled and looked to the floor. Being this near Aidan like this made him fidget uncomfortably.
"It's always nothing with you, just making complaints for no reason," he muttered irritably, but shook the rest of his thoughts away.
However, Micah's ears perked up at the minor comment, and he felt some anger burning inside. It was just the same things being repeated over once more. His feelings never listened to. It made his mind increasingly frustrated as his voice bubbled in his throat. But he refused to do so as he came here for one thing: finding his kids.
Therefore, he clutched his hands together. They were shaking violently but he restrained them together, not letting the fury escape.
"Mason told me to give this to you," Aidan said and pushed the documents to him.
Micah took them off the table while eating a fry. At least this was distracting him away from looking at Aidan's face.
"Also, I was wondering if after this we could talk a little. You know, as father and son."
"Why?" Micah questioned, no emotion ran through his voice. "There's nothing to talk about, there never has been."
"Well there are many things to catch up on. I want to know what you have been getting up to these past few years."
"Nothing." He bluntly ended it with a full stop. "You never cared to hear what I had to say so why bother."
"Well many things. I want to know how you and Mariana's lives have been getting on. I would also like to meet my grandchildren when we find them."
"That's not gonna happen." Micah shook his head and ate some more fries. His eyes kept to the paper and drank some coke.
"Now can we just get to the point?" He waved the sheets around with force and slapped them down. "This is already uncomfortable and I just want to find my kids."
Aidan sighed and nodded. "Fine. He said they managed to trace the phone number to a woman called Pamela."
"Really?" He muttered and stared the papers, what Aidan said transitioned like a blur through his ears.
"Yep. They think she may have provided some aid to Mona and may have an idea where she is right now."
"Okay, that's good." Micah nodded in satisfaction at the results. The papers only brought out a small grin from him, but nothing was shown to Aidan.
"Anything else?"
"Not yet. They are still analyzing some stuff, but that's all we have got so far."
"Alright in that case, I'll be going now." He immediately stood up and clutched the papers. Not once did he make eye contact as he asked, "can I keep these?"
"Yeah you can. I photocopied those ones, so you can have a copy to yourself."
Micah didn't say anything but their eyes briefly met. Aidan had a look of concern which was laced with a hint of happiness. But his son looked at him as something to be despised. He scowled at the way Aidan looked at him and snatched the papers, stuffing them into the bag.
"Let me know if there's any new updates," Micah said and finished up his food. He quickly left a tip before leaving the table.
"Wait Micah," Aidan said, holding his arm out. Micah wasn't listening and walked out the door. So Aidan chased after him and caught up just as he was about to turn.
"Why don't we try and talk?" Aidan tried suggesting again. This time, his son froze and clenched his fists. Heavy puffs of air escaped his nostrils like a steam engine. He was getting increasingly fed up with Aidan trying to talk to him.
"Is Mason not good enough for you Aidan that you now want to pry into my life?" Micah turned and started shouting at him. Aidan's jaw dropped as he was too stunned but Micah continued.
"An *azaroso you are! Did you ever think of using your head to why I disappeared?" Micah increasingly raised his voice, spitting out the syllables like bullets. There was a heating burn pulsing inside his heaving chest, propelling him on.
"Have you never questioned the way you relentlessly compared me to Mason? Never giving me a chance, and even taking the side of Electra just because she liked Mason more." His tone dangerously increased with the harsh swipe across his nose. His eyes pierced a glare into Aidan, who was frozen like a statue.
"How do you think I felt?" He demanded with a shout that extracted all his might. "All that blaming, the belittling. And you think it's so okay just to forget about it and expect me to talk to you?"
He was completely finished and released a sigh as if that ran took up most of his energy. But it also came with a wave of relief that he got all of that out of his chest.
However, Aidan stood still and stared at his son, absolutely speechless with his mouth hung slightly open. He was shocked at everything Micah said. It striked his soul like a sword, and now he had no idea what to say to his son.
"Micah I—"
Micah didn't stay to hear his excuses, so he turned around and went to his car.
When he got home, he went inside and slammed the door shut behind. With his keys, he started twirling the key inside aggressively while grumbling. He thumped against it and when he turned around, Mariana staring at him from the couch.
He wasn't in the mood to talk, so he just shot upstairs. Meanwhile, Mariana's eyes followed him like a trail as his footsteps thundered in her ears. She had only just finished cleaning and baked a small cake. Now she was chilling in a low-cut tank top, when she heard the door rattle violently like someone wanted to break in.
She wanted to say something, but he was out like lightning. So she hastily followed up the stairs to their bedroom which was slightly open. She entered and he was undressing.
"Hey," she quietly muttered and knocked on the door to get his attention. He was currently putting on a shirt and didn't notice she was there.
"Are you feeling okay?" She slowly walked in, making baby steps.
"No."
"What happened?" She came to his side and placed her hand on his shoulder.
"I got into a little argument with Aidan," he revealed while not facing her. He then stood up and his pink lips dropped into the hardest frown she's ever seen.
"Oh I'm sorry. Poor thing." She reached out and caressed his cheek. She felt bad for what he had to go through and regretted that Micah said he didn't need her there. For she wished she could've been to console him and keep him calm.
Even though he wasn't in the mood, he tilted his head along her palm. It felt tender and soothing, making him feel better as if she was his home.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Mariana asked more quietly.
"No," he said and detached himself from her. He put his clothes away as he was finished. He sighed and sat on the bed. The bag, which still had the documents, was laid on the floor, a remainder of what happened earlier.
He started rubbing his arm as Mariana sat on the bed with him. She winded her arms around his torso and pulled his heavy body towards her smaller frame.
"If your upset, I got a cake downstairs for my special baby. If you want, we can eat it outside and you can tell me any news? We don't have to talk about Aidan at all."
Micah glanced at her, unsure at first. But as long as they didn't have to mention Aidan, then he was okay. But that whole conversation did hurt and was painful to
have to endure for that long.
"Okay, let's go have your cake." He forced a smile on his lips as Mariana hoisted him off the bed. As one, they trotted out of their bedroom and down the steps. She went to the kitchen and got the cake out, as well as some wine glasses with champagne.
They went to the backyard and stepped into the sunny columns. Mariana had her sandals already on, and she could feel the light heat up her toes. She made her red nail polish twinkle, and continued to lead Micah deep into their own sanctuary.
They selected a spot in the middle and sat down, crossing their legs and getting in touch with the frizzing grass. Mariana made a deep sigh of happiness as her face felt like it was touching the sun. She could feel the tiny droplets of warmth sinking into her rosy cheeks, that were like red, sweetened apples.
"Ah, perfect!" Mariana exclaimed. She brought out the cake and settled it in the middle. She gave a wineglass to Micah as they were going to be using that instead of their hands.
"Okay, ready?" She said, adjusting herself so she was sat directly opposing from him.
"Ready," he replied, trying to sound as enthusiastic as possible. She held up the glass along with him. They dipped them into the frosting and scooped themselves a slice. The glass was now stained with the romantic shade of red, the frosting slid down, creaming around its goodness.
"So, what went down at Wendy's?" Mariana asked. She tilted her glass, making the cake slide into her mouth.
"So they linked the number to someone called Pamela. They think she's the one Mona was working with."
"Really?" Mariana said, her eyes widening with curiosity.
"Yeah, they are still getting more information, but should get back to us soon."
"That's good." Mariana nodded along to the good new. It has greatly brightened her mood as they were a step closer to finding their kids.
"So I'm not going to ask what else you talked with... him." She awkwardly waved her hand as to hint on what she was getting at. He understood, but his response was downing his cake, hoping they won't go too much in detail about it.
"But I really think I should come with you next time Micah, just in case if things become too much for you." She stretched out her arm and stroked his knee. "I'll be there for you like your always there for me."
Micah silently listened to Mariana's words. He didn't want to admit it, but she was right. Seeing Aidan today brought up too many bad memories and him asking if he could be apart of their lives again, was enough to make him rage.
"Yeah your right, I'll bring you next time with me. But what really gets me angry is that he can't seem to see what he's done is not right. That's what gets me most angry."
"I know it can be frustrating," she said, and her head drooped to his shoulder. But we can get through this together, okay?"
"Okay Mari." He chuckled a little.
"Good! Now let's enjoy our little picnic!" Mariana said, happy that he was cheered up. They continued eating while catching up on each other's day.
