Chapter 23: Getting Help
The next morning, Micah and Mariana parked outside his father's company which was currently owned by Mason.
Mariana looked at it as a glimmer of hope. She smiled and then turned back to Micah who stared at it with dread. His head leaned towards the front. It felt heavier than usual as he refused to make eye contact with the building. He groaned but Mariana lifted his chin.
"Hey it's okay, I'm right here with you," she murmured, "it will be okay, you just have to go in for a few minutes to talk with your brother. If you want, I can come in with you to give you support." She caressed his cheek, and her chocolate milk eyes stared lovingly into his forest ones.
"No it's okay, you stay here," He patted her thigh and then kissed her on the cheek. "I'll be fine. Your too precious to me."
"Alright." Mariana let him out and watched as he walked towards the entrance. She started laughing and shook her head. "Four years later and he still doesn't want me around his brother," she mumbled to herself.
Micah walked into the immense building. His frown expanded as this was the last place he would want to be. He hated being in here. It reminded him of all that pressure his father had put on him all those years back. But the company did have a great influence so they could likely provide them with some assistance.
He breathed in to calm himself down and then went to the receptionist. She recognized his face and directed him to the CEO's office. Micah took the elevator up there and saw the various floors where people walked to their different departments. They looked like tiny ants on the crystalline tiles as the sun rays shone down from the done-shaped crystal roof.
This place hasn't changed one bit he thought to himself.
Once he got to the top floor, the doors opened and he stepped out. The doors to the office were just opposite him, and it felt like they were mocking him like Mason used to. Just stood there with their dark oak, all menacing looking.
He was about to grab the door handle but halted. For a second, he could overhear his brother's voice on the other side. It sounded like he was talking on the phone, and it made him grumble, because of all the arguments they used to have. He still felt like punching him whenever he provoked him with Mariana. But he let that feeling settle as he opened the door and saw his brother sitting at the desk.
"Hi Mason," he said, as calmly as he could. Even though inside, his blood was already boiling.
"Micah?" Mason looked up slowly. His eyes peered over as he muttered his name in confusion, "is that you?"
He bore a bewildered expression. He wore a navy suit and his hair was styled in waves with a nice fade, and a gold watch across his wrist.
"Yeah," Micah responded and then sat down directly in front of him.
"How are you? Long time no see." Mason smiled as he wasn't expecting this.
"Fine," Micah replied dryly. He crossed his legs and his arms as he stared gravely at his brother. He tried to be still, but the sight in front disgusted him so much that he was trying not to shake with fury.
"You and Mariana doing okay? Are you still together?" Mason asked as he grabbed his coffee and swished it a little.
"Why do you care?" Micah angrily blurted out and thumped fists down on the table. He hated the mention of Mariana's name coming from Mason's mouth.
"Chill out man, I don't mean any harm." Mason raised his palms in defense as he consumed his coffee. He set it down and then cleared his throat. "I know you still hate me, but I mean that for real this time."
Micah shook his head to calm himself down if he really wanted to get this over and done with.
"No, not really..." Micah mumbled without looking directly at him.
"Oh, what happened?"
"Our kids got kidnapped at DisneyWorld, and we just want some extra help in finding them."
"You two have kids?" Mason said with a hint of surprise.
"Yeah, we do." Micah grinned as he thought of the kids he shared with Mariana. It made this decision much easier if it meant getting them back as soon as possible.
"Nice. So you want some help in getting them back?"
"Yeah if you can."
"Okay sure. I'll help in any way I can." Mason then got the phone and started dialing some numbers. "By the way, how's mom doing?"
"She's fine, but why are you asking me? Don't you still talk to her?"
"Not exactly. Ever since she found out what I almost did to Mariana, she has refused to talk to me unless I change."
"Really?" Micah snickered a bit. He wasn't expecting that but it was still amusing to hear still suffering from the consequences of his actions.
"Yeah." Mason sighed with remorse. His eyes traveled towards the floor as he avoided eye contact. "She cried and then threw me out." He fiddled with his fingers awkwardly.
"Wow Mason, you really made your own mom cry," Micah mumbled in disappointment.
"I know, I'm not proud of it," Mason muttered and his eyes gazed towards the window in shame. "I have really changed though, but she still refuses to believe me."
"Can you blame her? Even I'm finding it hard to believe you..." Micah stared cautiously at him as his tone lowered in disbelief.
"Yeah I know it may seem hard to believe at first, but it's true." Mason rubbed the back of his neck as it burned with embarrassment. "This may not mean much now, but I am sorry for all those years of tuanting you, Micah. And I'm also sorry to Mariana."
"Oh... alright," Micah muttered sarcastically and then got up. He had enough and felt like he had done his best. So he made his way to the door but was stopped when his father appeared through the door.
He froze as his jaw hung open but Aidan looked twice as speechless to see his son.
"M —Micah?" Aidan stuttered like he had seen a ghost. "W— What are you doing here?"
"His kids got kidnapped so he wants some help?" Mason replied.
"Wait, really?" Aidan turned back to his son but his eyes flared with fury towards him. A dark shadow cast over them, highlighting the hidden anger that was soon about to blaze out.
Micah looked up at him, but only for a second because he couldn't stand to see the face he both resembled and resented the most.
He then shoved past him and was about to head out the door when Aidan grabbed his shoulder.
"Hey wait, why are you in a rush to leave? Let's talk." Aidan tried bringing him back, but Micah flung his hand away from him.
"What is there to talk about?" Micah's words seethed through his clenched teeth. His fist shook, and his body started vibrating with flames of anger rising. "You've never wanted me as your son. You've got your golden boy right there like you wanted!" He said and pointed at Mason.
"But that's not true Micah. I love both of you, and I have missrd you," Aidan said. "When I came home and you weren't there, it left me very confused. Then your mom came back the following week, and told me that you just got married in Miami which left me in quite a shock."
"Yes the wedding was very nice without you. And since then, it always had been without you in the picture!" Micah shouted and then stormed out. He took the elevator down and when he was at the main reception, he found Mariana waiting there with worry.
"Micah? Are you okay?" She came up to him and stroked his cheeks.
"No..." He muttered without looking directly at her.
"What happened? You didn't get into a fight, did you?"
"No, but it nearly turned into one..." Micah mumbled. He sniffed as he leaned on Mariana.
"I'm sorry, vita mia. But I'm proud of you for coming here, even though it was very difficult." She caressed his back as she felt some tears drip onto her shoulder.
She pulled away him so that he could look at her while she spoke.
"Do you want to get ice cream?"
"Alright."
Mariana then led him out quietly, and they got into the car. Micah stayed silent throughout the whole drive. Seeing his brother was bad enough but seeing Aidan was his limit.
Mariana drove them to an ice cream parlor, and they got some scoops in a tub. Mariana had vanilla with chocolate sauce, and Micah had cookie dough. She took them to a park, and they sat on the bench to eat.
"If you're comfortable enough, can you tell me how the conversation went?" Mariana asked slowly with caution in her voice.
Micah sighed and took a bite before answering. "I just asked if he could help find our kids and agreed."
"Oh wow, well that's good that he wants to help."
"Yeah, I guess. He also said he changed, but I don't believe him one bit," Micah said firmly and stabbed the ice cream with the spoon.
"He said that?" Mariana raised an eyebrow as she looks at him. "Are we talking about the same Mason here?"
"Apparently," Micah said and Mariana started chuckling.
"Also, Aidan was there," he muttered.
Mariana dropped her spoon and her lips froze.
"You mean your father was there? Why?"
"Maybe just to check up everything was in order? I don't know." Micah said as he shrugged it off.
"Aw, that must have been unpleasant for you," Mariana murmured with sympathy.
"It was. He wanted to talk but I just walked out.
"Yeah, it will be too painful to face him right now," Mariana said and finished her ice cream. She put it into the trash and held Micah's hands.
"Do you want to go for a walk? Y'know to clear your head?"
"Okay, my Mariana." He also threw his tub away and then together they walked down the path amidst the calming silence.
