Chapter 54: Making the Most
After surviving an epic hangover, Mariana and Micah were on their way to a ranch for the afternoon. There was still plenty of snow so they were going to have a snowmobile tour through the White River National Forest.
They walked past the long branches, with the blue hue of the mountain peaking out in the distance. The thin layer of snow had a pattern of footprints as it crunched under their feet while some slipperiness sneaked in, making them slip a little. They did manage to arrive in the area and saw a row of snowmobiles next to this small house.
They joined a couple of people and shared one snowmobile with two seats. Micah was in the front, while Mariana sat at the back and eagerly wrapped her arms around his waist. Her head leaned on his shoulder as they put on some goggles and a helmet.
"This will be interesting," she said, rubbing her cheek against Micah's.
"Yeah," he said, turning the mobile on as they started moving a little.
"What do you think we are going to see?"
"Maybe some animals or interesting plants."
"If we do, I want to get a picture of it." She patted her phone in her pocket.
Once they moved along with the group leader, Mariana held onto Micah tight as the snow squirted upwards from the ground. They rode along the terrain, lumps of snow formed around like ice cream, which mirrored the mountains that were behind the large forest that they approached.
"We going in there?" Mariana asked with curiosity.
"Yeah I think so," he said as he followed the group along.
Mariana was thinking of what they will see. She would like to see some animals like deer and others. She was a bit sad that this was their last day here, but she had fun regardless.
They entered the woodlands and rode through the bits of grass that peeked their heads through. They drove through the yellow-painted glade, with the trees springing out on the edge, and a steep hill ran on the side. They heard the humming of the birds, the sharp chirps of crickets, and the air filled with nature and greenery.
Mariana took pictures while holding onto Micah. She preferred the calm atmosphere to the chaotic one of their preceding night. Here, she was able to think things through and to live in the moment of where she was.
She sighed and relaxed onto Micah's back. Feeling like she could get lost in this sanctuary of this world; while the leader of the group was explaining what wildlife was around.
They stopped at a luscious-looking waterfall, it's waters reflected rainbows as it streamed down from the cracks of rocks. There was snow dripping like dew, from the drooping leaves.
They stopped for a rest at the lake, and Mariana and Micah jumped off their mobile. He got her hand as they walked closer to the lake that was dark and elegant like turquoise. The area was secluded by the trees that surrounded them. Their leaves glowed like a shooting star, caused by the sun.
They crouched just where the tiny waves kissed the land. Mariana looked into the clearness of the lake that was like a mirror into another dimension. She saw her reflection clear as day and as gorgeous as the sky above her. Her curls dangled all over the place, like the branches of a tree stretching out for light. She saw the tiny dots that her eyes made, and when she touched them, they rippled away playfully.
She smiled at herself, for she was satisfied with the way she looked right now.
Micah's face then appeared beside hers, and that made her smile broaden. She touched his reflective cheek and even felt some fishes nipping at her finger.
"You look so beautiful," he said, sitting next to her and tickling under her chin.
"Heh thanks," she said, "this may be my top favorite place that we have visited."
"Really? It does seem nice and quiet here," he said, having a good look around their surroundings.
"Yeah, that's why..." her voice died down as she leaned on his shoulder, staring at the water.
They looked at themselves while listening to the calm whistling of the wind as if it was singing a melody into their sweet ears. They saw the sunlight make the trees' shadows dance along with the sandy patches and the quiet chatter of their group. Even though not a word was said, they enjoyed each other's company, as if this was the place they needed to be in this moment. Sometimes silence was just the right thing to enjoy the beauty of life.
When it was time to go again, they got up and went back on their snowmobile. For the rest of the trip, went over a long bridge that had a huge valley view next to it. Thousands of trees all lined up like swords, the clouds were puffed up like cotton candy and descended down the landscape. They then soon arrived at this little cabin that was tucked away in the mountains.
Everyone got off and they all sat around a table that was designed with metal. Their leader began grilling up some fresh beef on the barbecue. They saw the fire blaze around the grill, making Mariana a little excited seeing crimson flames dance around like a beautiful, blossoming flower that had this enchanting trance to it.
When Mariana got her cheeseburger, she bit into it and a loud moan as she tasted the juiciness coating her tongue.
"Ah, this is so good!" She moaned again. It was probably one of the best burgers she's ever tasted.
"I know, it tastes so fresh," Micah said, munching into his.
"You know, when we get back home, we should one day have a barbecue at your house," she said.
"Yeah, I'll be the one cooking."
"That's good because I'm only eating your food." She smirked.
"I know." He laughed and rolled his eyes. She really was his biggest fan.
She smiled and leaned on his shoulder. She finished her burger and ate more as they enjoyed the view. She saw the snowy peaks of the three pyramids, and then the rest of the colors consisted of brown, and green-tinted with a fade of blue. A few mountain goats were walking across and she could see everywhere much better now than they were higher up.
When their group went back to the ground, Mariana and Micah walked around the streets for a bit. They came across an old-fashioned taxi that had bright, party lights flashing from inside. Mariana peeked through the window, arousing her interest.
"Can we go see what's inside there?" She asked, tugging at his arm.
"Alright, it does look kinda fun," he said.
They knocked on the door and were let in. They were greeted with a friendly smile by the young man that was sat at the front. He had a piano in the front seat, with speakers, a small disco ball, and squiggly lights wiggling all over the roof.
"Hello, you two! Where are you off to?" He asked with a big smile.
"To our cabin!" Mariana exclaimed.
Micah gave him the address and they were soon on their way. They were entertained by the man playing on a microphone and multiple songs on the piano keys. Smoke came from under and filled the back like a fog had come in. Mariana bobbed around in her seat, her hair swayed around as she was enjoying herself like she was at a concert.
Music played from the speakers, a rollercoaster track appears on all the screens. They suddenly saw themselves at the front and it looked like they were going up and down on a coaster car. The man made the car accelerate and also brake, making the backseats rock like they were on a rollercoaster.
"This is fun!" She screamed, holding onto Micah as they tumbled around the place.
"I know right!" He said.
They took some selfies with the lights glowing around their faces. They sang along until they were at their destination.
When they got back to the cabin, they went upstairs and into the bedroom. They flopped down on the bed, letting out one last, hearty laugh. They just had the best ride of their life and were now exhausted.
Once the air died down in their lungs, they laid there and stared up at the ceiling. Their day was now completed, they went skiing, they saw some fabulous sights, and now they can go home in peace, with their relationship renewed.
"I enjoyed coming up here to Aspen, it's been a memorable experience," she said. She then rolled over onto Micah's chest and wrapped her arms around him, her handheld onto his shirt tightly while her head laid on his hot chest. It made her feel safe and comfortable like nothing was going to happen while she was in his arms.
Micah ran his fingers through her hair, kissed her forehead, and sat up a bit. Their room was very quiet with only the blissful sound of the wind blowing through the window.
"How have you been Micah? How is everything at home?" Mariana asked. She realized she had not asked him about that in a long time, and wanted to check up on things.
"It's alright Mariana," he said and fiddled with her ear. Even though he was shocked that she asked that question, but he did appreciate her concern.
"How's your cooking going, and working at the restaurant?" She asked as she started caressing his face.
"I'm loving it so far. I feel like I can express myself by making food and the different ways of doing it. It's the only thing I'm good at and that I enjoy, so being inside that restaurant makes me feel like I belong there and that's my purpose. And when I finish a new dish and see how much people like it, I get this rewarding feeling for my hard work." he said, his eyes lighting up as he spoke about it.
Mariana noticed the passionate tone residing in his voice, and it made her happy to see him talk this excitedly about something he loved doing.
"I'm glad to hear that." She sat up properly and bent down to his face. Slowly, she went down and kissed his lips as a strip of tear ran down her cheek. "I love you, Micah, please don't feel disheartened because of your dad, you're doing really well and I'm gonna be with you every step of the way." She wished his dad didn't treat her baby so unfairly, especially since he had such an unmatched, self-sacrificing heart.
"Thank you Mariana, that means so much to me." He cuddled her, squishing her face into his chest as he patted it. He tried to hold back tears, but when you feel like you had no support, even from the ones that were supposed to be closest to you, as soon as it comes, it feels like an inch of hope shimmering in your life, telling you not to give up through your trials.
After laying there for a few minutes, a thought popped into Mariana's mind. "Micah, can I ask you a question?" She said, rolling off him.
"Sure, as long as it's not something like 'would you still love me even if I was a table with no legs?'"
She chuckled at how silly that sounded. "No, nothing like that."
"Okay. What is it?"
"What do you think you would be doing if we never met?"
"Um I'm not actually sure," he said, looking down as he fiddled with his fingers. He never thought of that, what their lives will be like if they never crossed paths.
"Would you have been in another relationship?"
"Maybe, maybe not." He shrugged. "After Electra, I was put off dating for a little bit but when I got over it, I was still a bit cautious."
"Yeah I don't blame you," she said, looking up at the dull, brown ceiling, "me? I would probably be dead." She chuckled lightly.
"Oh Mariana, don't say that."
"It's true though," she said, giving him a quick glance. He looked away, thinking about what she said, but she just hugged his arm with a warm smile.
"My savior..." she mumbled as her eyes started to feel heavy. She didn't want to fall asleep yet but her body betrayed her as it slowly sunk into the bed as well as into sleep.
"Goodnight my Mariana." He kissed her forehead and then drifted off into sleep.
