Pebbles are not supposed to vibrate, are they? Windows shouldn't glow all shades of neon in the dark, either. Most of all, people aren't supposed to be screaming and laughing so hard you could hear it from blocks away, let alone doing so at this hour of the night. Well. Too bad I was about to associate myself with said people.

The night was cold, and pitch black. In the midst of the darkness, merely lit with some flickering street lanterns, stood this enormous castle of a mansion, pulsating to a heavy bass. Pebbles crunched under the soles of my sneakers as I got closer to the place, guided by the smell of smoke and alcohol. It brought back memories of Miami and its alleyways filled with scents like these, ones I'd been so glad to get away from.

I couldn't exactly make out a front door —or, I don't know, entrance— but I could see a massive rectangular pool, lit up bright blue and surrounded by people. Smoke curled around the scene, luring me in with its seductive presence. This was a terrible idea. Grass made way for a smooth cement, drenched in chlorine and beer. Beneath the thick blanket of smoke, no starry sky was visible anymore. There was no going back now.

For a last-minute party, it was insanely crowded. The poolside had at least thirty people hanging around, and I could see the patio buzzing with unfamiliar faces. Foldable tables stood against the wall opposite the pool, piled up with keg stands of red solo cups and punch bowls containing suspiciously bright liquid. People I'd never seen before were laughing and drinking, jumping into the pool, and screaming like cavemen. This is so not my scene.

"H— hey! Y-you're suuuper c— cute." Some blonde girl I'd never seen before slung her frail arms around me, body covered in nothing but a particularly revealing green bikini and smears of.. paint-? Her eyes, covered by fake lashes holding on for dear life, were hazed up behind a layer of intoxicated fog. She hiccuped again with a high-pitched giggle. "My boyfriend—," another hiccup, "broke up w-with me. I'm single!" she shrieked, shaking her head around like some sort of maniac. When one of the multicolored lights struck her face, it perfectly highlighted the tear streaks staining her face. Oh.

I bit my lip, now fully supporting the girl's weight because she could barely stand on her own. "I'm uh— I'm gay. Sorry 'bout your boyfriend, I guess-?" While my hands did their best not to drop the poor girl, my eyes were busy scanning the area, trying to find Jackson. Of course, he was nowhere to be seen.

The girl giggled again, big green eyes staring at me with an expression I couldn't quite read. "You're going to Hell," she stated simply, same giddy smile on her face. Just then, the music turned up even louder, fading from some random song to another random song I didn't know, in a language I didn't speak. Something about being drunk, or whatever. The girl gasped, jumping out of my arms with a shriek. "I looove this song!" she exclaimed, throwing her arms in the air with a little jump before crashing into the pool.

Well, that solves my problem. I had to hold back a snort as I watched her come back up and laugh loudly, unaware that everyone else was laughing at her.

The music was so loud that it functioned more as a vibrator for the walls rather than something pleasant to listen to. I couldn't even hear it anymore. Sound waves pulsated through my skull, dousing out any annoying thoughts still lingering around there.

Being tall does have its perks. I could overview the poolside above all the wasted faces, quickly calculating the fastest way to make it through without crashing into too many people. It took me a while (people kept moving around), but eventually, I found some sliding doors and slipped inside, where the smoke was even worse.

All I could see were painted neon bodies grinding against each other, making out against the walls, or downing cup after cup. Multicolored lights flitted around the space, highlighting everyone in pure rainbows. It hurt to see, but at the same time I couldn't really feel anything anyway.

"Sorry— excuse me." I kept throwing around meaningless apologies while writhing around the tight crowd, inhaling heaps of smoke and heavy cologne. The smell of fresh air had been long forgotten by now.

Finally, some prick shoved me hard enough to leave me bruised and I got launched into what almost looked like a lobby. A grand, bifurcated staircase with golden details stood on smooth marble, illuminated in neon lights and more tables piled up with alcohol. There weren't as many people here, almost as if they'd abandoned this part of the mansion. Music bounced from wall to wall, colors around me fading to dark blue.

I glanced around and saw Jackson strutting down the middle flight of stairs, flocks of multicolored lights dancing around his usually dark hair. Instead of his usual school uniform, he was dressed in a white blouse, darker dress pants, and.. sneakers. His eyes found mine and widened greatly. "Blue!" he called out over the thumping bass, fastening his pace.

"Hey," I said once he was close enough, suddenly a little relieved to have a familiar face around here. "This place is crazy big." I want to go home.

Jackson chuckled and nodded, slinging an arm around my shoulder. Why do people always do that?!  "Sure is. Say, have you had a drink yet?" He began to stir me towards one of the tables, smiling and waving to everyone we passed.

"Oh—" I swallowed. Of course they're going to expect you to drink at a party, dumbass. "I don't uh, I don't drink."

Pursing his lips, Jackson gave me a disapproving shake of his head. "'Course you do. It's not going to kill you, hm?" He pressed a red cup filled with god knows what to my chest. "Drink up."

No. I tensed my jaw, nose scrunching up at the disgustingly bitter smell. The clear liquid bounced in surrounding circles, clashing up against the cup's rim and back into the middle. This music is way too loud. "I—

"And I thought you'd be different."

"Fuck it." Placing the cup at my lips, I let the liquid glide down my throat right as Doja Cat began to blast through the speakers. The bitterness burned down to my stomach, setting my insides on fire until it soared right up to my brain, racing around to turn off the switch in my head. Everything fell quiet and all I had left was the realization this night could actually get pretty fun.

A pleased smirk twisted onto Jackson's lips. "That's my blue eyes," he said in a low voice, shooting me a quick wink while pouring me another drink. "Let's have some fun, shall we?" His long fingers coiled around my wrist and off we went, into the neon night.

-

I couldn't remember when I ended up here, but the pool's chilled water felt nice on my burning skin. My eyes would cross anytime I tried to focus on anything, so I had just stopped trying. Girls in bikinis were all around me, quite literally hanging at my shoulders with their slicked-down hair and pink lips. It was funny how they kept flirting with me even though they all knew I was gay. I told them. Or at least I thought I did. It didn't matter anyway, my brain felt too fuzzy to care.

"Sooo, Robin. Do you h—" a brunette hiccuped, "do you have a girlfriend?"

I took another big swig of whatever some asian girl had put in my cup and laughed. It wasn't actually funny. "Nah, I'm like— suuuper gay." I tried to flick my wrist, but my hand was still underwater. Oh. That was funny. It made me laugh.

The brunette giggled and swam over to me, leaning onto me with her hands on my chest. "Then, do you have a boyfriend?"

I pouted. "No...."

Some other girl burped, tossing away an empty can with furrowed brows. Her arms awkwardly leaned on the pool's rim. "So like, do you even like anyone," she hiccuped, "then?"

Glancing into my red solo cup, I noticed it was empty. Ugh. Not again. This had been happening since the beginning of time, the bitter liquid always ended up gone. I groaned, swinging my cup around for emphasis. " 'S empty."

The brunette gave me a sympathetic nod and then laughed, twirling a drenched lock around her finger. "Answer her question and I'll give you a refill," she said, a mischievous sparkle in her big brown eyes.

I shoved her chest away from me, sending her flying into some other girl. Why were there so many girls? "You're mean." Her blackmailing ass wasn't appreciated, but then again, my cup was empty. And I already missed the tingling sensation in my mouth. "F—," everything turned black for a split second, "fine. But it do— doesn't matter 'cause he hates me anyway. I like—

"Robbie! God, I've been looking for you everywhere."

Throwing my head back, I saw Jackson but like, upside down. His frown looked silly. I giggled. "Hiii."

Jackson's frown got even worse as he sighed and massaged his temples. He snapped his head up at the girls. "What in the world have you lot been giving him-? Last time I checked he was slightly tipsy off some beer. What is this?"

Oh. wasn't this good?

The asian girl hiccuped, furrowing her brows. Why's everyone frowning? "B-but you said—

Shaking his head, Jackson yanked at my shoulders, dragging me up out of the pool. "Come on, Blue. Let's get you out of here."

The water dripped off my body, glowing bright blue in the pool. As soon as I felt the concrete under my feet, gravity began dragging at me, music pulsing through my skin. It hurt. Liquid swirled around my stomach with every step I took, pulled along by Jackson's strong grip. "H-hey Jack—" I swallowed, "—son-? I don't feel.."

Someone crashed into my ribs and no words were left in my mouth. The music was too loud for my voice, anything I'd say evaporated into dust before anyone could see my lips moving. I was trapped, in the pulsating music. Shit.

After some more body shoving, we made it to a deserted corner where Jackson pulled me closer to shield me from all the people. His back leaned against the wall, dark-brown hair slightly messier than usual. "So, blue eyes. Been enjoying the party?"

The music turned heavy, multicolored lights darkening to dangerous shades. I couldn't speak. Jackson's face was blurry, a still-point in the suddenly spinning room. My skin burned, tightening around my muscles.

You can always text me. Or call me, or anything.

"Fuck," I groaned, pain coursing through my entire fucking body until I could barely breathe. Everything hurt, everything was blurry, and nothing could stop moving. Seth. I had to talk to Seth.

"You like that, hm?" some drowned-out voice said, followed by another thrust of pain piercing through my skull. Far away in my nervous system, I could sense a faint pressure somewhere on my leg. It burned like fire against my skin, stinging harder with every passing second.

"N-no. I have— please. Leave. I want to—" I gagged, this time with much more force. I want to pass out. "— leave."

The pressure on my leg stopped, and I saw Jackson's silhouette move around. "Are you sure? You can...             ...bedrooms here, too. .... not a problem."

What? I couldn't hear a fucking thing, as if someone had shoved my head underwater until my lungs gave out. "No," I repeated, carefully shaking my head in the hopes of not activating more pain.

A sigh. "I'll...          ...outside,     ..." Two hands dug into my skin, sending fire through my body and it burned so bad, I felt tears pooling up in my eyes. Like a magnetic field, the ground tried to pull me down, drowning me further in the throbbing bass and curls of smoke until nothing else was left.

"I don't think this a good idea, Blue. Are you sure you want to leave so soon? You look... rather pale."

Things appeared to clear up again once that oxygenless place opened up for more breathable proximity. The night sky was pitch-black, stretched out tight across the horizon with little white specks smoothed out in flowing shapes. I could've gotten lost in it forever if it weren't for the horrendous pain coursing through my body. I need to apologize to Seth.

I glanced at Jackson, whose face I still couldn't see clearly. Trying to focus on it only made my headache worse, blurry shapes twirling around my eyes and poking their sharp knives into my skull. "I'll be—" liquid crawled up my throat as I hiccuped, "I'll be f-fine."

Narrowing his eyes, Jackson exhaled with his arms crossed on his chest. "Call me if you need anything." With that, he sharply tuned around and slipped back into the throbbing mansion, disappearing behind curtains of smoke. I didn't even have his number.

Everything hurts. A cold breeze wrapped itself around me, sending shivers to my aflame skin. It was now that I realized the sticky, freezing cold material clinging to my body was a t-shirt, drenched and dripping with chlorinated pool water. I'm so fucking cold.

My feet felt like dumbbells, dragging themselves across the concrete sidewalk with small, painful steps. I didn't have a place in mind, I didn't have anything in mind. Nothing but thick fog and flashy memories throbbing in my field of vision. I couldn't go home. Aleksia hated me already and she'd definitely kill me if I showed up like this.

Seth hated me too. He thought I was different. But apparently, I wasn't. I still didn't understand why he hated me or what I'd done for him to think so but I just knew he did and it hurt and I had to make it right. It felt like little hammers slamming against my heart. Not like the snake. The snake would only come back if I thought about it too much, which was okay because I couldn't think anymore anyway.

Guided by softly flickering street lanterns and the fading of those vibrating pebbles, I decided to follow the song of the sea. It lapped back and forth in infinite loops, no matter the time of day.

"And I thought you'd be different."

Another sharp dagger sliced through my skull, causing me to gag and wince. Where the fuck am I?  Nothing made sense anymore. The concrete didn't feel like concrete and neither did the sky look like a sky. I couldn't tell where the sky began or when the lights in the distance turned into stars. Everything blurred together into one nauseating mess and I couldn't feel my body anymore.

Within all the blurriness, I noticed one bright spot on the left of my vision. It lit up neon blue, curling in cursive lines that most likely made up some... words. Another shiver ran down my spine, coiling my muscles so bad I almost collapsed onto what I assumed was a path, but it might've well been the goddamn sea for all I knew. Seth. I need to find him.

I'd managed to drag myself closer toward the neon lights and discovered a doorbell next to them. The vines behind the big vitrine looked so familiar yet my mind remained completely empty. I knew where I was. Everything hurts. It hurts so bad.

"Robbie-?" some muffled voice called from behind the glass, their voice familiar. Seth. I heard some shuffling and then a click. "Robbie. Fuck, I was so worried about you, I've called you like ten times! Are you oka—"

I gagged again, this time clutching at my stomach as more pain shot through me. "I—" Everything went black, concrete slipping away from my shoes. I'm so fucking scared. I'm sorry.

Two strong arms wrapped around me, dousing me in the calm scent of jasmine. "Woah, hey, I got you. Jesus, what the fuck happened?" he hissed, sniffing my shoulder. "Have you been— uhm, have you been drinking..?"

And then I was crying. Tears streamed down my face, sobs ripping from my chest so hard that I couldn't breathe. "I— I-I'm sorry. I— Everyone h—" I hiccuped, "hates m-me." I can't do this.

Seth's grip around me tightened. "I don't hate you," he murmured, free hand gently stroking my back in those same patterns he'd done last time. "And I'm so sorry if what happened earlier today made you think otherwise. I shouldn't have snapped at you. You could say I was.. having a bad day too."

That made me cry even harder, breathing nearly impossible. I tried to gasp, begging my lungs to start functioning again, begging my body to stop feeling like this. Begging for the pain to stop. "I c-can't—

"Hey. Focus on me, yeah?" Seth pulled away, hands firmly placed on each of my shoulders. Blond strands fell around his face, highlighted blue by the neon sign. "Slow breaths," he instructed, slowly nodding along as I tried to mimic his breathing. "Just like that."

Around you, it's so easy to breathe. Finally, everything calmed down. The burning, the throbbing, the spinning, it all began to slip into darkness. Earthy eyes were covered by black blotches, slowly invading all of my vision.

"Mom?! I need he—"

Everything went black.
