Chapter 8 Burgling All Cat-Like

Skulking from shadow to shadow Selina moved slowly down the corridor she hid in.
She had a plan. Get in, follow the route she laid out, get the diamonds then slip out a window and get to the streets.

Simple, easy and straight forward... 'Well it should have been.' She thought sourly as the laughing echoed from the party downstairs. Which her contact conveniently forgot to mention would be going on as she was breaking in. She'll be having words with that idiot when she gets this job done.

Reaching the end of the hallway Selina crouched in front of the last door and began to pick the lock. She was halfway there when a door opened behind her, the sound of a toilet flushing signalling the person's arrival. 'How the hell did I not hear the toilet flush before the door opened?!'

Pulling out her tools quickly and stepping behind the opened door. 'Okay, fifty-fifty chance, either they close the door without looking back or they turn to close it.' Selina held her breath as the door moved and looking up nervously she saw the face of an admittedly handsome guy in a tailored suit who jerked back in surprise when he spotted her.

"Uh, shit." She said.

"Wha-" Selina pounced not giving him a second to respond. She pushed the guy to the ground and gripped him by the hair. Lifting his head off the ground she pulled her fist back and brought it down in a quick move that took all of four seconds. She laid his head gently on the ground and dragged him back into the bathroom and propped him up on the toilet. So if anyone finds him they think he just passed out while puking and hopefully leave him to his misery. Glancing up at the walls she saw that they were soundproofed, hard to spot if you haven't seen the same thing a million times before. Selina wondered how many murders and affairs happened in this bathroom with no one the wiser. Considering this family its probably a lot.

Rushing back to door she picked up where she left off and when she heard the telltale click of lock releasing she twisted the handle and stepped inside closing the door behind her.

She stepped forward silently in case anyone decided to slip away and marvel at the ridiculously expensive jewels and artefacts held in this gallery. Selina took a moment to gape, awestruck at the sheer size of the room she was in. 'It's bigger than my goddamn apartment!'

Shaking herself out of her stupor she moved to where she knew her target would be held on display. Walking briskly to end of the room she punched in the code for the steel-reinforced door to the much smaller room holding the diamonds and few other items she might pilfer, just for fun.

She smiled happily as she looked at the diamonds resting in the display case encompassed by others just like it but holding different jewels and artefacts much more valuable than everything in the other room.

Cutting a hand-sized hole with her clawed gloves she reached in and gingerly lifted the necklace out of the case. Giving it a quick once over Selina noted the shining black metal with sliver inlays winding through the material. The main part of lace was a vaguely horn-like shape with small attachments and patterns engraved. Which all trailed down to the shimmering diamond which would lay on the chest. Very noticeable, good for showing off. Should fetch a nice price. Quickly it was stached in her satchel and she turned to the door.

With a satisfied smirk and a greedy glint in her eyes hidden by her goggles. Selina stepped out of the small room and she froze  up as she heard a slow clap begin.

Begrudgingly tilting her head up to get a view of her spectator she found several gunmen waiting to shoot her and the guy she knocked out earlier cradling his probably broken and definitely bleeding nose pinched between two fingers. He looked peeved. The woman standing next to him had her arms folded over the silver dress she wore as she had stopped applauding Selina and despite her praise, she looked decidedly unimpressed.

"Let me guess, back against the wall?" Selina asked regaining her composure as she did prop herself against the wall. "Hands up?" She raised her hands placing one over the other and opened a small concealed latch in her sleeve pressing the button hidden inside. 'Now, how to keep them talking...'

"Hands apart!" The woman ordered interrupting Selina's thoughts.

"Oh, you want me spread out do you?" She replied silkily but with unmistakeable warning behind her tone.

The woman smiled. "What did you take?" She demanded harshly. 'Well now I know who's in charge, girl power.'

"You're all business aren't you? No fun at all. I remember when the Falcone were fun. The rivalries, the power plays. Then Fish and Penguin decided they wanted more. And look what happened. Your hiding. You used to be crime lords, now you're two-bit politicians and socialites. How far you've fallen." Selina  surreptitiously tapped the side of her goggles and a timer appeared in her vision.
'Forty seconds? Someone's not doing their job.'

She left her place at the wall and began to wander the room idly admiring the collection while keeping an eye on how likely it is she's going to get shot. Seeing how livid the sister looked and how outraged her brother was well, if she wasn't surrounding by so many lovely trinkets she'd be shot and buried in the yard under the roses by now.

'Maybe red will kill them with the bush they'd bury me under... Nah she'd probably be irritated that she lost someone to look after her plants while she was gone doing - whatever plant women do... Oh ten seconds.' Selina moved to stand in between two of the many windows that lined the walls and towered over her.

"Eight," Selina said the guns lazily pointed in her general direction snapping to attention. "seven, six, five," She continued with a put-upon sigh.

"What are you doing?" The Falcone sister questioned.

"Waitin' for a guy. You?" As soon as that last syllable left her mouth the window to her right burst inwards, glass littering the floor. The black figure that busted in stood from the crouch he landed in and turned to her.

"Took you long enough." Selina criticised despite the perfectly dramatic timing.

"I'm not at your beck and call." The slightly robotic voice responded.

"I'd love to poke holes in that desperate little theory of yours but we have bigger problems. Or should I say you do?." Selina asked in a stage whisper as she jumped out the now open window. She rolled to a stop when she hit the ground. Looking back up to make sure she wasn't being followed and when she heard the gun shots Selina thought it safe to assume that she was in the clear.

She ran out of the estate and when she snuck into an ally she pulled a black trash bag from inside and cut it open to reveal the backpack inside. 'Can't be too careful, don't wanna smell like a dumpster.'

Once she was changed and had her suits annoying habit of giving her helmet hair tamed. She left the alley and walked home.

__________

Selina hates Croc with a passion. Well, not really. She just hates the places he insists on doing business in, with a passion.
This time it was a big, empty, draft filled warehouse. She was waiting inside hugging her jacket closer. At least the face mask she's wearing is keeping her face kinda warm.

She heard a clatter coming from the back room. She was a second from pulling out a gun before Croc walked through the doorframe."Jesus, Croc you scared me."

"Sorry." Was the empathetic reply as he stopped a foot from her. "You got the necklace?" Straight the business then.

"When have I ever not delivered?" She questioned pompously.

"I can think of a few." Croc said with a smirk, or a snarl. You can't really tell sometimes.

"Extenuating circumstances." Selina said flippantly as she pulled the necklace from her satchel and handed it over. Croc took it and held it in his hands a lot gentler than she thought possible. He held it up high, turning it this way and that. "Satisfied?" She asked annoyed.

"Almost." He said as he lightly tapped a claw on the diamond centrepiece. "Now I am." He pulled a jewellery box from his crocodile skin jacket and placed the necklace inside.

"Where do you find buyers for this stuff anyways?" She asked as Croc handed over a wad of cash as payment.

"I'm a smuggler. There's the usual things like drugs, weapons then you get to the good stuff. Booze and jewels. You wouldn't believe how much a good decanter of scotch goes for. Where there's demand I need supply. You're my supplier."

Before Selina could answer, the door to the warehouse opened behind her. Being the brave and fearless person she is. Selina immediately bounded behind Croc.

"Well, well what do we have here?" The woman announced as she walked in. Her goons fanning out behind her, guns at the ready.

"Celia." Croc growled unhappily.

"Croc." She acknowledged as she walked further into the warehouse. "I'm almost sad to find out your behind this. We worked so well together."

"Me and Cat work better." He snarled as he pulled two handguns out and aimed them right at the Falcone bitch.

"You brought guns?!" Selina asked scandalised. "Don't you trust me?"

"I came alone and I'm not assuming that you lead the Falcones here that's trust enough and don't think I missed that piece your hiding." Croc said with a pointed look at her waist where there was a pistol of her own resting.

"I only brought one!" Selina countered

"Enough!" Oh right. We're in trouble. Selina whispered to Croc as 'Celia, muhh' droned on.

"You got a plan." She assumed hopefully.

"Yup." Good, wait!

"It doesn't involve the sewers does it? Please say it doesn't." She pleaded.

"It has nothing to do with the sewers." Croc said unconvincingly. Selina is not pleased.

"On three?" She said stepping slowly from behind him, gun in hand.

With an affirmative grunt. Croc adjusted his aim for Ceilia and the left wing of goons. Selina aimed to the right.

"One-two...three!" Selina yelled as she and Croc back-pedalled with a constant stream of fire. Running out of ammo just before diving into the back room Croc came through before.

When she was on her feet Croc already had the manhole cover in his hands tossing it back to sail over her head and slam into one of the goons pursuing them. Hopping in before more could follow Selina rolled as she hit the slimey - eww - stone of the paths that lined all of Gotham's sewers. On her feet and sprinting ahead turning at every possible turn until something leapt out of the murky water into her path. Selina immediately swung her foot to connect with its face but instead it was caught in a hand.

"Now that's rude." Croc said in his usual drawl.

"Jesus." Selina said as she breathed heavily and deeply from the marathon she just ran. "You, need to stop scaring me like that! Then maybe I won't be so rude!" She hissed spitefully.

Croc grunted dismissively as he turned with a gesture to follow. After walking in perpetual silence for just long enough for Selina to become uncomfortable with the 'drip-drop-plop' of water and the squeaking of rats. She decided to strike up a conversation.

"Sooo..." She began thoughtfully, trying to come up with a non-confrontational topic. "When you said you and I work better, what exactly did that mean?" Oh of course yes. Perfect Selina well-fucking-done.

Thankfully Croc has very devil-may-care attitude. "The Falcones need me cause I make them money, I don't need them because I make more than enough without them. The difference with you is. You don't need me."

"Aww, but you need me?" She asked in high-pitch fake sweet voice. Croc snorted in amusement.

"Nahh, but since we don't need each other. We need to stay in each other's good graces. If we're gonna keep doing business. With Falcones I got the power." He explained.

She hummed in interest. "So where are we going exactly."

"No clue." Selina was about lunge at him when he began chuckling.

"What?"

"We're going to your apartment. Or as close as we can get through the sewers."

"Oh." She said intelligently. Her anger diffusing.

They continued on, mostly in only slightly uncomfortable silence on Selina's part. Which led to some interspersed conversation.

Around an hour passed before Selina was crawling out of another manhole into an alley. She already had her leg half lifted out before she looked back down at Croc below her.

"Wait, earlier you said we're going to my apartment. How do you know I live in an apartment? Better question. How and why do know where my apartment is?"

"Technically that's two questions." Was the only reply as her foot was grabbed and then pushed so she basically rolled out of the hole into the alley. She turned back to the sewer entrance to see it was already closed.

"Damn it." Selina growled as stomped the cover blocking the entrance. Selina grumpily climbed through her apartment window only to be greeted by Bast. Her Egyptian Mau. Staring at her like she knew she could've died tonight and she did not approve.

"Don't give me that look I gave you fresh tuna last night." Selina said in attempt to rebound from being scolded by a cat.

Bast turned away flicking her tail dismissively, pawing open Selina's bedroom door, three more cats appeared to greet her rubbing themselves along her ankles as she walked past.

"They only love you for your food Selina never forget." She says it like a mantra daily. But there was that one time Batgirl broke into her old apartment and she got assaulted by all the cats that were holed up in there. Barbara had many bandaids the next time she saw her. Selina almost felt bad but she was too busy laughing.

Obviously she moved as soon as possible and the only cat that followed her here was Bast. The rest were new.

She had to fight the urge to name them all Immediately. But the rule is wait six months and if your still in same apartment then you can name them.

That was the rule. But the ginger Tabby that showed up in her first week here is secretly named Oliver. She's a thief, she breaks rules for a living.

Plus that movie was awesome.
