22. not you
taehyung watched as jimin's eyes grew double in size, his mouth hanging open. "what?!"
taehyung shrugged. "i just... it's like i've met him for the first time again- i see him in a completely different way now. i was confused, ever since that party-
"you know what happened?!" jimin blurted out and taehyung eyed him confused. "yeah, gguk told me everything.."
"wait, wait, wait- he did?!" jimin's shocked expression confused taehyung to the core. "it's not that tragic, i know i'm clingy."
jimin stared at him for a while, then squinted his eyes. taehyung would've never react this way unless jeongguk hadn't tell him the truth. "what did he tell you?"
"i cried and begged him to never leave me and for some reason, i told him to call me babyboy.. why?"
jimin looked down and then back up. "that's all?" taehyung eyed him confused. "all? is there more i should know?" he asked in a demanding voice.
jimin attempted to answer the question when taehyung's phone suddenly rung. pulling the device out, he saw that jeongguk was calling him and picked up. worry brightened in him though as jeongguk asked him to come to the dorms instantly, because he had to tell him something important and just hung up before evaluating what he wants.
"what's wrong?" jimin asked and taehyung still looked at his phone. "ggukie asked me to come to our dorms, because he has to tell me something important. it sounds urgent."
jimin looked at him with a concerned look, heart feeling heavy as he exactly knows what jeongguk is going to tell him. "okay, let's go then."
when the two boys arrived in front of their dorm room, jeongguk was waiting outside of it, scrolling through his phone. he looked up though, once he noticed taehyung and jimin were coming. his heart thudded wildly against his chest when he locked eyes with taehyung and noticed his new hair colour that made him look even more ethereal than it did before. "hey..." he greeted quietly as he hugged taehyung and then jimin.
"so... what's up?" taehyung asked and jeongguk and jimin exchanged a look, before jimin spoke up. "maybe i should leave you alone, if you need me, i'm inside," he said, before opening the door with his keys and entering.
taehyung was beyond confused at the aura that was swimming in the air, something a little suffocating and definitely not right. "tae, let's sit down somewhere and talk," jeongguk offered his hand to the younger male, who hesitantly took it. "you're scaring me."
they began walking. "it's scary. you look beautiful with black."
taehyung blushed, squeaking out a 'thanks'. "but... what you're going to tell me... is it bad, or good?"
jeongguk sighed, when they turned to the left, about to leave through the entrance of the college. "however you want it to be. it actually lies on you..."
taehyung noticed that jeongguk was deeply concerned and serious. "you're really scaring me now, jeon."
"i'm scaring myself, kim." arriving on campus outside, they sat down on a bench next to a big tree.
"so?" taehyung asked, now also feeling nervous. jeongguk hesitantly pulled the letter he had received a week ago out of his jacket pocket and handed it to taehyung, who looked at it with furrowed eyebrows. "what's that?"
"i want you to see it yourself, i don't know how to tell you." that had taehyung just worrying now. he took the letter from jeongguk's hand and skimmed it, eyes growing wide and heart literally beating out of his chest. "th-this.."
jeongguk leaned back. "my real parents died in a car crash.."
taehyung looked at the letter again, "i-i'm so sorry, ggukie.."
"it's okay, it's the first time i've heard of them anyways. read further angel, there's more."
taehyung did so, heart only speeding up even more. "c-ceo? you?"
sighing, jeongguk nodded. "they had their own company...and they never erased me as their heir. apparently, they were the ones that brought me to the orphanage, in hope of someone adopting me and for me to be able to live a normal life. grow up like a normal kid and so on. they were scared of not being able to raise me with their job and thought it's better to give me away and even checked up in me from time to time, without me knowing, which is fucked up. they even had contact to namjoon's parents. everyone kept this a secret, i am actually the son of one of the richest persons in south korea."
taehyung stared at him, not knowing what to think. "th-that's amazing. i'm glad they didn't just leave you like that." he slowly hugged jeongguk. "how do you know all of this? it doesn't say in the letter."
"the son of friends of my parents had called me the other day. he explained everything to me." jungkook sighed.
taehyung looked at him surprised. "you... you knew that for a long time?"
nodding, jeongguk softly held onto taehyung. "i didn't know how to tell you that i suddenly get offered to be the ceo of a huge company," he chuckled lightly and taehyung slowly looked up. "you're taking the offer?"
jeongguk hesitated. "i... i don't have to, but i wanna know more about my parents, how they were and how they lived. and.. i have no plans for the future anyways, so getting offered such a well paying job is... amazing."
taehyung hummed softly against jeongguk's chest. "it is. that's such a great opportunity for you jeongguk."
"it's not easy though.." he looked down, softly brushing his hand through taehyung's hair. "i will have to leave seoul for that and go to busan."
taehyung's heart finally shattered. at first it was just the thought of jeongguk having to leave college and then the thought of him having so much money, he probably was going to move out anyways. but not him having to leave the city. leave taehyung.
"wh-what?" it was a mere whisper, something that sounded so broken, so exhausted. jeongguk pressed his eyes tightly together. "i'm so sorry, bub.."
taehyung cut off from the hug, his eyes filled with burning tears now. "y-you promised to never leave me.."
"i know... th-that's why i wanted to ask you, if you... if you would come with me to busan. i wanted to ask jimin too-
"jeongguk, jimin just escaped his father from busan. you can't expect him to leave seoul again when he just arrived and i-i... i don't think i could leave seoul just like that either.."
jeongguk gulped, holding tears back. "i.. i guessed so..."
taehyung closed his eyes as the first tear also rolled down his cheek. "y-you won't leave me, right? you'll stay?"
jeongguk bit his bottom lip and looked down. "i... i thought a lot about it, tae. i-i need to know what.. my parents were like and if there was really more to the story, i... i'll have to leave."
taehyung's world literally shattered in thousands of small pieces. "h-how.. you promised it, y-you always said you'll never leave me! you l-lied?"
jeongguk hugged taehyung tightly and the younger cried into his chest. "i'm so sorry, taehyung, i-i have to-
taehyung pushed himself out of jeongguk's hold, his view was blurry by the tears and the disappointment engulfing him. "g-gguk... please.. don't leave me. not you.." not when taehyung had just figured out his feelings for him, not when this is something jeongguk always promised him.
"tae, try to understand me- i-i can finally know where i'm from, hear about my parents..." he took taehyung's hands in his. "i am going to visit you every weekend, i-i'm gonna try to do everything so that we're seeing each other as often as possible, i'm-
"more empty promises? how are you gonna handle that? you will be the owner of a company, you'll have responsibilities and more shit. you will probably be occupied for the whole first year with just learning how to lead a damn company! where do you want to take your time from then?! you won't... w-we won't be able to see each other.." taehyung loved how warm jeongguk's hands were feeling around his, how safe they made him feel.
this safety, this reassurance is something he wants to treasure forever and never loose. his eyes landed on jeongguk, who was also crying softly and taehyung realized that he dislikes leaving him just as much as taehyung does.
maybe... taehyung has to finally grow up and learn to let go. this is jeongguk's chance to get to know his past, to build up a future. taehyung's selfishness can't be a burden to jeongguk, not when he deserves a faithful future.
so the best thing he could do was hug jeongguk tightly, softly cry against his chest.
no hesitation was shown, before jeongguk hugged taehyung back as tightly.
"promise to call me everyday, yeah?" taehyung forced a smile onto his lips as he looked up to his best friend.
of course jeongguk noticed the way the smile wouldn't reach taehyung's eyes, but he still tried to smile back. "i promise."
promises are meant to be broken though, aren't they?
