Chapter 34- Most Important

I Regret to inform you that this is indeed the last chapter... Once again, you should let that sink in before you continue on because this chapter will play on many of your emotions. Good luck.

**********************

I'd sent a message to Cassie and was now on my way to her house. I'd told her I had something she would most definitely want to hear.

I knew she was a fan of any mate pairing that made the step to unite, and I knew this wasn't going to be any different. She would probably squeal when she heard how his father had backed down as well.

I didn't bother knocking at the front and I just walked straight in.

"Cas!"

I heard her footsteps above me and in record time she was down the stairs, her eyes aglow like it was Christmas or something.

"Tell me, tell me, tell me."

Cassi was jumping up and down like a little girl. I think she knew what I was about to tell her, but she wanted it confirmed.

"No wait. My room, then tell me."

She took off running up the stairs like a jet and I followed after her with a roll of my eyes.

When I got up to her room she turned back toward me.

"Sit. Tell."

I laughed and sat down getting ready to tell her almost the whole story.

"Alarik's father changed his mind."

I thought my ears were going to bleed with how loud the squeal was. It was probably the loudest I'd ever heard from my friend. Ever.

"Oh my goodness. You mean he's letting you two be together then? There's no arranged marriage for 'the better of two packs' anymore?"

"Nope. He's not being forced to marry an Alpha's daughter. Instead he has to stuck with little ol' unimportant me forever."

"Oh honey, to him you are not unimportant. You're probably the most important thing."

I felt my cheeks heat up at those words because I couldn't really believe how that was true. I mean how in the world could I be the most important thing to anyone? Especially a person who was destined to be the Alpha of an entire pack.

"I don't know about that," I mumbled.

"Oh you most certainly are."

In that moment when I looked at the glint in my best friend's eyes, and I considered her words right now, and compared them to what she'd said last time I was here, I felt my heart swell for her. She'd given up hope on mates. She saw the problems I'd gone through, granted those at the beginning were self inflicted, but she saw all of it, and it had made her lose hope on the magic that she believed mates were.

She'd tried hard to hold onto that, but when it seemed like there was no light in the dark for Alarik and me, she'd started to wonder if all of it that she'd learned, all that she'd felt about mates was a lie.

With my revelation now, I saw that hope, that spark in her returning. She was back to the giddy friend I had when I first discovered Alarik was my mate, and for that I couldn't be happier. I couldn't believe that my experience had nearly changed her entire view of what this was. And I was glad that she was back to her old self, because her own birthday was coming up in just two weeks.

"I do realize, but do you realize who you are to him? You're the woman who showed him what he'd been doing, you're the woman who made him want to become better. If that right there doesn't prove how important you are, then I don't know what does. You very well could have turned him from an Alpha like his father to one that takes the good of everyone else in mind."

I felt my body react to her words and I couldn't help but believe him. Alarik had gone through some pretty drastic changes within the past month in order to try and make this work. There had been many ups and downs, and yet here he and I were.

"Cassie, I have something else to tell you," I said with a smile and that look in my eye that she knew all to well.

"Oh my gosh. You didn't." The words were followed by another squeal.

"So not only are you together, but you were— together?"

I just nodded and laughed. My best friend, able to tell her anything, and I was sure glad I could. If I hadn't had her, I wasn't sure who I'd be able to talk to about the whole ordeal that had just happened. Then again by talking to her, I nearly ruined her views. I was glad everything had worked out though, for both of us.

"Did you let him, you know."

I pulled my hair to the side and showed her my neck. Two neat little puncture marks that were already barely visible.

Another squeal.

I was most certainly going to need something for the impending headache if Cassie kept this up.

"So does this like mean you're getting married now or something?" She asked bouncing up and down.

"Whoa there. Slow down with all that. He hasn't said anything about marriage. This all just happened last night."

"But he was getting ready to marry that Alpha's daughter. Surely the two of you could work something out. Wait, how did she take it? The Alpha's daughter I mean."

I scrunched up my nose.

"I'm not sure, but I can only imagine not well. Alarik had said she told him she wouldn't back down from all this when he'd talked to her last week. I can't say I'm terribly surprised. Think old Alarik with a bitchy hormonal female side."

"Oh shit. That's not good."

"No, but there's nothing she can do now. I mean he and I are together, and his family approves of it."

Just then I felt Alarik connecting with me, the link between us stronger now that we had mated. I could also tell he was trying to keep the majority on his end closed besides the words he was saying.

Allison, I was hoping you could come over here. I had something very important I needed to ask you.

My brow crinkled at his words. Something very important? I tried to focus on his end, seeing if I could feel or hear anything else from him, but that was it.

Uh sure. I'll be there in a few, but what is it?

You'll see when you get here. That time I was hit hard with something else. I could feel something else leaking through the bond with his words and those were three powerful emotions. Excitement, nervousness, and love.

I had a guess at what those three emotions meant right now, and I wasn't sure if I was hoping to be wrong, or right.

"Hey Cass. I have to go talk to Alarik."

"Who am I to stand between true love. Go on you crazy fool, go on!"

I rolled my eyes at her and gave her a hug before running out of her house.

As I walked toward Alarik's, I tried to pull on that connection between the two of us to see if I could figure out anything else, but all I found out was that he was purposfully trying to keep me out. This was one thing he didn't want me seeing in on and that right there was pulling my suspicions closer to my initial guess.

I felt my heart beat faster with the possibility of what his question might be and Cassie's words came back to mind, asking if we were going to get married. I'd laughed at her. I honestly had never even thought of marriage before, I never really thought that sort of thing was for me.

Was that what his question was? As my mind was stuck on that, I couldn't think what else he would possibly want to ask that could be as important as that.

I was nearly half way there when I heard something behind me, but before I had the chance to turn and see what it was, I felt a pair of hands gripping each of my arms. I thrashed around, trying to pull them free, but with one person for each arm I wasn't much of a match for them.

As my fear started to creep up I felt more of my wolf mingling with me and I could smell that they were both humans. Even with my strength I was a match for two humans when caught off guard. I wished they would have attacked from the front, then I would have been able to hand it to them.

"Is she really one of them?" I heard one man ask.

"Yes, I know she is. Now get her in the van."

I felt my heart slamming against my rib cage. One of them? Did they know about werewolves? I wasn't sure how considering we never mixed with them, at least we didn't do it very often. We kept our distance from them. The only time I'd even seen a human was when Alarik had taken me to that dinner.

I tried pulling harder this time. I wasn't afraid of hurting these men, if it meant me getting away from them. I didn't know what was going on, but for some reason they were looking for a werewolf. I really didn't want to find out their reason.

As I thrashed harder I heard one of them men curse and grunt. Then, I felt a sharp pinch in the side of my neck and blackness started to seep into my vision. I fought against it, I knew I couldn't let it take me under because if it did there was no way I could call to Alarik, there was no way I would be able to get away from these men. If I let the blackness take me, I would be defenseless.

It was like I was looking through a tunnel now, and my body had stopped pulling against them. I felt everything going numb, like my brain couldn't tell it to work anymore and I wasn't sure what this was. Not just any drug worked on us, especially not unless it was a higher concentrate. Even if they did work, they wore off quickly.

Unless they were only taking me a short distance, this was going to wear off while I was still in close quarters with them.

Unless they knew of something I didn't.

As the last bit of light started to dim from my vision and my brain started processing slower, I hoped to the gods above that my initial thought was right. That this would wear off shortly and I'd be in the van with them, ready to take them out when I woke up.

Then the darkness pulled me fully under and all thoughts stopped.
