I grab a new batch of wood and carry it over to where Darry Curtis was standing, hammering away. I had been working with Darry since maybe the start of the month since my parents told me about their money problems. It was boring and sometimes hard work but there's no one better to do it with than Darry.

There are many reasons working with Darry is the best:
1. Darry never stops. He keeps on topic and things get built way faster when he's around.
2. He's polite. That's something that's hard to find around here. It's also a bonus that Darry's just a likable person in general.
3. If I'm honest, he's kinda cute. Not only his looks but even what he does. He mumbles to himself when he's not making full-on conversation with me. The way he smiles when I help him out. Even the way he talks about his two brothers, Sodapop and Ponyboy, is adorable.

I walk over to the boy and he smiles, "y'know, Y/N, it's way past the ending for your shift."

"I know..." I shrug. "But, I thought I might as well just finish this up with you."

"Well, that's sweet of you," Darry nods, heaving up another board into place. "Y'know, you could come over for dinner tonight since you're stayin' late with me. Sodapop and Pony would be thrilled to see you."

Sure, I've met his two brothers. They're cute kids. Ponyboy has this dreamy look in his eyes 24/7. Sodapop just loves... Well, everything.

"Sure, Yeah," I grin. "I would like that."

"Cool!" He says, a little too loudly and he cringes back. "I mean.... cool..."

We finish up a few more loads and say goodbye to the few other people who were helping us out. As we walk down the street to the Curtis Residence, every few steps Darry would get closer to me. To the point where our fingertips were brushing together. I looked over when it first happened to see his face with a slight tinge of pink to his ears. I couldn't tell if this was because he was blushing or if he was just getting a fresh sunburn. Which were not uncommon in our field of work. But it seems to be a little too light for a sunburn. So, I just smiled up at him. When we got to the door, Darry opened it for me politely.

I curtsy, "thank you, monsieur." I walk in and he walks in right after me.

Inside was six boys, all of their eyes glued to the screen that was playing an old Mickey Mouse cartoon.  I only immediately noticed two of the boys, Ponyboy and Sodapop, who were squished in-between the rest of them. The other boys... I've seen their faces before. In a picture Darry has shown me with his 'gang.' These boys had to be Dally, Johnny, Steve, And Two-Bit! When Darry steps inside and shuts the screen door, their heads snap back to us.

"Darry!" Sodapop grins. "There you are! Oh, hey, Y/N! I didn't know you were coming down!"

"Soda! Pony!" Dally groaned in anger. "Didn't I tell you to at least start dinner by the time I got back?"

"Sorry, we got busy," Ponyboy blushed in embarrassment.

"Busy watching Mickey?" I grin.

"Hey, that's an important event," One of the boys, actually wearing a Mickey Mouse shirt, speaks up.

"And why is just about everyone we know here?" Darry groans even louder.

"Well, Johnny wanted to come over for dinner first," Ponyboy said. "Than, Two-Bit decided to tag-along to watch T.V. here. Next thing we know, Steve and Dally wanna come too cause everyone else is goin' along! So, here we are!" Darry sets his hands over his face and sighs.

"Speakin' of..." One of the boys in a leather jacket said. "Ain't this the girl you're always talking about, Darry?"

"Oh, yeah!" Another one in a jean jacket spoke up. "You always talking your head off about how cute and strong they are."

Darry's face reddened, "I have no idea what you're talking about."

"It sure is!" Sodapop stood up and walked over to where Darry and I were standing, ignoring what his brother said. "This is Y/N L/N! She works with Darry here building houses, but we all already know that." The boys murmur in agreement. "Y/N, this is Dally, Two-Bit, Steve, and Johnny. You already know Ponyboy and me." The boys nodded or waved a little when their name was called out.

"It's nice to meet you all," I smile at them and they all grin back.

Darry sets his hand on my shoulder, "Y/N? Could you help me in the kitchen?"

"Oh, sure, Darry," I nod and follow him into the kitchen. In the other room, the boys were heard laughing their heads off.

Darry takes some vegetables out of the fridge and a knife out of the drawer, "I'm sorry about them. They can be so childish." I stay silent for a moment. "Is there something wrong? They didn't offend you, right?"

I take a deep breath and plainly blurt out, "Darry, do you like me? Like they said you do?"

Darry almost drops the knife right onto his foot but luckily catches it, "uh, well... you see... uh..."

"It's a simple yes or no question, Darrel," I take the knife out of his shaking hands. "Do. You. Like. Me?"

"Fine, okay, yes," he gives in, turning to hide his face. "I very much so like you. I was actually planning on confronting you about it in a week or so but...  now's okay too... I guess."

I quickly stand up on my tiptoes and plant a kiss on his red cheek, "I knew it."

He holds his cheek before turning to me with a big smile on his face.
