Kimmon's POV
After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, a nurse approached us to ask, "Who's the guardian of Copter Panuwat Kerdthongtavee?" Copter's mom stood up and said, "I'm his guardian, I'm his mom."
"Please follow me," said the nurse.
We followed her to a row of elevators in the middle of which she pressed the arrow up button. We stepped inside the elevator that she entered. I saw her press the number three button. "He is in room 333," she said.
The elevator dinged open and we stepped out of it with her. We turned right on the hallway and after a few steps she stopped in front a door that said 333 on it. My heart was pounding wildly in my chest. She opened the door and motioned for us to enter the room.
I held back my tears as I saw my Copter lying pale and wan on the hospital bed with his eyes closed. His mother approached him first and hugged and kissed him on the forehead. Kannika followed suit and did the same. Copter's mom motioned for me to approach him. I did not hug nor kiss him in case his childhood sweetheart got offended. Instead I took his hand in mine and squeezed it gently. "Everything will be alright," I bent to whisper in his ear. I felt his hand move slightly in mine.
I told Copter's mom that I was going to leave first. I was going back to the shoot to see if I could still catch it before it ended. I put my palms together and bowed to both Copter's mom and to Kannika. I stepped out of the room and closed the door softly behind me.
I felt my tears start to well up in my eyes as I walked down the lobby. In robot fashion I pressed for the elevator, rode in it, stepped out into the lobby, stepped out of the building and made my way to the parking lot. I drove my car hoping not to get into any accidents along the way. I stepped on my brakes with a loud squeal when I realized that I almost hit the bumper of the car in front of me. That earned me a loud honk from the car behind me.
"Focus, Kimmon, focus," I scolded myself. Finally I reached the building but I was told at the entrance that the shoot had wrapped up and that everyone had already left.
I went back to my car and rested my head against the wheel. That was when I finally let go. I felt my chest heaving as I sobbed and sobbed until I stopped from exhaustion. I did not know what to think anymore. I was afraid to drive myself home. I already had a near miss earlier. I might not be lucky this time.
I searched for Bas' number on my phone and ringed him.
"Hey," he said, "how is P'Cop? The rest of us are planning to visit him in the hospital tomorrow."
"Bas," I said tiredly, "can you come get me? I'm back in the parking lot of the building where we had our shoot."
"Wait for me," he said. Thankfully he did not ask any questions. I really have to credit Bas for his ability to discern when to just be quiet and just give me the comfort of his presence.
In a few minutes I heard him tapping at my window. I unlock the door of the passenger car and let him in.
"How did you get here?" I asked.
"I took the taxi because mom was not available to give me a ride," he said.
I rested my head on his shoulder and suddenly my sobbing started all over again.
"Hey, hey, hey," he said, "please don't tell me that P'Cop is in critical condition."
"No," I said between sobs, "he's okay, he had a successful appendectomy and is now recovering in his hospital room."
"Then why are you crying?"
"His childhood sweetheart was there with his mom!" I wailed, sobbing endlessly.
"Did you know that he had one?" asked Bas.
"No, he never told me." I cried, but a little bit calmer now.
Bas made a move to step out of the car. "Wait," I grabbed his hand, "where are you going?"
"To get my father's gun. I had warned him at the beach cottage that I would put a bullet hole in the head of anyone who breaks your heart."
