Chapter 11
Kimmon's POV
We arrived at the beach a little past eleven. Luckily our cottage was close to the entrance but farthest from the beach, but still the proximity to the entrance made it easier for us to go back and forth to our cars to unload our stuff in the cottage.
The inside of the cottage was surprisingly spacious but there were only four single beds and one folding bed. We did rock paper scissors to decide who would take the folding bed which was narrower than the single bed and of course did not have a mattress.
Copter winced when he lost to the final match of rock paper scissors. "Tell you what," I said to him, "my blanket is double layered with soft down in between the layers. I can use it as a cushion for the folding bed and you can use my single bed."
"No," he said, "everyone won fair and square including you. Let's just stick to the original arrangement, but thank you for your kind offer."
"My offer still stands if you ever change your mind later tonight," I said.
"I'm hungry!" Bas announced, and started rummaging among the grocery bags and took out a bag of cheese puffs. I snatched it from him and said, "you're not eating that as your first meal of the day." He pouted but I put my foot down. "Look, there are some ham and cheese sandwiches in that plastic bag sitting beside my duffel bag. Eat those first."
"You want one?" Bas offered Copter who was looking at the sandwiches. He hesitated but I announced that I had made enough sandwiches to go around so he took the one that Bas handed to him. I mentally kicked myself. I should have been the one who offered him the sandwich and not Bas. Well, the day hasn't ended yet, I told myself, there was still time for me to find ways to be more attentive to him.
"Where's P'Tae and P'Tee?" asked Bas.
I looked around. The two members of our group had disappeared.
"Wait," said Copter, "I think they brought the cooler to the shed closer to the beach. P'Tae had mentioned that there was a grill that was part of the amenities of the resort where we could grill the meat and the squids."
"You guys stay here to finish your sandwiches while I bring the food stuff and the rice cooker to the shed," I said.
When I got to the shed, P'Tae was already trying to make the fire going under the grill. Tee was standing beside him with his arm around P'Tae's waist. They didn't hear me approach and when I announced that the meat and squids for grilling was there, Tee jumped and rushed to my side to take the packages from me. Am I just imagining it, or did his ears turn red at my appearance?
"I was gonna go back to the cottage to get the other stuff," he said defensively, "I just got distracted."
"I'm not saying anything," I said. Actually I was itching to say, yeah, you got distracted by P'Tae. I bet you got a thing going for him.
I was about to go back to the cottage to get the other food stuff and the drinks but just then Bas and Copter arrived carrying them.
"I got the fire going," P'Tae annonced, "who wants to volunteer to grill the meat and squids?"
"I can do it," I offered, at the exact same time that Copter raised his hand and said, "Let me do it."
"Let's all three do it," declared Bas. Shit, Bas, this was gonna be my chance to have some alone time with Copter. Copter was looking at Bas with an expression that looked like he was having the exact same thought as mine.
Oblivious of anything, Bas was already ripping open the plastic wrapping and took out a piece of meat and laid it gingerly on top of the grill. He jumped when a spark from the burning coal jumped and almost hit his face. "Careful," I said, "don't stand too close to the grill."
The rest of the day went by with us alternately eating, drinking, singing, exchanging jokes and of course swimming. I was swimming with Bas and Copter while P'Tae and Tee stayed in the shed drinking beer and finishing the rest of the grilled stuff.
I was enjoying the feel of the waves lapping around me when suddenly Bas yelled, "P'Cop is having leg cramps!"
