Chapter 9. Nerves and Anxiety
Sonia hit the answer key, before even thinking through anything.
"Hello?" Sonia said down her phone line.
"Hello, Sonia? It's Ody. How are you?" His deep, rich melodious voice came through the phone line.
"Not that fantastic, if I'm one hundred percent honest." Sonia answered him, albeit a bit shakily. "Things have gotten even crazier around here, a-a-and, I-i-i'm struggling."
"I can tell," Ody said "You're stuttering, and you honestly sound scared. I gave you my number before we parted last time. Why havent you called before now?" Ody asked her.
"You did?" Sonia asked. "I honestly have no memory of it. I keep waking up, in bed, with no recollection of how I got there. What can you do to help?"
I asked Ody.
Ody didn't hesitate to answer Sonia's questions, to the best of his abilities.
"I have been onto this 'Spirit' for years. He takes on the personality of those he possesses, and then uses his sway to make their friends, family and loved ones to do similar acts as him." Ody explained.
"So, how is he able to completely take over, repair or replace my phone so completely? It's becoming such a regular thing, I'm no longer sure I'm not doing it in my sleep." Sonia confessed to Ody.
Ody sighed, in deep contemplation for a few minutes before he said "I think, if it's ok with you... I'd better come over. There are some things we need to discuss and he takes over your phone - I think in person is our best option at the moment."
"Yes, of course." Sonia replied, again with no hesitation. "I'll text you my address, ok?"
After hanging up from the call, and texting Ody her address, Sonia paused.
"Why am I being so quick to trust this guy? This is so not like me! Focus on what you know, Sonia!" She thought to herself.
And then waited for Ody to arrive.
It had been about forty-five minutes, when there was a knock at the door. Sonia had been sitting quietly, on the couch attempting to meditate. Unfortunately for her, she had never really been that great at shutting her mind off, let alone ignoring the thoughts in there.
The knock on the door scared her.
So she jumped up, and ran towards it, ignoring her phone (having put it on silent after her conversation with Ody) and unlocking her front door, opening it to Ody's smiling face.
Again, just how handsome he was, struck Sonia. Not as odd, just as noticeable. His hair; jet-black, and looked to be thick and soft to her.
His eyes, a rich blue colour, but they seemed to be twinkling, ("Just for you" a voice whispered in Sonia's head. "No! I don't know this guy from a bar of soap! It's not just for me. Don't be ridiculous Sonia!" My own voice of reason was screaming in response.) as his easy smile was on his face, and eyes meeting hers in greeting. "How are doing? I hope this is ok, and not completely inappropriate? I'm sorry if it is. There's just some stuff you need to know, need to see. I have proof of who you're dealing with, please, may I come inside for a cup of coffee? Or even just a chat?" Ody's smile became ever so slightly hopeful
Sonia stepped back from the door frame, and said "Just this once. I don't know why I'm trusting you..."
Ody stepped in, and waited for Sonia to close the door. Sonia then led them both to the lounge room.
"Did you want that coffee?" She asked Ody, "I only have instant though." She told him.
"Yes please," Ody replied "A standard if you can, however it comes if not."
Sonia headed off to her kitchen to boil the kettle, and make two cups of coffee.
Feeling the unwelcome emotions of agitation and anxiousness, Sonia took her time preparing the two cups of coffee.
Pulling out two cups, making sure each cup got a good spoon of coffee.
Making sure her cup got one sugar.
Making sure Ody's cup got two sugar's.
By this stage, the kettle had boiled, so Sonia picked it up and made sure each cup got thoroughly stirred as the boiling water was added, and then pottered over to her fridge and grabbed her milk, adding a healthy dash of it to each cup, and stirring them healthily again.
Then, Sonia took 3 deep breaths before picking up the two cups, and heading out to the lounge room.
When she stepped into the room, her sharp intake of breath was what notified Ody that she had re-entered the room.
"Sonia! I'm sorry! It's... just.... you were taking so long, and basically, I figured if I set all my evidence and paperwork up in advance... once you came out, it would just be a case of sitting, and speaking. And then I can show you everything."
Sonia passed Ody his cup of coffee, and tried to clear her facial expressions and mind of anything negative before replying with, "Don't be sorry Ody, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have taken so long, this whole situa-"
Ody cut her off as he carefully placed his coffee on a coaster, on the coffee table and said "Please, don't be ridiculous! I've turned up here on short-notice, I'm putting you out - by all technicalities! So please, don't shy away from how you feel. If you're angry with me? Show it! Say so! Don't be shy! If you're hurting or sad, please, lean on me, talk to me or cry on my shoulder. You are not the first person to go through this, but, you will be the first person to go through this with my unwavering support. Please, Sonia, let me help you!"
Sonia chewed on her bottom lip as she made her way to her favorite single sofa in the corner of the lounge room, thinked as her feet padded across the floor, seeming to have come to a decision along the way.
"Ody, if you can help me, I would be in your debt!"
Ody smiled broadly and said "Well, why don't you show me this phone? I'd like to hear your story before I tell you mine, that way I can't sway you or your details."
Sonia nodded in agreement, and went to where her phone was left on charge.
"It's gone!" She exclaimed "and the charger, too."
Ody's face contorted into a picture of extreme rage, but by the time Sonia had done the double-take to see if he was and what had made him so angry, his face had relaxed and he simply looked mildly tense and a tad frustrated at the lack of a phone to look at.
"Are you ok?" Sonia asked Ody.
"Yeah, I'm good." Ody replied, follwed by - "Is there a semi-normal location that the phone would eventually turn up?"
Sonia paused before answering, and then said "I'll be back in a minute."
She walked into her bedroom, and sure enough... there on her bed-side table - was her mobile phone.
On charge.
With eight missed calls...
Ans twenty-four text messages...
Sonia gulped.
