East Haguenau, France
I sat on my cot, staring at the wall. Muck and Penkala's death played through my head. My foxhole was a few foxholes over from theirs. Muck, Penkala, Malarky and I were all close friends. I couldn't help but feel guilty. I had watched them die and I left almost spotless. Why them? Why did any of us have to die? What are we even doing here? What are we fighting for? I asked myself.
- Webster's pov -
I walked into the room we were sharing to see y/n staring blankly at the wall. It wasn't unusual for veterans to get lost in their thoughts. I don't know what happened during Bastogne but something definitely happened to her. I knew well enough the only way to help her was to get him involved. I walked into the hallway and to the common area where a lot of the men hung out. "Liebgott, I need you." I announce. He turns to me, his face contorting. "What is it Webster?" He asks. "It's y/n. Something's wrong." I reply. He nods and makes his way up to the room.
-y/n's pov-
I held my head in my hands. I wanted to cry, to let anything out but only dry sobs escaped my chapped lips. It seemed like the only sound in the world was the screams and shouts of Muck and Penkala before they died. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I jerk around, panting heavily. I relax as I see Joe. I turn back around, leaning against the wall. "Hey, y/l/n." He grunts as he sits down next to me. I just nod, letting him know I hear him. He sighed, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me in closer to him. "I love you." He mumbles into my hair. "Do you think Penkala is reunited with his mom?" I croak. "Of course he is. They're both in a better place." He reassures. "Are you sure they are? What if they're not? What if there's nothing. What if it's just an empty, horrible eternity." I retort. "Don't think like that, doll. You've gotta think on the bright side." He chuckles. "You promise when the war ends you're gonna marry me?" I ask. "I would get down on my knee right now if I could." He replies. "I love you, Liebgott." I sigh, resting my head on his shoulder. "I love you too, doll." He smiles.
