Jason's First Sit-In
"Is this normal?" Jason asked, looking over at Willie. "We just sit here and watch them practice?"
"Just about." Willie said, shrugging. "Their music's really good."
"I don't doubt that for a second." Jason said, smiling a bit.
"You said that my death reminds me of something one of your friends would do." Willie said, smiling a bit. "Which friend? Are they still alive?"
"As far as I know. He's... Extrememy reckless. Also kinda famous."
"Really?"
"You ever watch True Crime documentaries when you were alive?"
"A couple here and there."
"You see the one about Percy Jackson?"
Willie's eyes widened. "You're kidding me..."
"Nope."
"How'd that dude turn out?"
"As far as I know, he's still dating the girl who got kidnapped with him. He and Annabeth have been blissfully dating for about two years now. Should be in college, assuming that he graduated. I think they decided on UC Berkeley. Annabeth would be going for architecture, and Percy would probably be going for something sea themed."
"Why?"
"His whole life's essentially been sea themed. His mom and dad met on a beach, and then his dad got lost at sea. He'd probably do something to do with marine life." Jason said, then his eyes widened. "What month is it again?"
"Late August. Why?"
"He made it to eighteen." Jason said, his eyes filling with tears. "And his little sister should be born by now. I wonder if he and Estelle share any characteristics... Wow, it just hit me that I have a lot of questions..."
"Why don't you go see for yourself?"
Jason shook his head. His friends were all used to weird stuff by now. He wouldn't be able to hide. "Not a good idea."
"Don't you miss them?"
"Of course I do. It's just..." Jason struggled to say. "It wouldn't be a good idea. It'd do more harm."
"Why?"
"Trust me on this one, Willie. They would not be too happy to see me."
"What other friends do you have?"
"Well, there's my sister, Thalia. My female best friend, Reyna. My best friend, Leo, I haven't seen him in over a year. My... Um... Complicated, Piper. Frank, his girlfriend Hazel, and... And Hazel's brother. Nico." Jason said, realization hitting him in the head like a brick. "Oh no..."
"What?"
"I hurt Nico."
"What do you mean?"
"Nico's older sister, Bianca, she died when he was ten, maybe eleven. He eventually found Hazel, they share a father, but it wasn't exactly the same. There was a period of time where Percy and Annabeth... Went away on... Vacation, and I went to do something with Nico. He... He got bullied into coming out."
Willie's expression softened, concern filling his face. "What?"
"We had to get something, and the guy we got it from was demented and forced Nico to reveal who his childhood crush was in order to get it. I was confused for a moment when he said he had a crush on Percy, I eventually figured out what that meant, but after that day, I became his big brother. I threatened his boyfriend when they went out on a date for the first time. I made sure that nobody bullied him for being the way he was, not that anybody would. I didn't tell anyone what happened. It was Nico's thing to tell. What that guy did... It wasn't right. And Nico lost another sibiling figure." Jason explained, trying his best not to cry. "Gods, my death caused a mess."
"Gods?" Willie asked.
"God. I said God." Jason said, internally cursing himself out.
"Hey Jason, what was your home like?" Luke asked, setting down his guitar.
"What do you mean?"
"Where you grew up. What was it like?"
"That's the thing about homes, Luke. Home can be anywhere. I have multiple."
"Tell us about it." Alex said excitedly.
"It's... Hard to explain..."
"Would it help to put it to music?" Julie asked from her keyboard. "Helps me occasionally."
"I've never done anything like that before."
"It doesn't have to be good." Reggie said, smiling happily. "Just... Sing what you feel."
"That's a little harder..." Jason muttered to himself. After thinking for a moment, Jason looked over at Julie. "You know the song Legend Lake?"
"Yeah."
"Play the piano part." Jason explained, sitting down on the bench next to Julie as she started playing. The words came out rough, but Jason just went with it. "There's a legendary camp out on Long Island. I've heard stories of adventures out there. And there's some demigods who never quite stop talking, who spend their summers in a cabin they all share. And it smells like campfire mixed up with sunscreen. It sounds like the best time you've ever had. They say those trees are the prettiest ones you'll ever seen. And when you're out there life isn't so bad."
"Jason..." Reggie started to say gently.
Jason looked up at Reggie, noticing that his vision was blurry. He held up his hand, wiping his eyes. He had been crying. "Sorry. I swear I didn't mean to cry."
"You miss your home, huh?" Julie asked.
Jason nodded. "Both of them. That's just the first one that came to mind."
"What's the other one like?"
"Similar, but different. More strict and organized, but home nonetheless." Jason said, taking a deep breath. "I swear I don't normally cry."
"Jason, it's fine." Alex said, smiling at Jason. "Emotions are normal."
"Says the dude who literally cried for 25 years." Luke said, rolling his eyes.
"Leave me alone, Luke." Alex said, crossing his arms.
"What they're trying to say," Julie said, looking over at Jason. "Is that it's okay to be sad. It's natural."
"I'm just... Gonna go calm myself down." Jason said, getting off of his seat at the bench and walking outside.
"Wow." Reggie said once Jason was out of the studio. "Did not think that he would show that much emotion."
"REGGIE!" Everyone else in the room protested.
"I'm just saying! When I met him the first time, he was really chill. A little tightly wound, sure, but he looked like he needed a friend. He told me about his friends that were still alive, so I thought I could introduce him to some ghosts!"
An idea popped into Julie's head. "What if we find one of his friends and we take Jason to go see them? I mean, I'm the only one who can see ghosts, so it shouldn't cause that much harm."
Alex looked over at Willie. "You were talking to him. Did he mention any friends?"
"I know that two of his friends are in college right now."
"What college?"
"UC Berkeley."
Julie's eyes widened. "Did one of their names happen to be Percy?"
Willie thought for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah. How'd you know?"
"A new girl started at school today. She's a part of the art program, absolute sweetheart, but she mentioned that one of her friends, a guy named Percy, was going to be at UC Berkeley this year." Julie explained. "Percy isn't that common of a name. Maybe Jason and this girl knew each other."
"What's her name?" Willie asked.
"Hazel."
"Jason did mention that one of his friends was named Hazel..."
"I bet that they knew each other!" Julie said once again.
"So, what's the plan?" Luke asked excitedly.
"I'll invite Hazel over here tomorrow. Jason's coming tomorrow, right?"
"Speaking as though Reggie invited him to live with us for the time being, yes."
"Okay, we don't tell Jason about Hazel, and we let him see her. Maybe it'd give him closure."
"Julie!" Carlos, her younger brother, yelled as he walked into the studio. "Dad says to come in for dinner!"
"I'll be there a minute."
"Band meeting?"
"We're wrapping it up." Julie said, looking over at the guys. "We good?"
"Let's do this!" Reggie said happily.
