Help With A Song
"Julie, I thought I'd find you in here!" Hazel said happily, walking into the music room the next day. Hazel looked around the piano Julie was sitting at and saw Luke, Reggie, and Alex standing there. "Hey guys!"
"Hi Hazel!" Reggie said happily.
"What's up?" Julie asked.
"How would you guys like to come to my home on Friday?" Hazel asked. "Obviously, Flynn, Willie, and Jason are invited too, but-"
"Where do you live, exactly?" Alex asked. "I mean, if your mom is dead, your brother is... I don't know where, and your dad is..."
"It's a protected place for people like me. Monsters can't get in. It's called Camp Jupiter. It's in Oakland."
"How do you get here every day?" Julie asked.
"The Labyrinth."
"The fact that this conversation is so casual is weird..." Luke said, shaking his head.
"You get used to it after a while." Hazel said, shrugging. "Sorry if I made you guys uncomfortable yesterday. Seeing Jason was... Unexpected."
"We should be apologizing." Julie said quickly. "Should've warned you. We assumed that you couldn't see ghosts, so-"
"Normal thing to assume. How'd you find out that Jason and I knew each other anyway?"
"You both mentioned a friend named Percy who went to UC Berkeley. Percy isn't that common of a name."
"Good point." Hazel said, smiling a bit. "You guys have made me the happiest I've been since I found out that Jason had died."
"You care about him a lot?" Reggie asked.
"He was the first friend I made when I came back to life. We fought two wars together."
"You know how to use a sword?" Luke asked, a bit excited.
"Yeah. Ironically enough, my boyfriend and I are technically disgraces to the Roman army, yet we're the people in charge."
"What do you mean?" Julie asked.
"Romans are very much battle in the forefront. Nothing but armor, your blade, and your comrades protecting you. Frank's primary weapon is his bow and arrows. He was convinced that his dad was Apollo before Mars claimed him. As for me, I use a spatha, or a calvary sword. They're weapons that the Roman Army frowned upon."
"Do you have a horse to go with that calvary sword?"
"Sorta. I don't technically own him, but he's related to my boyfriend and Percy."
"I'm sorry, did you just say that a horse is related to your boyfriend and one of your friends?" Alex asked.
Hazel shrugged. "You get used to the weirdness. Arion is a child of Poseidon, Percy is his brother, and both Arion and Percy are technically Frank's uncles."
"How does that work?" Reggie asked.
"Well, Frank is a direct descendant of Periclymenus, this Argonaut that could shapeshift. Periclymenus was a som of Poseidon. Frank's the only Zhang left. His life was tied to a piece of firewood, which burned up, and he's not dead, which is very confusing, but maybe my dad gave him a break." Hazel said, shrugging. "We honestly try not to think too hard about the bloodlines. Otherwise, I'd be dating my nephew, Percy would be dating his niece, my brother would be dating his nephew, and Leo would be dating his great aunt or something like that. It's already weird that I dated Leo's great grandfather back in the 30's, I don't want to complicate things even more."
"How would Leo be dating his great aunt?" Julie asked.
"He's dating Calypso."
"Calypso... As in, Odysessus's Calypso?"
"Yeah. Cutting things off at the godly parent just makes things easier. As long as you don't share a parent, mortal or god, either form of the god, you're good."
"Sounds confusing."
"It is." Hazel said, sitting down at the piano next to Julie. "What are you guys doing in here anyway?"
"We're performing at the end of first week assembly on Friday. They gave is a big segment because they're having the different departments participate in it, and we're stuck on how to do the song."
"What's the name of the song?"
"I Got The Music." Luke said, pointing to the piece of paper from behind them. "We have everything else written, but the chorus and the bridge before Flynn raps is a struggle."
"What's rap?"
"It has background music, but instead of singing the words, you rhythmically speak them." Alex explained.
"Okay..." Hazel said, staring at the page. Coming up with something on the fly, she said, "How about for the chorus 'I got the music back inside of me, every melody and chord. Can't stop the music that gets inside my soul, and it's stronger than before'?"
"Can you sing what you're thinking?" Reggie asked. "Just so we can hear it."
"I got the music, back inside of me, every melody and chord. Can't stop the music, that gets inside my soul, and it's stronger than before." Hazel sang, doing her best to feel out the rhythm.
"And for the other part, I got the music, it won't let me go." Julie said, patting it out.
"What do we rhyme that with?" Reggie asked.
Luke snapped his fingers. "I got the music..."
"Just like a radio?" Hazel suggested. "Except radio is ra, di, o."
"You know what a radio is?" Alex asked.
"I may be from the 30's, but I do know some modern stuff..." Hazel said sheepishly.
"No, this is really good." Julie said, finishing out that section of chorus. "Guys, how does this sound?"
Julie pounded the section out, singing along as the guys nodded in approval.
"Nice." Reggie said. "What about the part before the rap?"
"Can you hear it? Can you hear the music? I got the music deep inside of me." Hazel suggested. "But the second time, the 'Can you hear the music' is a little different."
"Why are you not a part of the music program?" Luke asked jokingly.
"I'm good at art?" Hazel supplied for an answer.
"You should perform with us!" Julie suggested.
"I'm not that good at singing..." Hazel said quickly.
"You were pretty good in here." Alex said, smiling at Hazel warmly.
"Yeah, no." Hazel said as kindly as she could.
"You really said no, but with the heart emoji, huh?" Julie asked.
"What's an emoji?"
"Not important."
"I just don't want to screw it up. I can lead armies and kill giants without issue, but I've never actually... Performed."
"Kill... Giants?" Reggie asked.
"Yeah. That was the last big war I was a part of. Jason killed a couple too."
"I cannot see that boy killing anything... Or you, for that matter." Alex said nervously.
"I don't know, Alex." Luke said quickly. "Hazel looks like she can take care of herself."
"Well, you're gonna be shell shocked by my friend group." Hazel said, crossing her arms.
"Sing with us! It'll be fun!" Julie said, lightly nudging Hazel. "I can work with you on it!"
"I don't know..."
"Julie, who is this?" A teacher asked, walking into the room.
"My friend, Hazel. She started the art program this year."
"Well, the school is requiring that at least one of the art students participates in the assembly on Friday."
"Come on Hazel." Julie begged, the three guys circling around her as they all collectively gave Hazel puppy dog eyes. "Please..."
Hazel rolled her eyes. "Fine."
"Yes!" Luke cheered. "We'll go over it after school!"
"You are coming over today, right?"
"For a couple hours. I was almost late to family game night last night." Hazel said, smiling at the guys. "I can carve out a few hours though."
"Cool! See ya at lunch?"
"See ya!" Hazel said, getting off of the bench as the first bell rang.
