Hazel's First Day

"You got everything?" Frank Zhang asked, guiding his girlfriend to the small Labyrinth entrance.

"Frank, I have everything." Hazel said, sighing heavily. "You don't have to walk me to the door. I got this."

"Do you have your sketchbook?" Frank asked, smiling happily.

"Yeah..."

"No you don't."

"You saw me put it in my backpack!" Hazel said, laughing a little bit.

"You don't have your new one..."

"New one? I don't have a new one!"

"Yeah ya do." Frank said, revealing a plastic bag from behind his back and holding it out to Hazel. "It's from me, Nico, and Will. It's a good luck gift."

"Frank..." Hazel said exhaustedly.

"We're proud of you, Hazel!" Frank said, putting the bag in Hazel's hands. "And this year hasn't exactly been the easiest for anyone, so when a good thing happens, we wanna celebrate!"

"Thank you." Hazel said, getting up on her tippy toes as kissed Frank's cheek. "Are you gonna be okay running things by yourself all day?"

"I'll be fine, I promise." Frank said, smiling as happily as he could. "Go figure out the twenty first century. Camp isn't going to burn down in eight hours."

Hazel laughed, taking in a deep breath. "Fine. I love you, Frank."

"I love you too. Go have fun!"

"Call me as soon as there's an emergency."

"Go have fun!" Frank repeated, almost pushing Hazel in to the Labyrinth.

She quickly managed to manipulate the passageways to get her to her destination, hundreds of miles away from Camp Jupiter. Once Hazel resurfaced, she brushed off her black pleated skirt as she walked down the street, entering the school. People were playing different instruments and talking in small groups. Hazel smiled to herself, taking a deep breath, before walking deeper into the building.

As she was walking, she tripped over something and fell onto the ground. The new art supplies scattered onto the ground, the plastic bag breaking. Hazel quickly scrambled to pick all of it up.

"Watch where you're going!" A girl said, her caramel hair tied back in a ponytail. "You tripped over my shoe."

"S-Sorry!" Hazel stammered.

"Oh my God..." A girl with tan skin and extremely curly hair said, quickly walking over and getting on the ground. The girl looked familiar, but Hazel couldn't place it. The girl looked up at the ponytail girl. "Carrie, seriously?"

"She should watch where she's going." The ponytail girl said before walking away.

"Ignore her." The girl across from Hazel said, smiling at Hazel wide enough for Hazel to see a gap between her two front teeth. "Carrie isn't exactly the nicest person."

"It's fine. I really should pay attention." Hazel said quickly. "It's been a long time since I've been in an actual school."

"Were you homeschooled or something?"

"In a way. I used to go to this school in New Orleans, but then my mom moved us up to Alaska, and then I moved down here to live with my dad, and I haven't really been to school since I was six." Hazel partially lied. Easier than trying to explain that she hasn't been in a school in over seventy years.

"I get it. Crazy adjusting period." The girl said, finally noticing what she was picking up. "You a part of the art program?"

"Yeah. Today's my first day. This was a good luck present from my boyfriend, my brother, and my brother's boyfriend. My boyfriend was the one who submitted my application to this place."

"They sound nice." The girl said happily. "What year are you?"

"Um... Year Two? I'm forgetting the name for it right now..."

"I'm a sophomore too!"

"That's the name!"

The girl held out her hand. "I'm Julie. Julie Molina. I'm part of the music program."

Hazel's eyes widened. "Julie, as in the lead singer for Julie and the Phantoms?"

"Yeah. You a fan?"

That's where Hazel's seen her before. Having finally figured it out, Hazel smiled happily. "Sorta. My friend Percy, his roommate at UC Berkeley is a fan. He forced Percy to listen to some of your songs, and since Percy was helping me figure out some stuff for today, Percy forced me to listen to some of your music."

"No way!" Julie said happily. "That's so cool!"

"I guess. Your voice is incredible!"

"Thank you... Uh..."

"Did I forget to introduce myself?"

"Yeah..."

"I'm Hazel. Hazel Levesque."

"Nice to meet you Hazel." Julie said, standing up and holding out a hand for Hazel. "Need some help finding where everything is?"

"Yeah... This place is huge!" Hazel said, grabbing Julie's hand as Julie hoisted her up.

"Office is this way." Julie said, leading Hazel down the hall. "I'm supposed to meet my friend Flynn, but she can wait. I want to make sure you get settled."

"Thank you." Hazel said happily. "You don't have to do this though."

"It's fine." Julie said quickly. "While you're getting your schedule, I'll just text Flynn about the sitch. She'll understand. She's chill like that."

"I have to ask... About your band..."

"What's up?"

"The guys... They're... Whatchamacallit... Holograms, right?"

"Yeah. They're broadcasting all the way from Sweden, believe it or not."

"Then why'd you call the band Julie and the Phantoms? Why didn't you call it Julie and the Holograms?"

"Sounds reminiscent of Jem and the Holograms. Copyright infringement. Plus, Flynn is our manager, and she came up with the name."

"I know we just met, but could I meet them? Percy would flip."

"I doubt. Sleep schedules are wonky." Julie lied. She couldn't exactly tell Hazel that they weren't actually holograms without sounding crazy. "I'll tell you when there's a performance though."

"Thanks." Hazel said nervously. "Sorry if that was crossing a boundary or something."

"You're not crossing anything." Julie said quickly, pointing to a door in front of them. "There's the office. Talk to the secretary about your schedule. Once you get it, I can show you around to some of your classes and your locker."

"Okay..." Hazel said nervously. She started walking towards the office, steeling her nerves.

"Julie, hey!" Luke said, poofing in front of her.

"Luke!" Julie said, a bit annoyed, as she finished the text to Flynn. She then put the phone next to her ear, looking up at Luke expectantly. "Go for Julie!"

"Okay, so, for practice tonight, Alex wants to go over Bright and Stand Tall again so he can work out some of the drum stuff."

"Couldn't this have waited until I got home?"

"Well, yeah, but it's fun to surprise you at school!"

"That actually reminds me..." Julie said, not noticing that Hazel was walking out of the office. "Your mom's birthday is coming up, right?"

"Yeah... What about it?"

"I was thinking that we record an arrangement of Unsaid Emily, and then I go by her house and play it for her. Think she'd like that?"

Luke smiled happily. "I think she would."

Hazel stood by the door, not wanting to interrupt Julie's conversation with the guy in front of her. Hazel looked over at the kid next to her, tapping him on the shoulder. "Hey, who's that kid that Julie's talking to?"

The kid gave Hazel a confused look. "How am I supposed to know? She's on the phone."

Before Hazel could ask the kid any more questions, he walked away. Hazel turned her attention to Julie and the guy, watching the guy poof away. Hazel blinked a couple of times, making sure that she wasn't seeing things as Julie hung up her phone. Shaking off the shocked expression on her face, Hazel walked back over. As soon as she got close enough, the air around Julie felt off, like everything around her was telling Hazel that death was surrounding Julie. "I got my schedule."

"Cool!" Julie said happily. "Let's go find your classes!"
