Chapter 1~~ Fitting right in
Hawthorn gently grabbed a pretty pink-white flower off of her tree and pulled. It came off with enough vine to wrap around her ear. She did this every morning: Get up, eat breakfast, grab a flower, and let her mother put it around her ear. She unwound her dark green tail from the large tree, still holding the blossom. Hawthorn slowly climbed down the trunk of the beautiful tree with red berries and pink-white flowers. A hawthorn tree. It was about thirty feet high and twenty feet wide. The dragonet flew up an oak tree at the side of the small clearing. In that tree, there were small huts laid in its branches. She flew up the the biggest hut where all the branched split. Hawthorn landed on the wood floor, covered with leaves to make it more appealing to the feet. The green light from the leafy roof illuminated the green dragon in front of her.
The scales along this dragon's back were light brown. She was a light, fern green with emerald scales. The webbing in between her wings and her grass green spines were a minty blue-green. Her underbelly was pear. The scales around her eyes were orange, highlighting her golden eyes.
"Mom, I have it," The dragonet said.
"Bring it here so I can put it around your ear," Fern said, turning around. Fern took the flower and wrapped it around Hawthorn's left ear.
"You ready?"
"Yeah,"
"Then let's fly,"
They jumped out the open hole in the hut that served as a door. Together, they flew through the treetops, heading North. Soon, they came into a clearing with a gigantic towering structure of vines and leaves and silk strung to all the trees around it and a hill on the farthest side. They landed on a branch by the main entrance, only to jump down to the platform. A pale green dragon stood up from her desk and approached them.
"Have you come for your placement?" Mint asked, adjusting her glasses.
"Yes," Her mother replied. Mint turned to her desk and picked up a scroll.
"Hawthorn. Reading, agriculture, and healing. Any extracurriculars?"
"Not right now,"
"Take this to your teacher. Room 3a."
"Alright," Hawthorn replied. Fern and Hawthorn turned and walked through a tunnel to several open 'caves' they walked down this tunnel and ended up on stone. The second cave had '3A' on the top. They walked in to see several HiveWings, SilkWings, and LeafWings sitting in a semicircle. In the front was a big sapphire blue SilkWing with a ruby-red underbelly and a bit of dark purple on her limbs. She stood up to greet them.
"Well, hello there! You must be the new student! My name is Sappho, and I will be teaching you this year!" Sappho shook Fern's talon, then Hawthorn's. She could practically feel the overwhelming joy coming off her. Sappho turned to the other students as Fern said her goodbyes. As she turned around she saw all the students staring at her. Three moons, the force of ten pairs of eyes was horrible. Sappho was standing next to her.
"Introduce yourself. Say your name, favorite food, or anything else we need to know."
"My name is Hawthorn, I like to eat hawthorn berries, ironically, and, um, I like to read."
"Perfect!" Sappho exclaimed, making her flinch. "Who wants to show Hawthorn around and be her partner?" Five dragons raised their hand. "Evania! Would you like to do it?"
"Sure!" A small red-orange HiveWing said, fluttering her wings back.
"Just sit by her and she will explain everything," Hawthorn obeyed. The other dragon she was sitting next to was a very green SilkWing. He stuck out a talon and whispered, "Emerald," Hawthorn took his talon and shook it. "Nice to meet you, Emerald," Hawthorn looked back at Evania and she caught her eyes. "Right now we are studying SilkWing Metamorphosis," There was a diagram that showed the anatomy of one. Evania explained everything and translated what she didn't know. She fit right in.
