Chapter 2

"So, what now?" Chance asks as they walk out of the realtor office.

"We're heading over to see Rob Lundquist. He's expecting us." Adam says as he gets into his car.

"Were you being serious about seeing that Foust guy?" Chance asks as fastens his seatbelt.

"Serious as a heart attack." Adam answers. "I saw him when I was looking in the mirror. He was standing behind me."

"So that's why you jumped and looked around." Chance says with a nod.

"Yeah, it surprised me. He actually smiled at me. Pretty smile too." Adam smiles as he glances over at his friend.

"Geez, Adam." Chance chuckles as he rolls his eyes.

"I'm excited to talk to Mr. Lundquist." Adam says.

"It's definitely going to be interesting." Chance nods.

~~

"Mr. Lundquist, I'm Adam Rupp. We spoke on the phone." Adam says as he shakes the historian's hand.

He was exactly what Adam would imagine a historian to look like. Glasses, full beard, a friendly smile.

"Of course, but please, call me Rob." Rob smiles as he shakes Adam's hand. He then shakes Chance's hand after Adam introduces him to his friend. "Please, come in. Well, I think I have everything you're needing to know about the Foust mansion."

"The realtor told me that you were the man I needed to talk to." Adam says as he and Chance follow Rob down the hall to a huge library.

"Have a seat." Rob says as he sits down at a table. There was a folder lying in front of him. I started my research on the mansion after I moved in."

"Why did you move?" Chance asks.

"I'll get to that." Rob chuckles as he opens the folder. "As you probably know, the mansion was built in 1885 by Timothy Regan Foust. Tim's father was a very rich man. A well-known cattle rancher around this area. Tim was an only child. His father gave him the land on which the house is sitting." Rob reaches into the folder and pulls out a picture. "This is a picture of Timothy Foust that I believe was taken about the time his house was being built."

He lays the picture on the table for the two men to see.

"Wow, he's cute." Adam smiles.

"You might say that he was quite popular with the ladies." Rob chuckles. "But as you will soon learn, Tim had, as they say, skeletons in his closet. In 1896, Tim dies at the age of 37. Here's his death certificate." Rob lays the document on the table.

"Wait. It says 'Cause of death: Suicide by hanging'?" Adam reads then looks up at Rob.

"So the document reads. But it was found out some years later that it was not suicide but murder. The skeletons I mentioned in Tim's closet? He was Bi-sexual. He had a male lover, Nathan Rhodes. The townspeople discovered that Mr. Rhodes was gay. A lynch mob went after him. He confessed that he and Tim were lovers right before they hung him. They then went after Tim. They dragged Mr. Foust from his home and hung him in the tree that is still standing beside the house. No charges were ever filed for the murders of Tim Foust and Nathan Rhodes."

"Oh, my God." Adam says as he shakes his head in disbelief.

"After the death of his son, his father sold the property, sold his cattle business and leaves town in shame. He dies later at the age of 87. After that, the house changes hands many times. Until in 2011, a young man by the name of Austin Brown bought the property. He started renovating, making it more modern. He was a partier. Then one night during a huge party in 2014, Austin had been drinking heavily, he started down the stairs, lost his balance and fell to his death. This is a picture of Austin." Rob says as he lays down a picture.

"Wow." Adam says, once again shaking his head.

"Now comes my story." Rob chuckles as he closes the folder. "Being a sucker for old Victorian homes, I came across the Foust mansion and immediately fell in love with it. My wife, Kelsey and I bought the house in 2015. It was completely furnished so we moved in immediately. The weird stuff started happening the very first night."

"Weird stuff?" Chance asks.

"Adam, I know who you are or should I say, what you are. I know you had to pick up on something when you walked into that house." Rob says as he crosses his arms on the table.

"I did." Adam answers quietly as he nods his head.

"I really never thought about the paranormal much. That is until I moved in that house. Here's what I think." Rob says as he removes his glasses to clean them. "You have two spirits in the house. I truly believe they are Tim Foust and Austin Brown."

"I know that Tim is there because I saw him." Adam says.

"I did too." Rob nods. "He tends to be more visible than Austin. Maybe because he's been dead the longest and has more power. Who knows. You'll hear footsteps, banging on the walls, someone will knock on the door but no one will be there. Things will be moved. I laid my cell phone down on the coffee table, came back five minutes later and it was gone. I looked for that thing for three hours. Finally found it under the cushion of the couch. All of that I believe is Austin. He's a prankster and the noisemaker."

"What about Mr. Foust?" Chance asks.

"Well, like I said, Tim is more visible. You see shadows out of the corner of your eyes. He's a watcher. He watches you all the time. He doesn't like things to be moved. I think he still sees it as his house and things are meant to be left alone. Forget about rearranging anything because it will be moved back after you leave the room. He also likes his peace and quiet. Your electronics such as the television, radio, stereo, etc. will all mysteriously stop working. He tears them up." Rob chuckles. "Back in the 1800s, they didn't have stuff like that and he doesn't like it. You'll also hear voices. They argue quite a bit."

"Can you hear what they're saying?" Chance asks.

"No, it's almost like whispers. It's definitely just two people arguing. One has a very deep voice and the other's a much higher voice." Rob answers.

"Do you feel that they might be aggressive spirits? I didn't feel in danger while we were there." Adam says.

"No, I don't think they really mean any harm. I never felt threatened in any way." Rob says.

"Then why did you leave?" Chance asks.

"Several reasons. We weren't getting any sleep because of the noises. Tim was costing me a fortune in buying new electronics every week. And Kelsey didn't appreciate him watching her shower." Rob laughs.
