Chapter 13

When Tim began to show signs of weakness and dizziness, Adam thought it best to head home. Besides a few scary moments, he believed that the spirit actually had a good time.

"Well? How'd it go?" Austin asks as they walk into the house.

"It was quite interesting." Tim answers as he takes hold on the staircase railing for support.

"You overdid it, didn't you." Austin says as a look of concern comes across his face.

"Naw, I'm alright. Just a little weak." Tim says.

"Sweetie, why don't you go rest or whatever you need to do to get your strength back." Adam says as he rubs the spirit on the back. "I don't like seeing you like this. It scares me."

"I'll be back soon." Tim whispers as he leans in and gives the blonde a soft kiss. "I'm going to my resting place."

"I'll be waiting." Adam whispers into the kiss.

The cowboy closes his eyes and slowly begins to fade away. Adam felt the disconnection from his lover. A feeling of emptiness and loneliness swept over him.

"Hey, he'll be back in a day or two." Austin smiles as he playfully punches Adam on the arm.

"I know. But I miss him already." Adam says, smiling sadly at the younger spirit.

"Tell me, how did the old-timer handle the city?" Austin asks with a smile.

"Well, besides almost getting ran over by a semi, I think he did pretty well for his first time." Adam chuckles.

"WHAT!!??" Austin laughs. "How the hell did he almost get hit by a semi?"

"By walking out into the street trying to figure out what a traffic light was." Adam grins as he heads upstairs to put away the books that he had bought for Tim.

"I would have loved to have seen his face." Austin says in a fit of laughter as he follows the blonde up the stairs.

"I didn't see it actually happen. I had gone to the restroom. When I came out, I heard the semi's horn and Tim scream. I only saw the aftermath which was still humorous. His eyes were as big as silver dollars as he stared at the grill of the truck. His hands were over his ears." Adam says as he places the books on the bookshelf.

"OH, MY GOD!!" Austin laughs loudly. "THAT'S HILARIOUS!!"

"Needless to say, Tim didn't think it was too funny." Adam shrugs with a smile.

"What else happened?" The younger spirit asks after getting control of his laughter.

"Let me think. Oh! He got slapped by a prostitute." The blonde chuckles.

"He came on to a prostitute with you with him?" Austin asks with a shocked look on his face. The old cowboy was cooler than he thought.

"No, I wasn't with him at the time. I had gone to put these books in the car and he was to wait at a cafe. Well, they needed the table so they made him move. So he moved to a bench by the cafe and a prostitute showed up and sat down next to him. Apparently, Tim said something that offended her and she slapped him." Adam says.

"How the hell do you offend a prostitute?" Austin laughs. "Wait. I forgot. This IS Tim we're talking about. He's pretty straightforward with his comments."

Adam went on to tell Austin of their trip to the museum. About how fascinated Tim was by everything he saw and that he believed it helped the older spirit understand the progress of today's modern world. Some he liked, some he didn't.

It was getting late and it had been a long day. Tim wasn't the only one exhausted, the blonde was too. He informed the young spirit that he was heading to bed and for him to keep the noise down.

He walks into his lonely bedroom and sits down on the bed. There was no feeling of being watched. Just an empty shell of a room.

Adam sighs as he looks at the chair that the cowboy would sit in as he watched over the blonde as he slept. Empty.

"Where did you go? I miss you." Adam asks softly. "It's not like you can leave. A portal maybe? You're own special resting place here in the house?"

Maybe that was it. The house is old and could have hidden tunnels. Slave quarters or an underground hideout for runaway slaves? Who knows.

"I've never really explored the house." Adam says to himself as he slips on some sleep pants and gets ready for bed. "I wonder if Austin knows anything."

Adam lays down in the bed and stares up at the ceiling. "Where could he be?"

Adam springs up in bed as a thought occurs to him.

"He's going to his resting place." Adam says. "Is his body buried somewhere on this property? Could he be talking about the tree where he took his last breath?"

He jumps out of bed and grabs a tee shirt. Slipping on the shirt, he runs from his room.

"HEY, AUSTIN!?" Adam calls as he runs out into the hallway.

"What's up?" The young spirit asks as he comes out of his room. "I wasn't making any noise."

"No, I know you weren't. Has Tim ever said anything to you about where his body is buried?" Adam asks as he follows the young ghost back into his room.

"Yeah, why?" Austin asks, sitting down on his bed.

"Tim said that he was going to his resting place. A grave is a person's final resting place." Adam explains.

"He said he was buried underneath the tree." Austin says.

"The tree that he was hung in?" Adam asks.

"Mhmm." Austin nods.

"But why on earth would his father bury him there?" Adam asks. He couldn't believe that a father would do such a cruel thing. "Without even a tombstone."

"Timmy said when the news of his death and the reason for it got to his father that he was so ashamed of his son that he wanted Tim's spirit to have a constant reminder of his death." Austin says. "So he buried him underneath the very tree that he took his last breath. He didn't put a tombstone because he wanted to forget that his son even existed."

"Oh, my God." Adam says, covering his mouth and slowly sitting down next to Austin.

"Yep, his dad was an award-winning asshole." Austin adds with a nod. "Even after the war, he refused to free his slaves. When Timmy built this house, he had a secret room built. He started hiding out his dad's slaves until he could get them to safety. I don't think his dad ever found out about what his son was doing. Unfortunately, Timmy was murdered before he could get them all to freedom."

Adam was at a complete loss of words as he listened to what Austin was saying.

"Yep, Timmy acted like the perfect son around his dad while stealing his slaves behind his back the whole time." Austin chuckles. "He even took part in looking for the so-called 'runaway' slaves."

Austin motions for Adam as he gets up and walks out on the balcony.

"So, if you're wondering where Timmy goes when he's 'resting'. He's right there." Austin says as he points to the ground underneath the old tree.
